Disjointed
I’m not a fan of Jeffery Archer as a person, but he has written some great novels. His latest crime thriller Over My Dead Body illustrates many glimpses of his keen ability to develop police procedural plots with complexity and pace. Overall, though, this was a book that left me frustrated and shaking my head.

Typical of me, I’m jumping into a series at book four. That said, Over My Dead Body does have the feel of a standalone book, precisely because at this point, Commander Hawksby, aka The Hawk, has established the Unsolved Murder Unit, a cold case investigation team led by Chief Inspector William Warwick. The other team members include Detective Inspector Ross Hogan, DS Paul Adaja, DS Jackie Roycroft and DC Rebecca Pankhurst. Warwick and Hogan are the real compelling characters in the team; William for his analytical style and investigative talent, and Hogan for his unique perspectives having been an undercover agent for a long time.

The book starts with William and his wife Beth travelling first-class on a cruise liner to New York. Also onboard are the Buchanan family, who own the ship and the Pilgrim Line. Chairman of the Pilgrim Line is Fraser Buchanan, who dies at dinner one evening – was he poisoned or had a heart attack. The captain, doctor, and some family members seem keen to accept a heart attack and to have Fraser buried at sea without an autopsy. Fortunately, William Warwick is on hand, and if the Gods hadn’t already had a bet on William to solve the murder, along comes James Buchanan, Fraser’s grandson, and someone who admired his grandfather. James wants to be an FBI agent drawing on his astute powers of observation and analysis and conveniently provides all the missing pieces that William needs to prove murder.

Another story thread starts, where William realises that a master thief, and his nemesis Miles Faulkner, whom he presumed dead, has altered his name and appearance (now Captain Ralph Neville) and intends to marry someone close to Beth. Realising he’s been copped, Miles makes a run for it, and the team give chase. When that concludes, the team splits up the cold cases within the unit, and each member leads an investigation. Each case brings its own twisty and fast-paced drama, although some of the antics are as odd as a bottle of chips.

There are great moments to enjoy the storytelling craft from Jeffery Archer, but this book as a piece of work felt far too disjointed. It was almost as if the first 30% was a separate short story. Not really a book I could recommend, but many others have enjoyed this book. I want to thank Harper Collins and NetGalley for providing me with a free ARC in return for an honest review.

EXCERPT: 'Are you a detective, sir?'

William looked up at the young man who'd asked the question. 'No, I'm the assistant manager of the Midland Bank in Shoreham, Kent.'

'In that case,' continued the young man, not looking convinced, 'you'll be able to tell me what the exchange rate was between the dollar and the pound when the currency market opened this morning.'

William tried to remember how much he'd received when he changed a hundred pounds into dollars just before he'd joined the ship the previous evening. But he hesitated for too long.

'One dollar and fifty-four cents to the pound,' said the young man before he could reply. 'So, forgive me for asking, sir, why aren't you willing to admit you're a detective?'

William put the book he was reading on the table in front of him and took a closer look at the earnest young American who seemed desperate not to be thought of as a child, although he hadn't started shaving. The word 'preppy' immediately came to mind.

'Can you keep a secret?' he whispered.

'Yes, of course,' the young man said, sounding offended.

'Then have a seat,' said William, pointing to the comfortable chair opposite him. He waited for the young man to settle. 'I'm on holiday, and I promised my wife that for the next ten days I wouldn't tell anyone I was a detective, because it's always followed by a stream of questions that turn it into a busman's holiday.'

But why choose a banker as your cover?' asked the young man. 'Because I have the feeling you wouldn't know the difference between a spreadsheet and a balance sheet.'

'My wife and I gave that question some considerable thought before we settled on a banker. I grew up in Shoreham, a small town in England, in the sixties, and the local bank manager was a friend of my father's. So I thought I'd get away with it for a couple of weeks.'

'What else was on the short list?'

'Estate agent, car salesman, and funeral director. All of which we were fairly confident wouldn't be followed by never ending questions.'

The young man laughed.

'Which job would you have chosen?' asked William, trying to regain the initiative.

'Hitman. That way nobody would have bothered me with any follow up questions.'

'I would have known that was a cover immediately,' said William with a dismissive wave of his hand. 'Because no hitman would have asked me if I was a detective. He would have already known. So, what do you really do when you're not a hitman?'

