We can’t afford to simply go along with the flow of life, because nothing in this world has been created, built, or set up in our favor. If we want something, we have to push back against everything around us and take it by force.” In a world where gender means your future, where it decides your fate, your position and your right to live and die, to be sacrificed or torn to pieces by cruelty of patriarchy, insert alien invasion that lasts for a long long time. Battles have been fought, battles have been lost and yet the war is nowhere near over. Hunduns, the alien race, versus humanity that is bound strictly by their rules with out goal in mind: how to motive their male population to fight by sacrificing women and girls who have no other choice but to fuel their Chrysalis units and die if they are unlucky. Yes, perfect matches exist. Yes, one could survive if their spirit is strong enough. But where is the breaking point? Is the breaking point once the pilots run out of women? No. It's when an anomaly shows itself in form of a woman who managed to kill a man in revenge, defying all odds that the man should have had killed her via mind link. So, how do you get rid of that particular problem? Get the man killer, Wu Zetian - now The Iron Widow - to pilot with the Iron Demon, Li Shimin, who is a kin slayer, family slayer and an eyesore who cannot be killed, because he is strongest pilot of them all. Too bad. I am exactly the kind of ice-blooded, rotten-hearted girl he fears I am. And I am fine with that. Let's not forget the childhood friend/love interest whom Wu Zetian ditched over revenge (i must admit it was very sexy of her) and his beautiful rich mind and connections. There are plenty of witty dialogues, fun dialogues, amusing sentences and highly fun narrative, but sometimes some actions of the characters seemed to happen out of blue, for example… li shimin and yizhi's attraction to each other, while i can count on hand how many interactions they had together. Wu Zetian herself had some very drastic behavioral changes, which sometimes flowed well in storyline, and sometimes didn't. Example: being super resolved to do something, then ending up being a mess right after, and right next second stealing herself again and doing a Thing. Li Shimin was the most interesting character for me, but there is always the fact that i love troubled characters and yet i can say i wholeheartedly enjoyed this couple of murder husband and wife. There is a lot about him that you should find on your own, and i shall not ruin the fun. Gao Yizhi was okayish, wish there were more scenes with him, and more spotlights, at this point he was just there to be there and to set the love triangle to stone. Yes. This is fully functional love triangle polyamory. If this is not your thing, do not read. I really hope he shines more in the second book! Lastly, there are many triggering things in this book, and those unfamiliar with some Chinese customs might find it hard to comprehend or even imagine what pain women had to go through to get their fit bound, or the way their social relationships worked. And of course, if you have any knowledge of Chinese historical figures you will see plenty of people you already know. Zhuge Liang, Qin Zheng for example... Xiran Jay Zhao is extremely fun person to hear and listen to and i have been following them on Twitter for a long time and i still have to say; they delivered. Can't wait for the rest of the books. I am guessing author will become better with each book. I have read plenty of first person view books and i have a feeling that this might have been better as a third POV instead... I could also say that Wu Zetian is unreliable narrator and yet i have read books with much more influencing first person writing than this one, so i feel like there is a lot of room for improvement! ...more |

Well feast your eyes and read this, because this book is a beautiful masterpiece that blends every single tvtrope being subverted or not, wisely uses everything - the characters, the setting, the modern media, the fantasy, horror, thriller... It's a huge bundle of emotions - that all comes down to one goal: survival. But, what point is there to survival if none of you are there to witness the end? (Best of all, it's fully translated!) At this point, I have so many feelings about this book. This is a perfect time loop, a perfect dystopia, a perfect apocalypse, and a perfect scenario. There are no plot holes because everything is so carefully written and even the smallest details can be connected to form a bigger picture. For example, chapter connections between 180+530 and so on and on. When I started reading this book, all I thought about was this: Will everything be explained? The answer is yes. It was done so damn well that there is no doubt that this can be considered a masterpiece. You have to have 2 huge galaxy brains like ShingShong to write something like this and not fail at connecting everything. Not just the story, but the characters in this one are stunning. Even though there are three main characters in the book, there are around 15 so called side characters - but they are all so well done that you could just straight up call them a group of deuteragonists instead. Everyone is highly developed, they have their own histories and best of all - they are all different and have huge difference in their personalities.
The female characters in this book are absolutely amazing. They are not shallow. They don't suffer from The Bechdel Test - they pass it gloriously. Such a wide variety of characters is stunning... There are really few authors that can pull of such a feat and I have read 1000 books already, so this is saying something about the the level of writing. STORY AND CHARACTERS: Omniscient reader's viewpoint is about Kim Dokja who once read a book. And that book has always been there for him - and it saved his life. He was the only follower of that book that has over 3100 chapters for 10 years. It's always been there for him, even through his ups and downs in life. And one day, it was completed - the last chapter of the story was finally published. But then, at the same time, same day, the world ended and the book he read about blended with the reality he was living in. What makes this whole book this damn interesting is exactly Kim Dokja. He knows everything of the world, he knows almost all about the creatures, but his strongest point is his knowledge of characters that are suddenly real people. And he knows how to manipulate them, how to make them help him and how to survive in this world and how to turn this new world and their rulers upside down. After all, the main runners of the show are Constellations: beings of amazing powers that chose their pawns to play with by giving them Stigma in order to survive the scenarios. They award them with coins in order to improve themselves and their abilities. And yet, no matter how much Kim Dokja abuses his knowledge of this world, he can't change one thing: the protagonist of this world is very hard to get on his side - and very hard to work together. Yoo Jonghyuk is stuck in a time loop (regression) that starts from the beginning of the scenarios every time he dies, and at the moment where he meets Kim Dokja, he is living through his third regression. And yet, Kim Dokja knows that YJH has survived dozen of regressions and every time he does, it changes him. YJH is prideful, loner and murderous man who doesn't really trust anyone anymore, but there is still that tiny bit inside him that screams that he doesn't want to stay alone... But whenever he dies, the world ends with him and thus for him... having relationships with others is waste of time and a burden on his feelings. (But Kim Dokja changes that). The other unknown variable are the real humans that have been dragged with him like his coworker Yoo Sangah (excellent at languages, hardworking, outstanding), one of his bosses Han Myungoh (who at first starts as a huge scum, but later changes to better), Lee Gilyoung (a child KDJ adopted and saved because he saw things and he just knew. LGY is a kid who was thrown into a really difficult situation). Kim Dokja cannot read through them and thus he needs to earn their loyalty and affections through his own actions. Meanwhile, book characters like Jung Heewon (someone who was never saved before, someone whose potential is so high she can slaughter the heavens), Lee Hyunsung (a soldier and a man who needs encouragement but is actually really brave, but he needs to break free from following orders), Lee Jihye (who has many issues due to trauma of her own survival through the first scenario) are someone that Kim Dokja can affect. Finally, there is also Han Sooyoung... the apparent third main character and her introduction is later in the novel so talking about her would have to go under spoilers. She's everything. She's sassy, bossy, and really smart and dedicated person who would stop at nothing to achieve her goals. And the best of all, the relationship of all three of the main characters. Of how they all fit the soulmate trope and how they all complete each other's life. In short, if one of them was removed from the picture, the others wouldn't be alive. That's how much they depend on each other. That's how much their stories, their lives, mean to each other. I sadly can't type everything about them because of spoilers, but... it's amazing. (I love one ugly rat with wings, one angel, one monkey king, one immature dragon, one regresso depresso sunfish bastard, one secretive bastard with a veil, one amazing author, one perfect collegue and adorable woman, one boss that becomes better, one righteous swordswoman, one soldier cutie bear, two kids I adopted (so did the rat), one Baaaht, one dokkaebi who is underestimated, one schoolgirl with wild imagination, one doctor that needs a break, one golden haired cutie, the smallest and the most powerful being in the universe, the huge half titan master, dogs, one forgotten sister, death god in love with his wife, his wife that kicks ass, one drunk god, one god with a train, and finally a 4th wall!)
