It's not so safe for a little girl to be wandering around the countryside by herself. I don't know if you noticed, but we got a bit of a zombie problem.
Born after the "zombie problem" began, fifteen-year-old Temple has spent her whole life struggling for survival. She is gutsy, and strong, and she's stayed breathing while others around her have fallen. Like many a young girl, she's got some wanderlust - places she'd like to see and visit. Plus, she's learned that one of the best ways keep yourself alive is to keep moving.
. . . I ain't got this far in my life just to get familied down inside an electric fence.
But, now Temple's been saddled with the care and feeding of a mute, and pretty defenseless grownup. And, after an evening spent inside a "gated community" leads to a deadly encounter, she's got a guy promising to hunt her down for the murder of his brother. It's a hell of a burden for a gal who just wants to see Niagara Falls.
This was a sure 'nuff page-turner, but there's much more to it than zombie thrills and post-apocalyptic descriptions. Bell is a fine writer; the zingy dialogue between Temple and Moses Todd is a joy to read. I'd recommend this book about the walking wounded, even to readers who're not fans of the walking dead.