MY THOUGHTS: I first read Jeffrey Archer in 1979,or shortly thereafter, having bought my father Kane and Abel as a gift, which I promptly borrowed back to read. My father is long passed away, but I still have that copy. Thus began my love affair with this extraordinarily talented storyteller.

Now in his eighties, he certainly hasn't lost his touch, and has created a wonderful character in William Warwick who has risen to the rank of Detective Chief Inspector (youngest in the history of the Met), and also in Ross Hogan, an ex-undercover agent and loose cannon.

The cruise that William and his delightful and clever wife Beth are taking, doesn't turn out to be the relaxing holiday they were planning on. A suspicious death on board puts paid to that, and William leaves his wife in New York after they dock and flies back to England where he becomes embroiled in a plan to catch the escaped, and previously thought dead, criminal Miles Faulkner.

Over My Dead Body is fast paced and kept me spellbound from beginning to end. It's not often that I will listen to an audiobook in two days, but I had my earbuds in every chance I had. It's brilliantly written, with plots and subplots, twists, turns and drama. I frequently had my heart in my mouth, and at one point I called out a very loud and anguished, 'Nooo!' If you read Over My Dead Body, and I hope that you do, you will know exactly at which point I did this.

Archer has left me on the edge of my seat, waiting for #5 in this planned series of 8 books.

Narrator George Blagden gave an excellent performance, but then I would expect nothing less from such a distinguished actor.

At the end of the audiobook is an excellent interview with Jeffrey Archer. Please don't skip this, it's priceless.

I have not read a Jeffery archer book in such a long time and I forgot just how detailed his plots can be. There is so much going on in this book and I flew through the audiobook of it in a day.

This is the 4th book in the series featuring DCI William Warwick and the first that I have read. I did not realise this when requesting it and I have to admit that I felt quite confused. I do feel that I missed a lot due to this. My mistake entirely.

In saying that though, I really enjoyed the story and the face paced nature of it. It will take you across the world, and into worlds you will never dream of. It starts on a cruise ship where the DCI and his wife are trying to have a lovely holiday together. But a mysterious death on board and he puts his detective hat back on and it all spirals from there.

Thanks to Harper Collins UK Audio. The narration was great and I loved the interview at the end.

Over My Dead Body by Jeffrey Archer is the latest book featuring Detective Chief Inspector William Warwick a rising star, the youngest DCI in the Met’s history.

The story begins with Warwick and his wife holidaying aboard a luxury cruise liner where a suspicious death takes place and William is asked to investigate.

Back in London a new unsolved murders unit is set up and William is given the task of heading it up and solving four cold cases.

Meanwhile Miles Faulkner entrepreneur, art collector and thief who supposedly died in Switzerland may have surfaced again! Warwick is intent on tracking him down.

I enjoyed the way ex-undercover operative Ross Hogan did things not exactly by the book! He was engaging and easily my favourite character in the book. I also enjoyed learning about the way so many people are involved in the transport of valuable paintings and how they are packed and transported, eye opening!

This was my first Jeffrey Archer novel, it was a fast paced, easy read which I enjoyed.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Over My Dead Body.

This bust of a read is on me.

I didn't realize this was the fourth book in a series, and though I didn't have much trouble keeping up with the present circumstances of Warwick and his team of police officers, I can safely say this was a dud.

My issue was the writing style and tone; it was overly wordy, full of filler and superfluous characters, and much longer than it had to be.

The beginning where Warwick faces off with a teenage J. Edgar Hoover wannabe on a cruise ship was full of 'witty repartee' or so the author hoped it sounded like.

Instead, I found it tedious, contrived and headache-inducing.

There were plenty of subplots as the team of police officers scramble to resolve cold cases as Warwick attempts to locate and re-arrest his Moriarty-like nemesis, Miles Faulkner.

But, the most ridiculous subplots included one of the cops falling in love with a sex worker; they end up getting married because she's pregnant. Seriously.

It was so corny and absurd I laughed out loud.

What is this: the old timey fun timey version of Pretty Woman?

I would not have laughed aloud if I didn't suspect the author wrote this part with sincere intentions. Which disturbs me greatly.

Fans of the author's previous works may enjoy this, but I found this too ridiculous.

I ended up skimming most of it when I realized how filler heavy this was.

Excellent plot! Different cases investigated by William Warwick and his team with an addition of an important member that plays a crucial part in solving most of them!

William and the new member of his team worked exceptionally together, and I hope that this partnership is repeated in the next book!