OVERALL: Characters: 6/5 - Excellent, will make you scream and cry. One rat man especially and one sunfish. Side characters: 6/5 - Excellent and strong point of this book. They are a support and huge help and emotional crutch in this messed up world. Story: 6/5 - complex, unique, excellent world building. Humor and angst: 5/5 - do you want to cry a lot and feel sad and actually be happy. there you go. Warnings: (view spoiler)[rape mention, suicide, depression, dying a lot, domestic abuse (mentioned) and so on and on.... (hide spoiler)] ...more |

Feitian YeXiang is an expert in making you fall in love with characters, side characters, history, places, customs and everything else. His extensive knowledge of how some things works and how he implements them in his novels is outstanding. This one is not an exception. This one is filled with world and character development, wonderful and extensive research and Suika and Rynn delivered absolutely amazing translation filled with wonderful footnotes and explanations the non-chinese people wouldn't understand in case they haven't watched many court dramas or daily lives of ancient china. This is a story of a young master You Miao (Meowmeow for short) who has everything he asked for - a place in court, friendships, connections and everything he needed. His family, on the other hand, is in another town. So to speak it means that in the capital he's alone. One day, he visits his good friend Li Yan who gave an order for one particular slave to be beaten to death. The unfortunate slave here is our main lead Li Zhifeng, a captured Quanrong slave who was forced to be also bed slave. So, You Miao saves his life by buying him from Li Yan and nurturing him back to health. This is a story of how You Miao saved a person who was on brink of breaking. It's wonderful to see that gradual return of Li Zhifeng's personality traits and to discover what kind of person he is. I, at first, misjudged him and thought this prolonged 7 year torture he experienced as a slave would make him numb, cold and unfeeling, but it's completely opposite! You Miao grows and develops and goes through fiery trials and tribulations connected to his family, his loyalties, his friendships and it leads him on a path of self discovery in a remote piece of land bought by his mother. And finally, there is also third prince - Zhao Chao, of their empire, who is just a son who wants to prove that he's not useless and that he's worth something and that he should not be abandoned like he already was. Too bad, he also goes through many trials himself and develops over time. There is a span of years involved, places change, people change, people die and people disappear and some run away - and sometimes war is just something you can't escape. The description of battles was wonderfully done, the strategies were great (as someone who is history battle obsessed I admire the thoughtfulness put into it) and it's still not too much. Prepare for laughter. For crying and for fulfillment while reading this novel. It's wonderful journey of feelings and dedication and devotion. Of loyalty, of humanity and of rediscovery of self. OVERALL: ✭ Characters: 5 - fantastic development of main characters. This story spans through set of years and don't let the age difference put you off. ✭ Side characters: 5- Fantastic, detailed, you care for them. ✭ Story: 5 - Very easy to follow and Suika and Rynn helped a lot with their footnotes! ...more |

He helped his brother to climb the throne, but all he got in return was endless torture and suffering (for 3 years), and left to die. Until he got washed up on a shore near a certain village... where no one is normal, even if things seem like it. Horribly scarred, both in mind and soul, Nan Ge Er finds himself on the road of recovery, where it becomes very hard for him to find the reason to live. As the story goes, NGE finds himself being accepted by the people there, especially Mo Shu, the leader of the misfits, while trying to understand that not all his hope is lost. There are some loose ends, even though the main mystery is solved (and what a shocking twist it was in that certain devastating chapter), that could have been solved in more chapters, but the main point wasn't in the story plot itself, because the plot story is a road to recovery of Nan Ge Er, who seeks place to belong, who unknowingly longs for people's companionship, and who in the end found a person who longs for him. Mo Shu is mystery itself. He's hardworking, always busy, considerate, but also playful, mischievous and has a very interesting survival sense and protective stance of his people. Some plot twists came out of nowhere, but when you reread, you find out that there were clues, and if you skim through them, you won't see it coming until it's too late. Overall, highly unique story with good combination of hurt/comfort and do i even have to mention: (view spoiler)[murder (hide spoiler)]husbands!!!! After all, Nan Ge Er has fought his way to the throne, so he's not completely all that innocent. ...more |

Review also posted on novel updates. Wushuang is a book that is very fast paced, with highly developed main characters and story that is equally interesting as them. Side characters are a high bonus, they have really well dynamic with their leaders and are well developed. The comedy is peak gold, there are many parts that will make you laugh, but will also make you cry. In a way, this is half serious, half funny book, but mostly accented on cases that Cui Buqu and Feng Xiao have to deal with, and in the meantime discover what they mean to each other, beside ruining the reputation between themselves. Their relationship is honestly so amazing, because while they both have their own quirks and morals, they don't strive to change each other so they would fit into the mold for their relationship to work. Besides that, reading of how Cui Buqu and Feng Xiao went from enemies, to associates, to close acquaintances, and finally to friends and more, is really interesting journey. Translation is amazing, wording is wonderful and really brings the quality of MXS's writing. This is a sequel to Qianqiu (Thousand Autumns) and certain character fates will be revealed, so if you don't want spoilers for Qianqiu, head there first, and some things will be clearer in Wushuang. To repeat, there is no need to read QQ at all, as Wushuang can stand on it's own perfectly, but the sect relationships and sect leaders are the people you might have already met in the Qianqiu. ...more |

This is a book about betrayals and of how much a person can withstand those betrayals and threats without backing down and staying strong, but also remaining human. Shen Qiao suffered a lot of unfortunate circumstances, and while he recovers, he also has very strong mentality, high morality and huge amount of belief that everyone possess a certain kind of kindness and that that kindness will be repaid. But Yan Wushi is different. He trusts no one, he believes in no one, he considers emotions and human relationships inferior things, while also striving for uniqueness and searching for interesting things and people who catch his attention. One of those people is Shen Qiao. In other words, Yan Wushi is type that will test SQ's limits, while also testing himself. In other words, Shen Qiao is not an easy person that relents or surrenders under pressure. Both of them, in the end, strive for their own morality and beliefs. And after many trials and tribulations, many tricky situations and many many chapters later, after realizing - after properly meeting each other... only then will they realize that the other has something the former lacks. I feel sad that only YWS sometimes went overboard, and in the end (view spoiler)[broke Shen Qiao's complete belief and trust in people, as he no longer expects his kindness to be returned, (hide spoiler)] but that doesn't stop him from being kind, considerate and very reliable person. Side characters are good, but not as good as Wushuang's. Expect Rong Bai is amazing and she is the only one worth mentioning since she's just... so interesting. Everytime she appears, I love her more. There are some triggering things to consider while reading this book, but mostly nothing major happens, but may cause discomfort, such as:(view spoiler)[r*pe threats and actual behind the scenes r*pe of side characters or unimportant characters. (hide spoiler)] In the end, what this book comes to is Shen Qiao trying to make Yan Wushi understand that there is selfless kindness in the world, while Yan Wushi tries to make Shen Qiao understand that not everyone in this world is kind, and that his kindness will amount to nothing when the party he's helping has other motives. Both are right, but also, both are wrong. In the end, it all comes up that world is not a black-white, but rather gray. Overall, this is highly fascinating book, please consider reading it! ...more |

Although it might be hard to catch up with Cultivation method novels, Seven Seas actually helped with giving notes about terminology for easier reading. This was one of my introductions into Chinese novels in general long time ago, and ever since then I've been in hell. There is also adaptation and it did amazing job (I'm talking about animated version, the drama version changed a lot, but still stuck with the main plot). In short, read it. It will make you cry, it will make you laugh, but most importantly, I am certain you will love it and it will not be waste of time. It's slow burn, good romance and the characterization of all side characters is flawless. I was immensely invested in side characters and their stories and wished there were more. In short, it's a very direct sequel to Wolfsong so be careful and don't skip books because you most certainly won't understand anything. So basically, read in order, okay? And i loved it more than I loved Wolfsong. I loved the way i heard Gordo's voice. I loved reading his perspective. I loved the fact that this author KNOWS how to write first person POV and do it right. How to tell stories of 12 characters through only one perspective and how to make them all feel real. How he writes their voices, their dialogues, how he implements the action and grief and hate and happiness through only one voice. That is how you write a book in first person. ►►► STORY & CHARACTERS: If we tried, I didn’t know if there’d be enough pieces of us left to put back together. It begins with Gordo. Gordo is an asshole, we all knew that. But we all love him too. He’s a man with many issues, who has been hurt and abandoned through years, and he stopped expecting anything less from people around