There is some discussion that sex exists; people have it, but there's not long involved discussions of mechanics. Zombies not horribly detailed gruesome bloody which I find more offensive than sex. I calmly read it on my commute without coming into work shell-shocked by violence. Violence is part of survival in this world but isn't dwelled upon in a purient manner. Any of the series is safe to give to teen readers who have seen much more on TV, if they can handle some discussion of
1) killing zombies and vague references to dismemberment by/of zombies
2) characters dying -- including horses and mentions of dogs, etc (mammals over 40 pounds can become zombies too)
Most crushing thing for me in the whole series is a description of a character (Georgia) cleaning up after a zombie attack, she sees "a six year old dead, still clutching a barbie, with blood on her lips".
3) "The day the dead came to school" may be a bit too close to real life for some kids, especially if they have younger sibs. (less)