Over my dead body, I consider the best one of the series!

The investigations have the detectives travel into various cities in which they make new friends and allies!

Set in the 1980' has a different investigative progress and a nostalgic aura!

Suspenseful and intriguing! The only reason I've not rated it with 5 stars is because dear Jeffrey Archer didn't solve one mystery because I like Artemisia and Peter wanted to know who did it! 🤣🤣

Maybe a timing issue for me, but this one didn't "ding as many dongs" as the other three books in the series for me.

Detective William Warwick and his wife, Beth, reappear on a cruise liner this time. It's 1988, and they travel to New York on tickets given to them by Christina (aka as the wife of Miles Faulkner).

Enter one of the standout characters of the novel, young (and extremely affluent, want-to-be FBI agent) James Buchanan, the grandson of the ship's owner, Fraser Buchanan - who unexpectedly dies aboard.

This is where it lost me - William is asked to investigate. Of course, all roads (or seas) lead to this being a murder and ultimately to his nemesis Faulkner and ever-present extremely annoying Booth-Watson.

A bit predictable, a bit pompous/elitist in places, a bit repetitive (Faulkern storyline) in other areas. At times a little too chaotic with multiple mysteries and plot threads. There is the requisite crime story arc, a few surprises, trademark British tones, and a decent pace, making this a relatively enjoyable Book Four.

Archer is a master storyteller, and if you're invested in the series, there is a reveal at the end.

This is by far the best book of the series, in my opinion.
But still, there is nothing remarkable about it.
The writing is very engaging, as I expected.
The storyline has a great flow and I found entertaining, but its development was, as like another reviewer said, quite disjointed and far from thrilling, but not boring, although very predictable.
Once again, everyone is extremely polite.
This a very easy (perhaps too easy - it did feel a bit juvenile and hard to believe that it was written by someone who is 80 years old ) and a fast read that may please first time readers.

Jeffrey Archer is back for another thrilling adventure with William Warwick at the helm. This series, rich with plots and character development, is sure to catch the eye of the reader who enjoys a ‘full in’ experience, using wonderful narrative twists to keep the story advancing until the final paragraph. Warwick is ready to tackle a new adventure, or a few of them, as a new ‘cold case’ squad is assembled within the Metropolitan Police. There, he will travel around Europe, trying to piece together some of the cases that no one else has been able to solve. All the while, one of his greatest nemeses continues to work off the grid, seeking to build an empire while appearing to have already died. Archer does a masterful job of taking the reader along for the ride and showing that he is a true master when it comes to writing.

While every police officer must work hard to earn their keep, William Warwick knows the importance of rest and rejuvenation as well, choosing to take his wife on a cruise across the Atlantic to New York. During their voyage, Warwick and his wife, Beth, encounter some drama, as the ship liner’s owner dies aboard, potentially in less than innocent circumstances. Befriending a young man who seeks to follow in his footsteps, Warwick helps to uncover some truths that might not have been revealed otherwise, showing that a detective is always ‘on duty’.

Warwick has seen a great deal during his time with London’s Metropolitan Police, but he is never sure what to expect when he arrives at the office each day. Upon his return from holiday, he’s put into a new and intriguing Unsolved Murders Unit, known colloquially as ‘the Cold Case Squad’, to help bring to justice those who have slipped through the cracks. Working with a former undercover agent, Warwick begins tackling the pile of cases, in hopes of earning the favour of his superiors.

At the top of the list is trying to nail down the elusive Miles Faulkner, a millionaire with nefarious ideas who is said to have died a few months before. Warwick cannot deny that many can attest to the man’s death, but something does not sit right with him. Duplicity was never something from which Faulkner strayed and there’s something off about what’s been going on of late.

While Warwick finds himself racing across Europe to work through the cold cases, he’s always on the lookout for new or clues as to where Miles Faulkner may have landed, as well as how he is trying to build his empire anew. Warwick must act swiftly in order to earn his keep, but also try his best to be aware of how he might entrap his greatest nemesis once and for all. A brilliant piece that keeps the reader enthralled until the very end, as per a usual Jeffrey Archer story!

I have long been a fan of Jeffrey Archer’s writing, shelving any of the personal controversies people may bring up in conversation. His stories are not only well-plotted, but they have a great deal of adventure and build off one another effectively. There is a richness to them and this series has not lacked any of the impact throughout its development. With a proposed eight novels in the series, Archer has penned half of them, with a lot of ground to cover yet. I am eager to be a part of it, as I know there are many twists yet to be revealed.