him. His only safe people were his friends Tanner, Chris and Rico, and their newest employee Ox, who very soon became Gordo’s tether. A way to his sanity. But then the Bennets (the pack that left him behind; left him after he just lost his previous pack and family) came home and stole Ox from him…. It begins 1 year later after their return (brothers and Gordo’s) and it begins with their 3 years on the road. The road had been hard for everyone – for Joe who stopped speaking altogether; for Kelly and Carter who love each other but were close to tearing themselves to shreds; for Gordo, who was leaving Ox behind, leaving the way everyone did to him (and he’s leaving Mark, even though he would never accept it). They sang. It begins with them coming home and facing a new threat. A threat that is infecting all around them, while they slowly notice the violet eyes gathering around them. It begins with Robert Livingstone, who is still out there, searching for a way to bring something of his back to his side. It begins with the pack itself, the humans, the wolves, the witch. And how they all function together. It begins with Mark, who had to obey but his heart never left. It begins with Mark and Gordo, through their young years, teen years, adult years, present time…. And the time slowly tries to tell them that they wasted so much time being apart from each other…… But oh god, how I laughed, how much I cried, how delighted I was to just read about these idiots who made me feel so many things and their bonds and happiness and memories and freaking wolf telepathy. How much I loved the fact that Gordo may have shunned everyone before, but he is slowly opening back again and trying his hardest to protect them all…. And Mark is just sweet god I love him to heaven and back and he tried to make amends and apologize but Gordo would never let him because he couldn’t after all Bennets did to him… Gordo, whose pride stops his love from reaching him…. Robbie and Kelly, who are becoming closer minute by minute. Even if Kelly still doesn’t realize it, rofl. The Team Human (Jessie, Chris, Tanner, Rico) who stood by their sides and never let go, who protect them, who became part of their family and pack and who never stop to make me laugh. AND I really loved that all of them had had a part in something and were not just there for the sake of it. And not to mention the change in Jessie. Jessie is perfect and kickass and I love her bisexual ass so much (or pansexual what was it again?). And Bambi, oh Bambi. She could step on me and I would praise her to heaven because – WHAT IS BETTER THAN A BADASS FEMALE? Oh Kelly and Carter, where do I even start with how much they love each other? How they care so deep, how they would do anything for each other, because Carter, oh Carter – Joe was destined to be an alpha, Carter was first born, but what was Kelly than a child stuck in the middle of them? So Carter showers him with love, because Kelly deserves a world. And Kelly, someone who loves his brothers more than anyone in the world, and no matter what danger it is, he would react. Ox and Joe, the two who had risen so far that they became a threat to others. Both who have sacrificed so much for their love and for their pack and the fact that they share a witch a tether a brother a friend a family member and would do anything for Gordo, as much as Gordo would do anything for them, because he is Joe’s witch and Ox is his tether and they are his strength and sanity and Ox is and always will be Gordo’s alfa as well. And Elizabeth, the strongest queen, mother, support pillar, the one who will do anything for her pack. The best there is. **spoilerish, please skip if you are on mobile* Also Timber wolf, the one I certainly did not expect. (view spoiler)[I certainly didn’t expect his attachment to Carter, rofl, and the fact that (view spoiler)[ he is Gordo’s half-brother. (hide spoiler)] (hide spoiler)] I loved the interactions between all of them. There were plenty of beautiful and heartbreaking and funny dialogues that I just loved so damn much. ►►► OVERALL: JUST READ IT, I BEG OF YOU. The best of all is that no characters are pushed to side. All of them are mains and all of them matter. It ends with mystical moon magic thing. ►►► OTHER IMPORTANT INFO: ⚠ TYPE OF SERIES: series ⚠ Point of View: first POV, single narrator ⚠ Cliffhanger: no ⚠ Triggers: torture ⚠ Love triangle: no ⚠ Angst: lovely and wonderful amount of breaking your heart apart and healing it with unimaginable humor. ⚠ Supernatural: extraordinary werewolves and witches ⚠ Explicit content: yes ►►► REVIEW(S) RELATED TO THIS BOOK: ◈ Wolfsong (Green Creek, #1) ◈ Ravensong (Green Creek, #2) ◈ Lovesong (Green Creek #2.5) ...more |

Well, this was a ride I wasn't expecting to end like this, nor that I would love it this much, after having a very hard time getting into it from the beginning. Must be writing style, but then again considering the mentality of the main character in this story, I got used to it very quickly. This makes TJ Klune excellent writer. And oh boy, at first I felt pangs of sadness and hurt, but I didn't enter the sob territory yet. And then it hit me - the full strength of grief, sadness and despair that even I couldn't recover and had to stop reading so I could continue. But did I mention the amount of fun and games this had? I had so much fun reading about werewolves, considering they are the supernatural creatures i don't specifically like, but here? They were everything? Just... amazing? It's not everyday that a werewolf wants to court someone by hunting animals and dropping them on their significant other's doorstep in a sense: look, it's a rabbit, cook it and eat it! And then later on even recommends hunting a freaking bear (which the other person was like... STOP BEFORE YOU DIE COURTING ME WITH DEAD BEARS GEEZ). Did i mention there were witches too? Except no, they are not a jedi masters nor wizards (no jedi were harmed in reading this book, nor are any Harry potters (you're a wizard harry). So yes, all fun and games and comedy until it hits you in the feels and makes you cry. Jeez. What a mess. ►►► STORY & CHARACTERS: In this world, witches are real, werewolves are real, monsters are real. And they rule in the shadows. In this world, all packs have a witch with them. And all of them have tethers (or special someone, an object, more people) that prevent them from loosing control. For witches, it's the control of their magic. For werewolves, it's the control of their humanity. Alphas, betas and omegas are included of course. Alphas, with their red eyes, commands and protection. Alpha's who have specific ways of handing down their alpha status. Betas, with their orange eyes, who make the pack, who bond with each other, feel each other, talk with each other. And Omegas, who lost their packs, or their leaders with their violet eyes... Did i mention they are huge wolves? All of them? And they also can shift into the mid state if the need arises. Once upon a time, the Bennet family was one of the most revered and respected werewolf lines until an accident happened and the current head of the house lost his father and his son to the hands of a psychopathic wolf seeking revenge. Except the son survived. Except the son was so thoroughly broken that he stopped speaking all together... Joseph (Joe) Bennet who was so lost until he found a lonely teen in the middle of the forest and then smelled.... he smelled him and he smelled like home and he just... reactivated, and started speaking and couldn't stop, couldn't stop talking. The lonely boy in question is our narrator. His name is Oxnard (Ox) and he is "a bit slower than the others and his words come very hard for him." His father abandoned him and his mother, before pratically telling him he was worthless and wouldn't amount to anything and that people would never see him for himself and judge him. You could say that his words never left Ox's head, destroying his image of self worth even more. And yet, they found each other, and before they knew it, a 1o year old boy and 16 year old teen healed each other for years. He was in my arms now. I didn’t want him to fall. He took my face in his hands and squished my cheeks together. “Why do you smell like that?” he demanded. “Where did you come from? Do you live in the woods? What are you? We just got here. Finally. Where is your house?” He put his forehead against mine and inhaled deeply. “I don’t get it!” he exclaimed. “What is it?” And then he was crawling up and over my shoulders, feet pressed against my chest and neck until he clambered onto my back, arms around my neck, chin hooked on my shoulder. “We have to go see my mom and dad,” he said. “They’ll know what this is. They know everything.” This is a story that follows the Bennet pack, their family, their bonds; that follows an estranged witch Gordo, who never wants to have anything else with any kind of packs, not after what happened to him last time; and finally a story about Ox and his mother, humans, who got involved into the affairs of witches and werewolves and monsters that still lure outside of the Green Creek. Do I even have to tell you about the love I felt for all the characters? Because there were a lot of them and I don't know whom I love more because i love them all equally. And there are 14 of them, if i started typing i would never stop. All of them are the greatest, well fleshed out, well developed. Thomas and Elizabeth, the parents of the Carter, Kelly and Joseph, and their uncle Mark who has had a relationship with Gordo, before they left him; Gordo who is a witch, who is hurt by them leaving and vowed never to get attached like that again, Gordo who found his ground with Ox, someone he swore to protect as his friend/brother/father. Elizabeth, a mother who will always be there, who paints her feelings on canvas; Thomas an alpha who will do everything to protect his own, even if they are not related with blood, he will protect even two humans, one of them who helped their youngest recover from the trauma he faced (the kidnapping, blood, torture, destroying the image of family and of bonds, putting a lot of doubts in the head of a very young boy who was scared that the words were true, and that his family gave up on him) and the mother (Maggie) of the teen (Ox) who is fascinated, who isn't scared who cares so much, who is fun, reliable, who will stand up for her son and who knows that her son deserves a world and so much happiness, who dances with him, who gives him love she knows he deserves. Carter and Kelly, two adorable mess makers, the ones who make others laugh, who give light who share their light, who found