I am PERPETUALLY frustrated by V.E. Schwab for being so close to me in age and yet having published so many exceptional, completely VARIED novels. I swear, she's a witch. I would likely need 300 years, just like Addie, to do what this author has managed to do in her single lifetime.
I couldn't get enough of Addie's adventures, her steadfast approach to soldiering on despite her many miseries, and her delicate dance through life with Luc. I want so much more. I will be thinking about this book for a long time and insisting everyone I know read it....more

This was one of those books I'll be thinking about for a long time. It was escapism at its finest, particularly when I needed it most. Everything was so tight. I'm obsessed with every single character. The book was described as a "slytherin romance" and that couldn't have been more apt -- after reading so many books about "quirky, clumsy girls" who are "free thinkers" and "so unique" with so little to back that up *cough* the selection *cough* this book was such a breath of fresh air. The main character was a straight-up sociopath. The King was not a good guy, although deep down they both had plenty of room to grow, at least to make space for each other. This was not about two wholesome youths trying to save the corrupt kingdom from overbearing royalty, it was about two power hungry nobles just wanting more power, and accidentally finding love along the way.
There are a whole lot of "save the world", "be the revolution", "take down the man" kind of books out there, and I love those books for existing and I love what they do for the world. This is not one of those books.
Because sometimes, you just want to read about two Slytherins who get everything they want, who are forced to grow emotionally despite their best efforts to stop it, and who do so in a delishiously fast-paced and unputdownable book I will be recommending to everyone I know.
This book instantly made it on my top 10 books of all time, and I'm devastated it's just a standalone novel (though I commend the author for telling the story she meant to tell and nothing more)....more

It was such a unique story, and I really love books that delve into the "what if this happened to the world" realm without going full dystopian.
This book answers the question of what would happen if the earth's rotation slowed down. The changes come quickly, and I love how this book addressed the physical, environmental, social, political and personal impacts that would have both on the grand scale and for individuals.
I couldn't stop listening. I had to know what would happen. Who would survive.

I really enjoyed it, especially the small hints we got about a somewhat dystopian version of future America, while that was merely an undercurrent of the book. I love books that play with the space between fantasy and not. Was the curse real? Was it not?
The only reason I docked the book a star was because I was hoping for a little bit more out of the ending, or possibly a different one entirely. But I think Lorna had to grapple with never having what she wanted, so leaving me as the reader feeling that way too was actually pretty effective.
I need a bit more time to ponder this one. But I will say I've never read a book quite like it....more

But this book has SO MUCH GOING ON and it made me feel way more feels than I remembered, and it all really hit me in ways I hadnt expected.
I'm so glad Harry has Molly Weasley, and Hagrid, and so many other wonderful people in his life. I couldn't believe how real the argument between Dumbledore and Cornelius Fudge felt at the end, when Fudge refused to believe Voldemort was back. I had forgotten so many details about Winky's part in the book, and Rita Skeeter, and the overall delightfulness of Hermione's weird relationship with Victor.
I enjoyed this reread immensely. Favorite book so far of my adult reread of Harry Potter....more

It was a little confusing to figure out what was going on right away, but once the two stories start overlapping it all comes together in this beautiful and emotion way. I can't even explain it. I went in to this book with a healthy amount of skepticism (mostly an attitude like "but why does this book exist?") and I was TOTALLY put in my place. This book is perfect.
It's everything fanfic-loving adolescent Kristina ever wanted out of a book. It's everything that never would have happened in Harry Potter. It's delicious LGBT+ representative romance, it's sassy writing, it's delightful unbelievable and it took me RIGHT back to my fanfic days. And for all its impossible ridiculousness, it also somehow manages to be a surprisingly great book.
5 stars, 100%, would read again (and again and again and again). Simon + Baz forever. OTP. <3...more

I was really impressed with this volume, for how artfully it entwined so many different important elements. Was I laughing so hard my sides hurt? Yes. Was it also insightful, poignant, and real? Surprisingly, yes. I appreciate how honestly it tackles topics like depression, mental illness, sex-workers, relationships, etc. That's so important, especially in a setting that also manages to be hilarious and incredibly sex-positive at the same time. This is DEFINITELY a book for adults, but a really important one once you get past the fact that there's also an iron throne made out of dildos. And it is glorious. ...more

I really enjoyed the further character development in this one, pretty much across the board. I think Alana and Marco are some the best characters I have read in a long time, but even the side characters are incredibly complex and real. I am dying to know what happens, and need Volume 4 asap. ...more