William Warwick continues to climb the ranks within the Met, even if some of those around him are sure he will stumble. It is his tenacity that makes him alluring to the reader, though he also has a great wit and numerous detective skills needed to showcase his abilities. Warwick’s personal and professional growth in the novel is apparent, allowing series fans to see changes in him as the novels progress, while also dazzling those who are new to Warwick and many of his nuances.

Anyone entering a Jeffrey Archer novel should be ready to succumb to a vast array of narrative twists, sub-plots, and truly dazzling writing. There is much that comes to light in each novel, requiring a great deal of attention as the story progresses. Archer develops his narrative quickly and does not stop throughout the story, adding momentum with each plot twist and character development moment. Always adding layers of new characters, Archer provides more names to following and connects them to the larger story arc. There is a buzz around this series, as I can never tell what is to come and how William Warwick will react to what’s put before him. Still, it’s great to know that Archer has ideas and drafts of future novels ready, showing that it is only a matter of time before my curiosity is sated.

Kudos, Lord Archer, for another winner. I am eager to see what is to come!

This is the fourth instalment of the Detective William Warwick saga and a real rollercoaster of a book.

As usual in this twisty thriller from the Master of the pen, there's murder, revenge and betrayal I think this book could be read as a standalone, but for the fullest enjoyment I would recommend starting at the beginning of the series.

William starts off on a cruise liner to New York with his wife for a rare break, but before long becomes embroiled in death on the ship and then flies back to London to continue investigations into the previously thought dead Miles Faulkner. We meet all the characters from the series and find out how their lives are moving on with various side stories along the way, bring it all to life. A thoroughly exiting read.

A big thank you to Harper Collins Audio for the chance to listen to and review this audio version on Over my dead body by Jeffrey Archer and read by George Blagden who is an extremely good narrator with some excellent voices. It was a joy to listen to and cant wait until the next book is released.

At the end of the audiobook was an interview with Jeffrey Archer which should not be missed and gives you a great insight into how he thinks and writes his books. I could not believe how many drafts Jeffrey makes of his books to ensure they are absolutely perfect. I'm also looking forward to the remainder of the series and only hope he remains in good health and is able to complete the series and many more besides as he's now in his 80s.

The William Warwick meteoric rise up the London Metropolitan Police Force ranks continues unabated in Over My Dead Body, the 4th book in Jeffrey Archer’s police procedural series. A new Unsolved Murders Unit has been set up by the Met, a cold case squad, and Warwick, now a Detective Chief Inspector, is assigned the group’s head officer.

Before William takes up his duties with the newly formed group, he and his wife Beth have embarked on a luxury cruise to New York. The cruise comes courtesy of Miles Faulkner, or to be more precise, his ex-wife. After escaping from prison Faulkner had staged his own death in a bid to shake the tail that William and his colleagues had placed on him. It was a ploy that’s doomed to failure.

While on the cruise ship, a suspicious death takes place prompting some detective work to be done by William. He also happens to make the acquaintance of a young American, an aspiring policeman himself, whose family happens to own the cruise ship company they’re sailing with. There’s a definite feeling that we’re going to hear more about this young man in future books in the series.

No sooner have William and Beth reached New York when he’s racing back to England to be part of the hunt for the not-so-late Faulkner. He may still own squillions worth of rare art and is planning to remarry his ex-wife to ensure she can’t get her hands on his loot but the man is still up to his criminal ways. All while hiding out in a Spanish estate.

It’s only when Faulkner reaches out and attacks the family of one of the Met officers that things really take off and the slow and methodical police work of the Unsolved Murders Unit is replaced by an absolute frenzy of retribution. This comes courtesy of DI Ross Hogan. Until now, Hogan has been an undercover officer and played small parts in a couple of the previous books. All that changes when he chucks the rulebook, goes rogue and becomes extremely inventive when it comes time to clear up some of those pesky cold cases.

Clearly, Lord Archer was as sick to death of the woefully inept Met officers and the rules that hamper any decent policing as I am. Unleashing DI Ross Hogan on the unsolved cases being, frankly, bungled by William and his team, is a wonderfully refreshing injection of high octane action - even if it appeared to be much to William Warwick’s chagrin.