their light and woved to protect it. Robbie, a lone wolf, not belonging anywhere until he does; Chris, Jessie, Rico and Tanner, humans in Gordo's shop who have no idea their employee is a witch (Jessie is Chris' sister who isn't working for Gordo though). Ox, who is honest to a fault, who doesn't deserve a lot of shit happening to him, who doesn't deserve being bullied for how he is, until he finds friends, family, protection in a strange family; in a strange boy who won't stop talking to him. Ox, whose mother loves him more than anything in this world, yet not even she can't undo the damage his father did to his self worth. But it gets better. Because he deserves a world. And Joe, tiny little werewolf, who was destroyed in the hands of the monster, who withdrew and panicked when he didn't realize where he was, who still had nightmares, who found someone that smelled like home, like family, who gave him back his sanity just by being there. It's a story of healing and falling in love and finding family in the most unlikely people, reforging bonds, dealing with their demons and monsters, facing their fears. this is a coming of age story, where many years pass, where they dont always stay 10 and 16 and where a lot of talking is made about differences, consent, love, sanity... its a story with a huge amount of lgbt representation, including gay, bisexual, ace, etc.... and finally, i loved their relationships and interactions. esp between kelly and carter, ox and joe, ox and gordo.... i just loved it all. ►►► OVERALL: I make myself cry just writing this review because i have so many feels about this huge family of 14 people, where the comedy is gold, and angst is a gold mine. His voice cracked when he said, “You’re awake now. Ox. Ox. Ox. Don’t you see?” ►►► OTHER IMPORTANT INFO: ⚠ TYPE OF SERIES: series ⚠ Point of View: first POV, single narrator ⚠ Cliffhanger: no ⚠ Triggers: torture, kidnapping, traumas ⚠ Love triangle: no ⚠ Angst: nice amount ⚠ Supernatural: extraordinary werewolves and witches ⚠ Explicit content: yes ►►► REVIEW(S) RELATED TO THIS BOOK: ◈ Wolfsong (Green Creek, #1) ◈ Ravensong (Green Creek, #2) ◈ Lovesong (Green Creek #2.5) ...more |

Sometimes you win. You step onto the piste full of hopes and dreams. And sometimes... you're just a stepping stone on someone else's rise to success. Holly, I never expected to love it as much as I do, but I do. I need this comic like I need air. ►First, art is gorgeous. It's Johanna the Mad's art afterall ►Second, the story is so very good, and the closest thing that i can recommend to it is The Foxhole Court, which is actually how I found it. ►Third, I love the characters. ►Fourth, i love swords. ►And fifth of course, it's lgbt. ►►► STORY & CHARACTERS: It's a fencing world. To Nicholas Cox, it's his whole life. Being abandoned by his father, a retired fencing champion, Robert Coste, he wants nothing more than to learn and compete in fencing, doing whatever it takes. That means having to face his own half brother, who is following their father's footsteps by being first, and his newfound rival Seiji Katayama who is under a lot of pressure from being second place and being quite a genius when it comes to fencing. So Nicholas, after suffering a 0-15 point defeat from Seiji, joins the Kings row boys school and... there he finds out... his roomate is Seiji. [image] ►►► OVERALL: Hilarity and angst insues. Final rating: 4.75/5 stars Final rating: 4.75/5 stars
I have read a lot of books, and i remember only one that i could quote all day long - and it was Every Day. Now i add another one to the collection of amazing quotes: "Dawn" from LOGH series. Ofc, it has it's issues, but this is also a very, very old book and it's the first in the series, but mostly, it's a masterpiece. Now here is a thing - Before reading this I had no previous idea of what this story was about - because i never watched legendary anime (ONA) that aired a long time ago and that was a must for sci fi lovers. I went in blind and was not disappointed (along the way i started following the new adaptation that is currently airing). So what is it about? STORY: In the future, mankind strived and expanded to space, abandoning Earth in the progress and becoming Galactic Empire. But - due to fact that it's reign was veeeeeeery similar to a certain country's reign from world war in our history, where the emperor, Rudolf I, decided to root out everyone with "faulty" genes, including even his own children, thus lowering humanity's population by millions (around ~300.000.000). In the meantime, another group of people rebelled, managed to escape, formed an alliance and eventually came to be The Free Planets Alliance. And finally, there is Phezzan, the only planet that is free of their control. So what's happening? The fact that Galactic Empire and Free Planets Alliance are at war for 150 years and nothing has changed ever since. Except... the fact that Annerose von Muller was chosen to be wife of the current emperor, which didn't sit well with her brother - Reinhard. Now his goal is to progress in military and get enough power in politics to free his sister, all the while getting very into the war itself. Which is hard ofc, as poeple scorn him for 1) being too young to progress this far in the world, aka 20 years old and 2) the fact that emperor's wife is his sister 3) that all his achievements so far had been just luck and nothing else. Well. They are wrong. On the other side, in the Free Planets Alliance, there is also a commodore (29 y.o.) Yang Wen-li, who just wanted to study history, found out he was dead broke with the death of his father, and figured out he can only study history if he went to military... which he succeeded in until he beat the academy's best student in simulation and drew attention on himself. Guess where that got him? Higher up in the military. (Which is okay by him as more money = more history books). Anyway, the fact is that our also to-young-to-be-commodore Yang is also underestimated and never asked for opinion when he is usually 90% right is a dooming factor for Alliance and winning factor for Reinhard. This book follows three big battles and happenings in between: 1.) Battle of Astarte - for the control of the region 2) Battle for Iserlohn Fortress - Alliance's plan to occupy the impregnable fortress between Alliance and Empire and finally 3) Battle of Amritsar - a huge gamble attack Ofc, there are many more characters in this but for now it focused mostly on Yang, his adopted son Julian and on the empire's side: Reinhard and his best (and childhood friend) Kircheis. I could talk so much about every single one of them, but sadly I do not have patience for it, so I will put it all under thesis: THE FREE PLANETS ALLIANCE: Yang Wen Li (29): When a foolish general got a million allies killed, a great general killed a million enemies. That was the only difference, and if viewed from the standpoint of absolute pacifism—the kind that said, “I will not kill, even if it means being killed myself”—there was no difference between the two. Both were mass murderers. -hates military, hates command -sarcastic - to the point he will do it in the middle of mourning meeting -brutally honest -dork -lover of history, which is why his strategies are actually good -lazy -would rather retreat than lose his men (in orderly fashion) -very kind and actually a good parent -can be shaken up -feels a lot of guilt for losing and when someone under his command dies Julian Mintz - Yang's adopted son: -actual ace in school, very intelligent -dork too -takes care of house (because he is a neat freak and that's what he did first when he moved in) -loves Yang and idolizes him -happily adopted orphan Frederica Greenhill -has amazing memory -she wanted to serve along with Yang, got her wish come true -Yang's advisor -capable -lovely -i love her okay Alexander Cazelnes -Yang's friend -made Yang adopt Julian -ships Yang with Frederica -is actually a dork Walter von Schönkopf -defected with his family from Empire to Alliance -has a major role in one of the battles -honoooooooooooooor -is awesome THE GALACTIC EMPIRE Reinhard von Lohengramm “Look at them, Kircheis,” Reinhard would whisper. Whenever he saw such nobles, his voice filled with an intense hatred and scorn. “They didn’t get to be where they are today through any effort of their own … They inherited their authority and fortune from their fathers only by reason of blood, and they aren’t even ashamed of it. The universe does not exist to be dominated by such people.” -loves his sister... a lot -loves his best friend... a lot -hates almost everyone else (mostly emperor) -is a genious -no one takes him seriously because he is 20 years old, lol, they are severely underestimating him -he wants to die in battle, preferably glouriously -has really big ambitions -if you are loyal to him, he's gonna reward you nicely -is generally interesting Siegfried Kircheis Kircheis relayed Reinhard’s order to the communications officer, who responded with a slight, quizzical tilt of the head. Kircheis returned a pleasant smile. “Like you, Officer … I’m in no hurry to fight such a tough opponent again. Better to have easy wins than run into enemies we have to praise.” -the best friend, loves both Reinhard and Annerose -would do ANYTHING for them -dork -is a bit scared of how whenever Reinhard advances, he's taken higher up too -honest and pure -always on guard when someone tries to fish information Paul von Oberstein “The Galactic Empire—by which I mean the Goldenbaum Dynasty—must be destroyed. If it were possible, I would destroy it with my own hands. However, I lack the acumen, the power. What I can do is assist in the rise of a new conqueror, that’s all. I’m speaking of you, Your Excellency: Imperial Marshal Reinhard von Lohengramm.” -would have been killed if he was alive in the era of Rudolf, due to fact that he has bad eyes and now had them replaced for artificial ones -tired of your shit -tired of everyone's shit -almost on par with Yang and Reinhard as he can guess what they are both thinking -doesn't want to die because some idiot doesn't listen for reason and doesn't retreat when they should Annerose von Grünewald -Reinhard's sister -history would have been quite different had she not been born -her role may be small, but does she have impact on the overall story - yes! Etc, etc. There is a lot of characters here, but in this book the focus was on Julian, Yang, Reinhard and Kircheis and Oberstein. Which was satisfying for now. OVERALL: Pretty great strategies and battles, great quotes, loveable characters and very good worldbuilding, of which the most of the settings are based on history.
