Didn't See That Coming highlights the following topics: sexism and bullying.I can relate so much to the main character Kiki Siregar and we have one thing in common. We're both avid gamers. Jesse Q. Sutanto laid down facts about a girl gamer's experiences on sexism.
It's filled with threats such as rape, death, suicide etc., vulgar words and belittling women/girls because we are weak. This is very common in one of the multiplayer team fighting games like Mobile Legends, Farlight, Call of Duty, League of Legends, etc. Stereotypically, boys think that we only excel by picking the "easier" heroes like mage, marksman, support etc. Unfortunately, some of them are arrogant and sore losers. They can't handle when someone stepped on their egos when they refused to acknowledged a girl plays better than them.
The difference between Kiki and I are our perceptions. Kiki pretends to be a guy by having a username that identifies her as a male player and it makes her feel safe. In contrast, I proudly use my gamer username: Ladyvantassel / LadyVanGarrett -- I got these names from Sleepy Hollow and other players know I'm a girl. I'm not a pro player but I refuse to let my guard down on these whiny players. To be a leader, is to be a team player.
So when Kiki realizes that her game buddy: Sourdawg studies at Xingfa, she wonders who he is but she's also terrified someone will reveal her true identity. Anyways, this is going to be a lengthy review as I want to address the bullying part: it was a slap in the face to Jonas and Principal Lin. I believe Kiki and those who were bullied didn't get the justice they deserved. I am so furious with Jonas for being such a jerk, spoiled misogynist. Don't get me started with Principal Lin. Someone should replace his job for being biased and tolerating bullies. Obviously, favoritism is common in Asian schools.
This is a good contemporary romance. It will be better if it has an alternate ending or slightly extending the pages addressing properly the issues.. (view spoiler)[Jonas is expelled and when the issues circulated the social media tainting the reputation of Xingfa, the higher education government office takes an investigation to the issue. Principal Lin will be proven guilty of what's happening. Hence, he'll be fired from the office and a new female teacher takes over the school imposing rules that will create a safer space to everyone. (hide spoiler)]...more
I have conflicting thoughts about this novel / self-help / memoir. I don't want to be over critical because we all have different ways in coping. MentI have conflicting thoughts about this novel / self-help / memoir. I don't want to be over critical because we all have different ways in coping. Mental health is something not openly talked about. We get judged for what we're experiencing. Sometimes, we get invalidated and it's disappointing.
These opinions are my own and I don't mean to offend anyone. Truthfully speaking, this is just a transcript of the author's conversations with her psychiatrist. It was brave of her to share it because therapy sessions are sacred for me. They're confidential. I commend her for putting this into a book to enlighten readers to normalize seeking professional help without being labeled as "mentally unstable", "crazy" etc.
I am in the medical field and I can understand terms being discussed here. Some parts of this book are relatable to me but is it just me her psychiatrist isn't therapeutic at all? Or am I being oversensitive? I also wonder what medications she is taking. It wasn't mentioned (or is it unnecessary?). There are antidepressants, anxiolytic etc. can make you feel worse and probably needed a change of prescription.
Anyways, it was an okay book. I don't recommend it because you might get triggered with non-therapeutic communication here....more

He shares stories of triumphs and struggles in medical school and residency, his patient encounters and the lessons he learned throughout the years of experience.
Being a healthcare worker, I find this book relatable, emotional yet inspiring at the same time. No matter how hard it is to work in the medical field, the lives of our patient relies on our hands. Our daily patient interaction isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Many of them struggled financially and cannot afford hospitalization and treatments. Regardless of the situation, our duty is to give our best to heal and save their lives. We may not be immune to deaths but we must remain our composure and continue what we do.
The best lesson this book gave me is to be compassion and empathetic towards others. I had my fair share of frustration, failures and achievements but what keeps me going? Seeing the patients we took care of are doing well. That’s a reminder that I did great and I should keep doing what I love.
I am lucky to meet Dr. Ronnie Baticulon during the Manila International Book Fair and I got my book signed. Thank you for sharing your stories, Doc! Thank you also to Dr. Cheska for recommending this book to me. ...more

It's been years since I've read The Last Olympian and I never thought there'll be another book from this series. Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase and Grover return for another quest. Can you believe Percy and Annabeth are bound to college? I feel so OLD reading this book. Percy needs recommendation letters for his college application so he can be nearby Annabeth. He's offered three quests to finish and obtain these admission letters. One of those is to find the missing chalice of the gods
Ganymede, the cupbearer, lost the chalice of the gods and he seeks Percy's help to find the stolen cup and find out who the thief is. I miss the adventures of this trio. As always, Annabeth is an intelligent heroine and may I commend Grover for being such an amazing sidekick? HE DESERVES ALL THE PRAISE.
I am looking forward for the upcoming books for this series. You can read this even if you haven't read other Rick Riordan's series. ------------------------------------ AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, I AM EXCITED TO GET BACK IN THIS WORLD. I miss my teenage days binge reading the entire series. MY PERCABETH...more

Happy Place isn't just about a second chance romance, it also ventures about friendship, life, mental health and life lessons. Here, we follow an ex-couple Harriet Kilpatrick and Wyn Connor. They're friends turned into lovers and they had unresolved issues.
When one of their friends wanted a one last getaway in the summer place they usually go yearly, they have to pretend they're still together. With tensions rising, this reunion to be eventful. Will there be a chance they'll rekindle or is it over between them?
After months of reading slump, I was emotionally detached and impatient with Harriet and Wyn. I was dying to find out what went wrong. The second half of the book is a life saver as the story started to pick up. From there, Harriet's character resonated with me. One of my toxic traits is being a people pleaser. It was draining. Emotionally, physically, mentally and socially. There is one point I questioned myself:
What makes you happy?
Happy Place may not be my favorite Emily Henry book, one thing that makes it memorable is to remind me to never sacrifice my happiness just to make others happy. To chase my goals at my own time and stop seeking validation for their satisfaction. At the end of the day, prioritize yourself. Honestly, I'm proud how it ended because the protagonists handled things maturely....more

First of all, I waited for 2 frickin' years for this book and I didn't expect it's already a FINALE. I was invested with this series since I started it and I cannot stop raving how amazing it is. The plot, the characters, the twist and turns. It was THAT consistent. However, The Darkest Half ended abruptly. and it didn't meet my expectation. There's a lot to tell and for me, this is supposed to be my man, my favorite dark souled torturer Fredrik Gustavsson.
Here, Izabel and Niklas are on their own. Feeling betrayed of Viktor Faust's absence, they are in search of Vonnegut. Holy shit, that plot twist on Vonnegut almost gave me a heart attack. I wanted to drink tequila but I can't. I ALMOST FELT BETRAYED MAN. It was a happy ending. The couple who ended up together DESERVED IT. PERIOD.
I'm going to miss Viktor Faust, Fredrik Gustavsson, Niklas Fleischer, Izabel Seyfried, Nora Kessler and my unhinged swan, Seraphina Bragado. Unfortunately, this is my least favorite book in the series. ...more