There is definitely a feeling of sameness about the story, now that we’re 4 books deep into the series and many of the same storylines are being repeated. What we do get, however, is a more developed cast of characters with the introduction of new members of the team of detectives, some of whom show promise. Their diverse backgrounds and levels of experience ensure that there’s an interesting mix. Those who’ve worked with William from the start are starting to feel like old friends.

Over My Dead Body once again showcases Jeffrey Archer’s ability to put together a complex plot that offers intrigue and uncertainty as to where it’s finally heading. There’s definitely a sense of a change in momentum to the series and will definitely be more enjoyable to those who’ve read at least one of the earlier books in the series.

Let me start by saying I’m a big fan of Jeffrey Archer. His seven-book The Clifton Chronicles is one of my favorite series. The character of William Warwick was introduced in that series. Warwick is an emerging star in the London Metropolitan Police Force. Over My Dead Body is the fourth book showcasing Warwick's incredible crime-solving skills.

It is 1988 and Warwick has been promoted to Detective Chief Inspector. He is now heading a new Unsolved Murders Unit and the team is assigned several cold cases - each involve someone who the police believe got away with murder. In addition to his new assignments, Warwick’s nemesis, Miles Faulkner, a millionaire art collector and thief, is still on the loose. His funeral and recent plastic surgery does not disguise the fact that he is very much alive and hiding from Warwick and his team.

This latest installment is an entertaining book filled with an appealing cast of detectives as well as Warwick’s loving and supportive family and some interesting people he meets on a luxury cruise ship traveling from London to New York where a murder takes place. While the story in book #4 is a complete one, with some heart-pumping action, it is designed to keep you wanting (and reading) more. It’s planned to be an eight-book series and I’m committed to it. While you can certainly jump on board with Archer’s latest book, this is one of those series that you should read from the beginning. Jeffrey Archer writes in such an effortless manner that I flew through each book. As the action was heating up and the detectives had to play the waiting game, I loved this line – “surveillance was a cat and mouse game and patience was the cheese in the trap.” It’s fast-paced with sharp, smart writing.

Many thanks to Harper 360/HarperCollins, NetGalley, Edelweiss+ and the author for the opportunity to read Over My Dead Body in advance of its October 19, 2021 publication.

Rated 4.25 stars.

Detective William Warwick is back again in the fourth book of the series. And this time he's chasing a ghost! I won't go into that, let it be a surprise. I really enjoy the character William Warwick with his "choir boy" reputation and his great deduction skills. All the characters from the series are back in this tale of mystery and murder. It just gets better with each installment of the series. I enjoyed a new character, a precocious young boy on the same cruise ship William and his wife were vacationing on. The mystery starts on the cruise.

This book could be read as a stand-alone, but I recommend you read the other books first for the background - it will make it more interesting. I find the behind the scenes views of the art world fascinating. Fast paced and entertaining.

Thanks to Harper 360 through Netgalley for an advance copy. This book will be published on October 19, 2021.

*A Tangled Web*

William Warwick now a DCI is in charge of an unsolved murder unit dealing with cold cases. This is to catch the criminals who think they got away with murder. In order to do so he has to think like a criminal.

William and his wife are having a rare holiday on a luxury liner at someone else’s expense when he comes across a rich family whose grandson is very much like a young William with a curious mind. When the unthinkable happens William finds himself investigating a tragedy…

In the background his arch nemesis Miles Faulkner an escaped convict was pronounced dead. Is it the end of the matter?

There are so many people who cannot be trusted as there are many on the payroll of an unscrupulous QC who loves to line his pockets. His number one client being Miles Faulkner.

It is a tangled web as William finds himself in the hot seat trying to figure out all the parts. William also finds himself trying to keep tabs on his ex-uncover policeman brought in to assist him as his second in command. He is not just any policeman he is ex military with a special set of skills but can he be tamed when he experiences a horrific personal tragedy, what will he do about it and can he fool William when he goes off the radar to exact revenge

I always enjoy Jeffrey Archer books and was steadily working my way through his novels when I was offered the opportunity to read book 4 in the William Warwick series. Having only previously read the first book and being a stickler for reading series in order quickly read books two and three prior to starting this one.

The thing with Archer novels are that the plots are always so well planned out. This one is no different and makes a very entertaining read.

In this fourth book in the series Detective Sergeant William Warwick is faced with a cold case and a suspect who has evaded arrest for far too long.