Don;t be alarmed, it's not all so serious. There is plenty of breaks and funny stuff between the characters when they are not in the middle of war and dying. “What’s the matter, Julian? You don’t like walking?”...more |

You see, I read the manga (Sigma) to complete my journey with FMP crew and I loved every moment of it. You see... this does not feature your typical characters. In any case, Sagara Sousuke is definitely not the one you could call standard as he is: 1) literally ex-child soldier who now works as a full pledged soldier in Mithril organisation (that solves wars across the world as a neutral organisation) 2) has no social skills like... at all 3) gets pretty much paranoid over every single thing - which is justified as he is in fact assigned to be a bodyguard for Kaname Chidori (not so ordinary high school student) and that people are really out to get them. And Kaname Chidori... well, she is the only one that can get under his skin - and the change does come through the series. For both of them. Anyway this series is worth it if you want something new. Not to mention it's mecha, meaning giant robots, that are being widely used in the world - BUT! it's a technology that no one is supposed to know - yet. Technology of the future that comes from the "Whispered" - people who have hidden knowledge of the future tech inside of their minds. And if there is one whispered unclaimed... people would definitely go to war just to get their hands on one of them... Also it's very fun and angsty series, give it a try. ...more |

In this area, you will probably never win against Captain.” Oh how i wish for more books in this series. There can never be enough of the 38th generation of the Twelve knights, and the 39th generation. But there was just something lacking - I wasn't that much attached to this generation as I was for the previous one. But overall, i still love those who were present in this book. Thankfully, Yu Wo said that this will be trilogy, but this book can be read as stand alone too. But it felt incomplete because it was not planned to be actual stand alone... Anyway, i loved the switching of the POVs, recalling the past events (see: how to make Adair into a obedient and loyal Sun's Vice Captain by throwing him down the cliff a lot of times) and the new characters were cute and loveable. ► STORY & CHARACTERS: Even though the 38th generation were absolutely close friends, this generation is more like a family, with Elaro being the eldest one (23) among Hungri, who is 17 and rest that are around 15. Basically Elaro is everyone's big brother, and Ludia is everyone's big sister! What was interesting and great was that we finally found out what happened to Awaitsun and the rest (more or less) but there is just this fact that Awaitsun and Alice are waaaaaaaay too busy to maintain their own pack of children. The relationship dynamic between the Storm (Shuis) and Leaf (Valica) knights, between Hungri and Elaro and others, but it mostly focused on these four this time around. Shuis is in a way insecure, because he feels estranged from his own family and he found a brother in Elaro, who is also a brother figure to Valica who is an orphan (just like Elaro) and therefore there is this unsaid hate between Valica and Shuis. As the previous generation of Sun and Judgment knight were, Elaro and Hungri keep each other in check, but this time it's the other way around. This time Elaro is the one who needs to keep rein over Hungri, so he doesn't go overboard with putting his feelings that get in the line of his duty. And finally, the plot happens in "that" period when Grisia and the rest have to go each 6 months. And then something unexpected happens... an undead appears! Overall, this was a fun volume, and I can't wait for more of it, honestly. So a bit of a note from what i gathered who is who... 1. Elaro Sun 2. Shuis Storm 3. Hungri Judgment 4. Valica Leaf 5. Snow Cloud 6. Youg Blaze (????) 7. Valkyrs Metal 8. Judge Earth 9. Absenplum Ice 10. Luke Hell 11. Leo Stone (????) 12. Fey Moon ► SHORT STORIES SECTION: I will inculde the fact that I also read the short stories, and Unbeatable and the short stories about Cloud and the stories of when they were all children were quite awesome. Also, I never expected for Cloud to have such a big trauma, and i believe that Cloud's drifting made him rest for a while, but also explained why he was always willing to say "yes" - because he was traumatized to the point of never saying "no" as a reply. Or how Metal's (view spoiler)[masochistic (hide spoiler)] tendencies came to be because he was so insecure he needed something else to keep him grounded. (Moon, however, might actually have been too immersed in helping him.) Or how poor Storm was so shy he couldn't even look at the girls, and Grisia helped him by making him do Sun's documents and then explaining what needs to be done... And how Grisia was chosen for the Sun Knight, Chasel Judgment's history, Aldrizzt and Neo's relationship and how they first met... I loved them all! ► OVERALL: I just can't wait for any news about this series additions. Even short stories would do, but I highty recommend this series. It does have it's flaws, but everything else makes up for it. But if you are looking for exceptional female lead or secondary character... you won't find them in these books. Only those who pass by in the volumes. But the humor, feels and story are worth it. EDIT 02/10/2017: Good to know that Yu Wo is working on the second book as she put some snippets from the first chapters of the second book! Can't wait! ► REVIEW(S) RELATED TO THIS BOOK: ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 1) ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 2) ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 3) ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 4) ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 5) ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 6) ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 7) ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 8) ◈ 39th Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 9) + short stories ...more |

One could say, almost perfect. Nothing more, nothing less. I still laughed way too much and there were few extremely moving scenes, not to mention the ending, which surprised me! ► STORY: A princess is kidnapped, a future bride of the Son of God of War, Mike, and the condition from kidnapper is that Mike forms an adventurer team and come to get them. What Sun was not expecting was that he and Leaf were gonna become party members. As an archer and a cleric (But Sun is not a cleric, he is clearly a Holy Knight! Ahem...). Ofc his first choice would have been either Judgment or Hell Knight, but apparently, both are unable to come so he had to stick with the nicest guy in the universe, an archer and the pure cutie, the Leaf Knight - Elmairy (or Elmy)! *If you haven't read up to this volume, and wish to remain unspoiled - just in case, then don't read further than this* Thus begins the quest for saving the princess and encountering people Grisia Sun would never want to meet again, because one of them has gold hair, blue eyes and is enough to make even Grisia wish for an escape... The second person though, however, is a dark elf, a despised race, because they are apparently "evil and tricky" bunch. So the biggest problem is... How to deal with the current situation? The answer is simple: follow the stereotypes of rescuing the princess, until something unexpected happens. Short answer: Never ruffle Sun's feathers, because he will never forget any wrongdoings upon him or people he cares about, especially his knights. “Yeah!” Ed, who was behind him suddenly cut in. “No matter how weird he is, he can’t be as weird as our captain!” ► OVERALL: My heart cannot... I just love this series waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much. As for the author's question in the epilogue, the answer is... yes, i figured the way Sun did it. (view spoiler)[ The whole fact that Sun went (view spoiler)[blind, (hide spoiler)] was not that hard to figure out once a reader remembered that he could (view spoiler)[sense elements (hide spoiler)], but he sure got me a few times. Final rating: 5/5 stars ““Remember, child, no matter what the circumstances are, the Sun Knight is always perfect!”Final rating: 5/5 stars ““Remember, child, no matter what the circumstances are, the Sun Knight is always perfect!” edit: added character section! I am crying, The Legend of the Sun knight book series is just too perfect? And yes, it also has a manhua adaptation that covered the first two volumes perfectly, but you should still read these books. You can read them here, translated by princerevolution group who got permission from the author, until there is official translation on English. So grab your chance and read it, so we can get it to be liscenced mwahahhaha! I don't remember the last time i laughed so much when it came to high fantasy? The ideas, the characters, the main character's POV? All of it is hilarious, sarcastic, and just freaking amazing? I cannot even begin to describe the lunacy and greatness of this book. This story made a new definition of stereotypes. 