SCARS ARE SEXY- Books with imperfect/disfigured/disabled heroes
...and we love them all the more for it. Who doesn't have a soft spot when it comes to the scarred and tortured heroes!? -Note this could also include psychological scars.

Buggy, I added a few books. Is it only PNR/UF books we're voting on? If so, you can throw out Special Forces :)

Oh but it's worth every word. Eventhough, around halfway, you'll hate me for making you read it. Not because it gets boring but because of the agony!
Another agony (or shall I say: ahgony) is the fact that I'm still waiting for LUnl! Shocking!

Now You've made me want to read it even more! I love authors that "torture" their heros (don't know what that says about me?)
And what is up with the lateness of your book? I mean really, You were 1st to get yours last year. I noticed today that orders were starting to show up in others peoples mail boxes, sorry Mel!

I know, booohooo :'(
Oh the authors of SF both torture their heroes and their readers. You have to let me know when you start it! :)

I love this list. For some reason, maybe I'm a freak, but I love a good physically or mentally damaged hero who overcomes the odds! It makes the romance so much more of a challenge. I love a good challenge. I added "The Madness of Lord ian Mackenzie" to the list. This one deals with autism/Asperger's syndrome before it was understood. Amazing book.
I wanted to add Love Means... No Boundaries. The two main characters in this story are damaged. One is bind since the age of 12 and the other has facial scars from a motorcycle accident. It is a lovely story. A true love story. :)
Also, Simple Jess. Gorgeous and lovely romance between a mountain widow and a mentally disabled young man. Lovely scenery and beautiful romance.
This is my genre! I love to read it and I love to write it. I added my books to the list, hope you all enjoy them! :)
I much prefer mental distress, things psychological and psychiatric.
Hey Alice, I would think those whould also be perfectly acceptable, related more to the tortured side
Great list! May I also recommend Zane's Redemption (Scanguard vampires series by Tina Folsom) and also oldie but goodie - Angelique series by Anna and Sergue Golon. It is a historic romance set in France at the time of Luis XIV and the main character, Count Joffre de Peirac, is not only heavily scarred but also lame(but only in physical sence).
Thanks Katrina, glad you like the list. My fav type of hero. Feel free to add any books yourself.
At the top, under the heading, there are two folders "all votes" and "add books to list" Yours are great adds as I've never heard of either :)

Hm . . . I'll have to look for those. Thanks for the update Katrina :).

Happy to contribute, specially the Angelique. The series was extremely popular in 1960-70, maybe more in Europe then in America, to the extent that 5 of the books were made in to movies - I know that it will show my true age, but there are several generations of women who were totally in love with Le Count, your's truely included:)

I used to love the Angelique series on television as a teenager and simply devoured the Angelique books which I borrowed from the library later on.
I couldn't agree more when you said "I know that it will show my true age, but there are several generations of women who were totally in love with Le Count". So true... :-)

I've read the Vampire Acadamy series...I'm not sure who the "scarred" character is supposed to be. It has been awhile since i read them though so maybe my memory is failing me.
This list is evil. I am the tortured one. Which book to pick first? There's too many "best books" with imperfect etc heroes! :) Love them all.
I just posted "The Land of the Beautiful Dead", an incredible book (and very long, about 700+ pages) by R. Lee Smith. But I felt I had to put in a warning about this book as well.
It's DARK! And it's very violent, and gory! It's post-apocalyptic, with kind of a zombie theme going on. Lots of disturbing bits! Lots of vulgarity!
The Hero in this story is also (surprisingly) the villain! (I picture the Lich King) But if you're looking for scarred, disfigured, and tormented then he'd be the poster boy for this thread! Not an attractive one though.
But it was beautiful! The ending was beautiful! And all the ugly horrifying parts of it just made it more so.

I feel like some of these books don't fall in this category. Unless we're going with "nobody is perfect".