In London, the Metropolitan Police have set up a new Unsolved Murders Unit to catch the criminals nobody else can. Four victims. Four cases. All killers poised to strike again. In Geneva, millionaire art collector Miles Faulkner, convicted of forgery and theft was pronounced dead two months ago. So why is his unscrupulous lawyer still representing a dead client? And who is the mysterious man his widow is planning to marry?

Excellent storytelling a per usual make this series a very good cosy crime series.

I would like to thank both Netgalley and Harper Collins for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

This is the fourth in the Detective William Warwick series. I read the first one, but somehow missed #2 and #3!

I really liked the first one, but #4, not quite as much. Although it takes place in the 1980s, there was a kind of old fashioned quality to it that reminded me of a much earlier era. There was a well crafted plot and the story moved along at a fast pace. I did think the murder on the cruise ship a bit superfluous and some of the plot a bit over the top. Yet, it was an enjoyable read.

If you are looking for a fast, somewhat quaint police procedural, you might enjoy this.

Thank you to Harper Collins Australia for sending me a copy of this book to review.

I thought I would branch out and try a new crime author, and I am certainly glad I did. My father who has since passed away was a huge fan of Jeffreys books.

It was filled with lots of twists and turns and lots of different emotions surfaced.

Parts of it did seem over the top and I do feel like I should have read the other books in the series so I would have a better connection with the characters.

I now know why he has such a good reputation as an author. I will definately be looking at reading his other books.

Exited as I was over having been approved for ‘a new Archer’, I must admit I’m a little disappointed now. I’m not in the habit of copying blurb texts in my review, but this time I will.
“In London, the Metropolitan Police set up a new Unsolved Murders Unit—a cold case squad—to catch the criminals nobody else can.
In Geneva, millionaire art collector Miles Faulkner—convicted of forgery and theft—was pronounced dead two months ago. So why is his unscrupulous lawyer still representing a dead client?
On a luxury liner en route to New York, the battle for power at the heart of a wealthy dynasty is about to turn to murder.
And at the heart of all three investigations are Detective Chief Inspector William Warwick, rising star of the department, and ex-undercover agent Ross Hogan, brought in from the cold.
But can they catch the killers before it’s too late?
This sounds all wonderful and intruiging and Archer is still someone who knows how to captivate the reader, but I thought the whole book a little unbalanced. I don’t want to give away spoilers, but certain parts of the story seemed not to have anything to do with other parts. The timing looked a bit off because I expected certain parts of the story to be in other places, and there were sometimes too many repetitions of facts and figures and storylines.
Having said this, I was glad to meet William Warwick and his lovely wife Beth; this fourth book in the series can well be read as a stand alone. And I liked that the story is set in a time before everybody only relied on computers and telephones instead of their own imagination. I know it must be set somewhere after 1965 because a famous Stones song is mentioned, but for the rest the setting is almost ‘timeless’.

Thanks to Edelweiss for this review copy.

I’m definitely in the minority with my 2 star rating but this story fell flat for me and I could not connect with any of the characters. DNF at 30%. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my review.

I like reading/listening to the books by this author. This is the 20th book by this author that I've read.

He is a solid 4 stars for me. As I settle into one of his books, I know what I'm in for. His stories draw me right in because he has created great characters. They feel like people I'd want to know. The author infuses them with wit, charm, and humor.

I look forward to reading more. Given William's profession, there are ample opportunities for future stories to be written. So another solid 4 stars for one of Archer's books.

I most likely would have liked this book much more had I been British and perhaps read the first few in this series. Oddly, I usually never have problems getting into a series when starting it late. I typically enjoy the book and want to go back and read the earlier ones. Not so with this book.

For me, the writing was dull; the characters were primarily unlikeable, the ending abrupt (or is it a cliffhanger?), I felt that some plot points/storylines were left unfinished, and I just couldn't engage with any part of this book.

The only reason I am giving it three stars is that I'm sure fans of this author will love this addition to the series, and even those who like novels that are a bit on the historical side will enjoy this. Unfortunately, the story takes place in the mid-to-late '80s giving this book a very stuffy feel.

Detective William Warwick doesn’t believe criminal mastermind Miles Faulkner is dead even though he attended his funeral. He and his team have other cold murder cases to solve too. The book starts with Warwick and his wife on a holiday cruise just the right place to investigate a family murder. This section reads like a separate short story really. This was an easy read, it’s fast paced, the story isn’t too complicated and the resolutions of the various cases are well done. Enjoyable.