12 knights, who are supposed to follow the stereotype of their respective original knight's personality, traits, appearance and even daily duties and speech, have to stay true even to their mutual relationships. These books follow the journey of the Sun Knight, the most graceful, charismatic, merciful, elegant and kind knight who is everything not described here. He is the sheer opposite of the personality he is supposed to play. So what happens, when a Death Knight appears - a raised corpse who has a goal he needs to fulfill in order to rest in piece - and says he will come back for the Sun Knight? Well, that puts our Sun Knight as a prime suspect of the Death Knight's grugde. How to deal with it? Find a necromancer. ► CHARACTERS: EDIT: After finishing all volumes, I decided to expand this review a bit with the character section. I will put their names under spoiler tags so you can find out eventually as you read! Warm faction: ◈ Grisia Sun: the actual main character, who is expected to be the most elegant, graceful (even when dying or falling down the stairs or fainting), always smiling, benevolent and kindhearted is actually sadistic, grudge holding, sarcastic, unrelenting, brave, dedicated, overprotective and kind towards the people he loves, but he would also use every opportunity to make them owe him favors, do his work and just be lazy in general. He also wants a girlfriend, badly. His best friend is Judgment Knight, who is supposed to be his biggest enemy as he is the leader of the Cold faction and does everything opposite of the Sun Knight. And yet, these two are the true besties, unlike him and Earth, who are supposed to be "besties" but are actually the biggest enemies. ◈Ceo Storm: is supposed to be carefree, never to appear, big flirt with women, always to wink in their presence (also has to dye his hair into blue) but is in actuality a big work a holic and will probably die from correcting all of the documents they throw at him. If he was gone the whole church would colapse! ◈ Georgo Earth: the "honest" and "loyal" and "friend" of the Sun Knight. You can scratch the honest part, because his words are more poisonous than Metal's! He hates Grisia with passion! ◈ Elmairy Leaf: An archer and the nicest person there is. Too interesting that his personality actually matches the first Leaf knight. A mother to the team in a way (but unlike Ice being one), he supports everyone and would do anything for them. Also worries a lot. ◈ Demos Cloud: A drifter who is always there, even when you don't see him. He usually reads books and is librarian, knows all, is super great swordsman and very hard to find. His tragic past allowed him to find peace in duties of the Cloud knight. ◈Chikus Blaze: Another knight whose real personality matches perfectly with the personality of the first knight. He is hot tempered, loves breaking doors (but some doors should never be broken) and specializes in cleansing spirits. Loves Sun Knight with passion. Worries a lot and regrets a lot if he hurts someone by accident. Cold-hearted faction ◈ Lesus Judgement: The leader of the cruel faction. He must never forgive criminals and must exact punishment on them or give the order for it. The criminals must never be forgiven. Yet, it's a duty and personality that is opposite of what he is: trully kind hearted, brother figure, that cares a lot about his brothers and would never abandon any of them, no matter what the cost. He is the only one the Sun Knight will listen to. ◈ Ecilan Ice: supposed to be always calm, collected, and never to show any emotions, and yet he loves summer because he can make people eat his sweets and ice cream, actually feeds the team and is their actual mother figure. ◈Vival Moon: Arrogant, narcissistic and acts like no one is good enough to be in his presence. Actually would do anything for his team (after a bit of persuasion (for example, dealing with Metal's situation on Judgment's query). Only wants a girlfriend who is higher than him. ◈Laica Metal: The knight whose words are supposed to be so bad, that they are poisonous and offensive always. Yet, the problem is that when he tries to do it, he gives out compliments and when he is not trying, he actually succeeds in making people bleed from his words. He gets happy every time someone tells him he was offensive! Not to mention that he hides a deep insecurity that he solves by having a certain tendencies that Moon and Judgment help him out with. idolizes Judgment wayyyyyyyyy too much. ◈ Aivis Stone: As first knight was so stubborn, so should be all of his successors. Yet this Stone is so stubborn for believing that he is not stubborn that he actually fits well with his role. ◈ And finally, the Hell Knight: a shadow Knight who is said to be the shadow of the Sun Knight, but he is never around that some of them think that he doesn't even exist and that he is in actuality, actual Sun Knight's alter ego! Even though he belongs to the cruel cold faction, he answers dirrectly to the Sun knight. ◈ Adair: Grisia's vice captain. will always defend Grisia from anything, is completely loyal, omnipotent, dedicated, and would do anything to keep Grisia safe. Grisia doesn't deserve him, honestly. ◈ Pink: a necromancer that is over two tho- very young girl who is contracted by a church to make undead for the Sun Knight to have something to went out his frustrations on, because the Sun Knight hates nothing more than undead creatures! She is mysterious, filled with many secrets, and hides them well. She has an agenda that may or may not endanger everyone... ◈ Mysterious Death Knight: a resurected person who holds a grudge against the living. To become Death Knight, one must suffer extreme regret/injustice and the only way to kill them or save them is by burning them to the second death, or find the cause of his regret. So why does he want to kill the Sun Knight? Well.... ► OVERALL: Thankfully the series is over, and I recommend it to anyone (ofc i haven't read it on chinese, but it's too perfect, you should try it if you want something for a change).

Right or wrong, seFinal Rating: 4.5/5 Harris sighed. “It’s a strange world, Mr. Hart. I’ll always fight for the promise of an easier tomorrow. Right or wrong, selfish or not, this is what we want.” He nodded to himself. “And that’s enough. Whatever it takes.” Lately I find it difficult with where to start when writing reviews. I loved it, but the plot was kind of predictable - not the general plot itself, but the direction it was heading in and it turned to happen exactly like that! But! So many revelations!!! How the clock tower spirits came to be? Check. Aetas and the rest of the gods actually existing or not? Check. But there are always more questions. I just hadn't expected that the clock spirit's became what they are by that method and it was freaky but it all tied in nicely with what Danny did at the end of the first book. It was interesting, so many things happening at once, and I loved that near the last 40% every character group of chapters ended with cliffhanger and it kept me reading for more. Sometimes the pace fell, but then it picked up quickly. ►►► STORY & CHARACTERS: There are many things happening. First: A terroristic attack in India led to the tower in Rath has not stopped despite being destroyed. The Lead wishes that Daphne and Danny investigate what is going on in India, especially Danny because of the attacks he survived through before. Second: Danny has been living in Enfield for 8 months so far, happily in relationship with Colton. Colton, who has revealed himself to the whole town and is helping them around. “Half an hour ago.” Danny groaned, and the man laughed again. “You’re handy with the clock, and that’s what matters.” The man nodded to Colton, who was now standing beside Danny. “Good work, son.” Third: India and England have been in very strained relationship ever since England occupied India, and made it so their queen is going to be crowned as Queen-Empress of India. Four: And then the Lead summoned both Danny and Colton to go to India to investigate the clock incidents. Both of them accepted because Daphne always wanted to go to India and feel a bit closer with her deceased dad; And Danny accepted because he had to sort his feelings out: he didn't want a repeat of another Maldon incident because Colton and Danny fell in love. Not to mention he still has nightmares, his parents being reunited did make him feel better, but it also became stressful because suddenly - he existed again in his parents' eyes. And then... His father found out by accident that Danny and the clock spirit Colton were in relationship. A forbidden one, to be exact. And did not react well. And when he calmed down from his panic attack and talked to Cassie and Colton about his father finding out, Colton came to conclusion it would be the best just to talk with him instead of avoiding him forever. And finally: As Danny and Daphne go to India, meet Akash, a pilot, and his sister Meena (Indian's clock mechanic), to investigate; Colton's tower had been attacked by an airship, destroying the tower in the process, forcing Colton to bolt with his central cog and Stopping the town itself before leaving to seek the help from the one he knows would be the best choice: Danny's father Christopher. And the threat is looming on the sky, someone who wishes to get their hands on both Danny... and Colton, no matter what it takes. *** Now, let us move on the characters, both old ones and new ones. ➥ Danny has been through a lot of trauma, near death experiences and still has severe case of PTSD, yet he is trying to get better and healing, not only being near Colton, but being in different town, knowing that his parents are finally back together, knowing that their town was safe... But he still thinks about what Colton would do if something happened to Danny. He couldn't bear to be the cause of another Maldon, yet he loves Colton enough that he would risk it. But thinking about it all, he decides it might be for the best if they separated for some time so he could think about it. Danny always questions right and wrong, morals, agendas, thoughts of people around him, trying to find out how they tick, how they think, and always, always, being honest and not holding any breath when it comes to saying exactly how he feels knowing very well that it could get him hurt or worse. But in short, and without sugarcoating it, Danny cannot stand bullshit by other people and will call them out on that. And in the meantime have tons of panic attacks or super moments of bravery and then another panic attack. This is something I loved. He doesn't appear to be that type of "i am strong person so I will provoke you because I am fearless" - he is not. He is afraid, he is afraid to die, he is afraid of what would happen if he was ever captured by the people targeting him - he doesn't know what they plan to do with him, or to do to him and if they are willing to hurt him to get what they want. And at the same time, he is compassionate, would keep secrets if it meant people stayed safe, and would not use them against them. I love Danny for who he is. And no, despite saying he is "fine" he is 98% definitely not fine. ➥ Colton feels a lot lately. Emotions that wreck him so much that it causes his own clock to go beyond control, whenever he is around Danny. He may not feel everything like a human should, and is rediscovering his lost emotions, but there is a fact that his emotions could make things a lot worse for Enfield if he doesn't control them. This is one of the reasons Danny chose to leave him, with the promise of being back. Both of them have to sort out their relationship before they can move on. Meanwhile, he is still the same old curios spirit.... until.... an airship wrecks his tower, leaving him no choice but to leave Enfield alone, choosing to stop the town with agreement from his people before his tower completely falls apart. So he relies on only person he trust to help him - Danny's father. He did not exactly get a warm welcome, but he was promised that he would be fixed as soon as possible. And yet... he cannot stand to show Danny's parents the threat letter sent to Danny and it's eating him inside. Instead, he shows it to Cassie and Brandon, and later gets his own threat letter: Go to India, or else. But how can he, a clock spirit, leave England? Well, thank Christopher and his team for finding a solution. So Colton takes courage to go, alone, to another country... “I’m sorry,” he said quietly. “I can’t wait for you this time.” Meanwhile, something unexpected keeps happening to Colton. Never in his long life had he had dreams. Dreams of two teenagers, Bell and Castor; Bell - who had sick sister, Castor: who was infatuated with Bell; both of them who were connected to time. Who are they, and why does he dream of people he doesn't know? “I missed you,” Castor whispered. ➥ Daphne has a lot going on in her life. Her father is dead, her mother in asylum and she needs money and recognition. She is female mechanic and she needs to prove herself. Getting to go to India was something she wanted and eagerly decided to do, because she would feel closer to her heritage from the other side. She connects with more people along the way, gets on better terms with Danny, shares her sorrows, past, hopes and dreams, and being invincible and unyielding. Despite being cold at the beginning and making her mistakes, she redeemed herself. ➥ Meena and Akash are Indian siblings who are in charge of Danny and Daphne when they arrive. Meena is a ghadi wallah, a clock mechanic, and like every other mechanic, she doesn't believe in clock spirits. In the meantime, their religion and their gods differ from England's and so does the origin story, which was quite interesting as there were parallels between the stories and myths. Meena is also a female clock mechanic, which is another thing that she shares with Daphne: both of them are being frowned upon from breaking from stereotypes, from daring to become investing into something only men should do, instead of being good wives and doing whatever they have as good females. This irritates her, and also irritates her brother, who cares about his sister more than anything. Akash in the meantime is easy going guy, the carefree but also seriously protective brother and a man who loves having fun. And then he finds someone veeeeeeeeeery interesting to interact with. ➥ Harris and Partha are two soldiers who were told to take care of Daphne and Danny. Although being Englishman and Indian, the two of them grew closer, despite knowing what would happen if someone EVER found out that they were in relationship. Which happens, unfortunately, by Danny and Meena. Although they promise not to tell, especially Danny, who finds himself in quite the similar situation and he feels what they have is strong enough. ►►► OVERALL: So many things happened, and so many characters have been in it, that If i continue to write I will spoil everything. So I am putting another spoiler section bellow, to share my thoughts on the rest of the book before the last one comes out. ►►► SPOILER SECTION: READ ONLY IF YOU READ THIS BOOK: (view spoiler)[ I found Zavier interesting but i also need to know more to know for sure. Final rating: 4/5 stars “Scale of one to ten First, let me tell you something. Rick Riordan i Final rating: 4/5 stars “Scale of one to ten First, let me tell you something. Rick Riordan is my hero. I love all of PJ books, and I was so SO happy when he put lgbt into the books. But you know what's even better? Bisexual main character! How rare is that?? Now, many would have dropped this book just for the mention of having bisexual character. I read around ten 1 star rated reviews on amazon for the laughs. Why? Because most of them gave it 1 star because it had lgbt main character. Seriously? Most of those reviews came from parents! Some even included religion into it. I will say once again, thank you, Rick Riordan for giving me opportunity to read about bisexual character. I didn't give it 5 stars or higher, because honestly - it wasn't as good as heroes of olympus. I have a love-hate relationship with 1st person POV, but I liked Apollo's POV. The reason why I gave it 4 stars is because there is literally one POV. When I read, I want to read about multiply characters. There were so many scenes where different POVs would work out perfectly. (Do you want me to say how much I needed Will's, Nico's, Meg's, Austin's and Kayla's POVs? Well now you do. I needed them. So damn much.) That's the con of writing first person books. But did I enjoy it? Yes! I didn't mind reading from Apollo's perspective. Our hero this time is banished-god-turned-mortal, left without any powers, on a crazy mission and bonded to a cute little badass 12 year old girl Meg. Now, you believe that a god that lived for many thousand years would be wise old man. Well, nope. He was turned into 16 year old, with a partly amnesia, without any of his talents and powers. Who does he turn to? Percy Jackson (who was once: PERCY IN, now he is PERCY OUT). But if you are reading it for Percy... well, you won't be seeing him much. What you will get though: - - Sally Jackson ♥ - Will being older than his own dad - A canon gay couple because hell yes (view spoiler)[ Will & Nico (hide spoiler)]. - Apollo's wonderful kids - Nico is happy! (And no, it doesn't take away his character, Nico deserved to come out of the angsty ball he put himself into, and I love that he is able to move on. Remember, Nico was genuinely happy and energetic kid before all of the shit hit the fan). - Apollo is bisexual shitlord (he planned to still a girlfriend from her boyfriend, and then thought he wouldn't mind doing otherwise either), not to mention stories of his other conquests. But when you replay the previous books, there was a story about him having a male lover who met... an unfortunate end - Apollo is a cutie, apparently sings well enough to throw a lot of teens and a professor into... you will see - Apparently gods are bisexual, bless you - One of the characters has 2 dads - Nico "I have a doctor’s note" Di Angelo, uses it for everything he does - Nico "I won't faint" *actually faints* - Uh... Killer ants? Scary ants - Apollo's haikus - Roman history strikes again - Apollo has big flaws, he is not perfect, and ever since he became human, he started understanding it - Guess who is back? (view spoiler)[ Calypso and Leo! (hide spoiler)] - There are a lot of heartwarming, sad and cute and happy moments - I actually didn't see that one coming, thank you for this betrayal, now im gonna suffer - Of course there are some bits really put there for kids, but then again, does having your limbs cut of counts as kid stuff? I honestly don't know - Cute little Harley from Hermes Cabin, planning deadly races and traps - Missing campers - Weird voices - When in doubt, break your oaths on river Styxx and wait for demise later. Better later than now anyway - Lovely side characters - New villains and heroes ► OVERALL: I loved it. Like i said, not as good as previous books, but worthy of reading. Be warned though - Apollo has very high opinions of himself, which spirals into despair, which then rises into heights, etc. If you don't mind his mood swing (which I thought was great) and if you don't mind lgbt stuff thrown into this book, then I highly recommend it. I hope the other books in the series will be even better, because I have a lot of faith in RR. OTHER IMPORTANT INFO: ⚠ Standalone: No. Part of a series. ⚠ Point of View: First POV, 1 character. ⚠ Cliffhanger: No ⚠ Triggers: severed limbs, giant deadly ants, maybe a bit of gore but not too much? ⚠ Love triangle: Thank god no ⚠ Angst: Yep ⚠ Supernatural: Yep ⚠ Explicit content: Nope ⚠ Ending type: undefined ⚠ Recommended: Yes ...more |