I haven’t read many books by the author in the past and this one was definitely a great surprise and fresh breath of air.
I loved the adrenaline that rushed through my veins while reading this story and while I didn’t knew most of the characters, I could easily distinguish them throughout the book.
It was interesting to see how the author will bring an end to this story when there were so many loose ends opened and I wasn’t disappointed at all in the end. Yes, the door is left wide open for the next instalment, but what I’ve read today it’s definitely a read that sold me the whole series.

Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy

When I read any book that I'm planning to review, I jot on a 3 x 5 lined pad notes of important characters and events to refresh my memory when I've finished. Well, for this book I ended up with nine pages - far exceeding my usual three or four. That should tell you that if you read this one, you'll need to pay close attention because there are a ton of characters and subplots that switch at the drop of a paragraph. That said, I found it to be quite enjoyable, and it stands alone well despite being the fourth in a series (coming from one who didn't read the first three).

The London Metro Police's Unsolved Murders Unit includes several top-notch investigators such as Detective William Warwick - basically the star of the series - and the more offbeat Ross Hogan, who recently was pulled in to help after some years as an undercover agent. They've got no shortage of cases, though at the top of the list is tracking down Miles Faulkner, a millionaire art collected who's gone afoul of the law. Problem is, he turned up dead a couple of months earlier, as attested to by officers who attended his funeral. Warwick, though, is convinced the death was faked - aided and abetted by his long-time and super-loyal attorney, Booth Watson. To help, Warwick turns to his museum-employed wife, Beth, who's an air-kissing friend of Faulkner's greedy ex-wife, Christina.

While the Warwicks are on a vacation cruise, the detective meets the grandson of a family business dynasty. The young kid hopes to emulate William and go into law enforcement, so they do a bit of bonding - especially after the iron-fisted grandfather turns up dead. Back in the office, other members of the team are trying to bring down a loan shark who doesn't take it lightly when borrowers can't pay up and a husband who may be trying to add his new wife to the list of former wives the team think he also murdered.

Each of these scenarios brings its own set of characters and locales and transition among them all isn't always clear (thus underscoring the caution I made earlier about the need to pay close attention). But the tension - and the team's moving their investigations along to a successful end - kept me reading and, I must say, warming up to Warwick and Hogan (emphasis on the latter) to the point of looking forward to their next adventure. Thanks to the publisher, via NetGalley, for introducing me to this series by way of a pre-release review copy. Well done!

Over My Dead Body is the fourth installment in the Detective Inspector William Warwick series. If you love family sagas with well developed characters, this Jeffrey Archer series is very satisfying. The mystery continues with unsolved murders, the art world, and detective work. This was a quick, entertaining read, and I can’t wait to see what Jeffrey Archer writes next!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

3.5 STARS - In this fourth installment of his Detective William Warwick series, Jeffrey Archer once again shows his readers why he's known for his detailed, compelling, and layered story lines. I had read the first book in this series years ago but remember very little of the characters and plot. Now I wish I had read books two and three because of larger story arcs and returning characters. Over My Dead Body could be read as a standalone but if you want to understand the whole picture in terms of plot and characters, I suggest starting at the beginning with Nothing Ventured.

The story kicks off with a murder on a NYC-bound ocean liner. I was quite enthralled with this plot which introduces readers to 17-year-old James Buchanan (who I can't help but think will make appearances in future books). One murder isn't enough for Warwick so readers are then whisked back to London when Warwick learns that his nemesis - millionaire art thief and collector Miles Faulkner who was presumed dead - may still be alive. A cat-and-mouse story ensues, and other cases are added to the docket stemming from Warwick's cold case squad at The Met.

There is a lengthy list of well-drawn characters - both friend and foe - and with the multiple cases, things get a bit confusing at times but through it all Warwick shines as the main character. I loved his banter with his Mrs. which added levity, but it was ex-undercover agent Ross Hogan who stole the show for me with his mad skills and penchant for not following the rules. Gotta love a good bad boy, right?

This was an interesting story and while the telling is a bit choppy as we jump from case to case, I think readers will enjoy this layered novel and its many different locales. Look for this book in stores October 19th in Canada!

Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this book for an honest review.

I haven't read a Jeffrey Archer book for a long time and I must admit that I have missed out. I quite enjoyed this book and will endeavour to read the 3 preceding titles. The writing is a little disjointed in parts but that could be formatting of a preview copy. Overall, an enjoyable book!