Be anyone but himself, and never be anyone for too long.” CONSIDERING I'M STILL THINKING ABOUT THIS SERIES, TWO MONTHS LATER, AND I CAN'T LITERALLY STOP THINKING ABOUT IT OR HOW NONE OF THE BOOKS I READ RECENTLY CAN'T MEASURE NOR COMPETE, I BEG YOU TO PLEASE READ IT ALL. Oh boy, you are either going to HATE it with passion for it's clearly not so well defined nor thought out things or LOVE IT for the sake of characters that are amazing, and other two books. Because, oh boy lemme tell you. This is the second try I had with this book. Started it out a long time ago as a buddy read, but finished it now on my friend's request. First time, I disliked the writing style and stopped reading. After few nudges from a friend, and her promise of great characters and suffering/angst, I gleefully joined the ride. So this is the deal. Some things are really illogical, as you will notice while reading it, but considering the pros outweight the cons in my own weight in gold, I won't talk about it. When I read books I read them for only one thing as a priority = characters. If the characters are not interesting, if they are not well developed, if they don't amount to anything, then no matter how good or original the story is, it's going to be horrible. But, if the characters are great, even bad story lines can be redeemed. In this case, while the first book didn't really blew my mind out, the other two did. I started to care more and more for the characters, and I found their imaginary "Exy" sport fun. ►►► STORY & CHARACTERS: There are many characters in this book, but three of them stick out like a candle, namely Niel "I'm fine" Josten (our actual protagonist and narrator - in third person), Kevin Day (someone who knows who Neil is, but is oblivious because Neil hides his identity well), and Andrew Minyard (who has a promise to keep and who protects Kevin, even from Neil himself). The book itself starts with Neil settling in a faraway town, playing what he loves: Exy, a hybrid sport between Lacrosse and Hockey (imaginary game, of course). But then, a coach from another school comes seeking him out for recruitment. Neil's own coach sent his files to David Wymack, who - along with Andrew Minyard (who is here because he's not letting Kevin go anywhere alone) & Kevin Day (as he was familiar face because he abandoned the first ranked team Edgar Allan's Ravens due to an incident in which his arm was broken) and they came to see if Neil was indeed fitting the mold that Palmetto's Foxes fit in. Wymack's first opinion onNeil's past issue is abusive parents. Because every movement, every flinch from Wymack proves just that. Neil's paranoia, Neil's parents never showing up, unable to reach them.... This all gives off warning signs. Which is .... partly true. Neil Josten indeed has very abusive father, who is a part of crime family, and is hunting down his late mother (who died very recently from the beginning of the first book) and Niel (whose real name isn't Neal) to the edge of the world. Nowhere is safe for him, he is alone and if his father finds out where he is, with whom he is, and gets him - well... he's not going to be welcomed back, but tortured and then killed after who knows how long. All of this is really not a great reminder that he can do whatever he wants including going somewhere else, especially since Kevin Day is someone who actually knew him when he was younger. But Neil wears eye contacts, dyes his hair and looks different in general because he is much older than when Kevin first met him, so he is relying on that fact that he can actually choose to stay and play what he wants to play. The one thing I really loved about Neil is that he is so detached from some of the normal stuff that he would smile at something crashing and burning (or dying) if it means he gets out alive or that someone he cares about gets alive (and is not shaken at all). Considering what kind of enviroment he grew up in, it would be strange to react any different way (or not, considering he's been out of that for years). But i loved it. So yes, in short, this whole story is about how fast can Neil run away if shit goes wrong. You see, Neil has to hide his identity and looks, but his certain characteristics.... like... not being able to stand by and instead roasts someone LIVE on TELEVISION while IN HIDING certainly doesn't speak much of his actual survival insticts, but given what happened at that point in order for Neil, who is - like i said before - extremely paranoid person, well... you see. But anyway, I loved Neil, because he is such well thought out character. He is loyal, he is paranoid, but if he cares about someone, he will fight for them, no matter what the cost. Even though any sense of relationships and normal life had been beaten out of him, he's attracted to them like Icarus was attracted to Sun. He flies and flies, but he eventually knows that he will fall down from the heights into his own demise. Kevin as well, as someone who is actually a third important person in the series - considering it was on his request that Neil's accepted into his own team - has also a stunning amount of character growth and his issues are sorted out (which is where Neil and Kevin are similar: they are both running away from their so called families, and both get panic attacks whenever they get too close to them, so yeah). To the point that he finally takes his own chances and does the right thing. An ex Exy champion, who was as stunning as they come, who was left handed before the incident, before he was forced to step down and try his best to use his non dominant hand... And one thing connecting them all is Andrew. Andrew protects Kevin from others, because Kevin promised he would help Andrew find something to live for. And Andrew is the type that has been betrayed his whole life, so he takes a very serious look on promises and keeps all of them till the end and makes them come true. And Andrew, who is as fucked up, who dislikes being touched, who is suspicious of everyone who is different, who sees Neil for who he is (a pathological liar) but still appreciates the little truths is just... amazing. One thing I did dislike is that Andrew's disorder was not mentioned in the book, but it's in fact (as confirmed by the author) manic depression. Just heads up. The first meeting with Neil included a racquet and hitting the main character with it to stop him from running, all while he grins like a psycho. He is called the whole time a tiny psycho so no wonder. You are either going to hate or love him (view spoiler)[ like how much he hates Neil, for example hahahaha (hide spoiler)]. I love him. He's just so complicated and interesting in general. Another beautiful and worthy mention is Renee, who also had a past full of knives and violence, a good Christian that can help even the most desperate, who is "a bad person trying to be one." I loved her growth through the series, her help, her dedication to the others. Dan and Allison as well were great, these girls who are bold, who will fight for those they love, who will take no shit, who will rise up and challenge. Dan, who was laughed at for being a female captain, and Allison who loves Seth so much that she thinks of his health, helps him out, and no matter how many issues they had, they did it all together... Allison, who rejected her parent's fortune so she could play. They all needed help and they found a family in bunch of idiots (and later on including the monster group (aka Andrew's group)). Seth, who cares only about Allison... Then there is Aaron, a twin brother of Andrew, who btw, did not actually grew up together with Andrew and couldn't give a shit about anything. But then again, he and Andrew have made a promise, and Andrew will be damned if he did not keep his own end up of bargain - which he did and Aaron is now well aware of what kind of person his older twin is. But even so, he strives, he tries, he wishes so many things, and yet he is held back by a promise and of thought of not failing it. because he knows the consequences if he doesn't hold his end of the deal. There is also Nicky, who has a boyfriend in Germany, whose family didn't approve of his sexuality, who ended up estranged from them, who tries his best to help his cousins (aka the twins) who just tries so hard to help. Who is interesting, who needed help, who got help, who found the help (who someone oversteps his bounds and does questionable things sometimes but then again...) Matt who is fascinated with everything. Who will protect whatever and whoever he can, he's stable, reliable, interesting. Wymack who made a team of people who were screwed up in life in order to help them see that they could become someone important. That they could be seen. That they would be needed. They might start from zero, from being nothings, but he knows that his children have a big potentional and that they just need a push and a glue that sticks them together... Wymack, who is everything a real parent is supposed to be. Abby and Betsy a doctor and psychiatrist who help hold the team together, who listen to them, who take care of their injuries and their shattered feelings, who know how to help, how to heal their broken hearts. And so on and on.... Overall, I have so many feels about whole team in general: the fact that they bet on everything, that they get along as much as they don't, the fact that they are there for each other, even when they don't and can't stand each other... And when I tell you this book has LGBT, I kid you not. It really has. So if you wanna read it for this, go ahead! It's not a bait, and certainly delievers, so be prepared to guess who are the end game couples in this :D That is, if everyone survives till the end of book 3. it's a story about survivors, and their journeys to better futures, better lives, overcoming their traumas and battling their demons. I promise that book 2 and 3 are worth reading it. Also check this great FAQ from author when you are done for more info :D ►►► OTHER IMPORTANT INFO: ⚠ TYPE OF SERIES: Trilogy: All for the game.
