[image] ooooh, I want this Omg, I'm so glad it's finally over! This book was so long that I expected the epilogue to be us looking at their gravesites!
[image] ooooh, I want this tombstone! I like how it is filled in for the future death like it was made for a psychic or something who saw their gruesome death in a vision.
I mean, sheesh! The timeline of the story was decades. If it wasn't for the fact that I felt obligated to finish this book because I read it as part of a reading challenge, I would have dnf-ed this sucker when they were in college.
[image] See ya never!
But, oh no, it wasn't enough for us to suffer through years and years of these people's lives, there were also sad and tragic deaths. Please, just force me to stub my toe really hard instead of trying to make me cry. Because I did. Dammit! I cried over a fucking fictional character's death. That does not please me.
[image] stop that.
I'm not even going to review this thing. It was good, it was horrible, it was long. But, the best part is that it's over....more

However, after discussion with my friend, Emer, I realized that I shouldn't have been so forgiving because the messed-up part of things is really personal to many people. So, I've decided to change my rating out of respect for those women. You can read Emer's review here .
Original review:
First, I'm going to give you the warnings that I wish someone had given me, even though I should have read more reviews before reading. But, I'm lazy. Anyway, there is angst galore, the major problem in the book could have been cured by a conversation, and then something really bad happens. Nuff said.
The heroine is a girl that I could see really liking. She is snarky and fun, plus she has a mini dog named Stuntman Mike. So, I would even just like her for the dog.
The set-up is that a girl and guy are falling for each other, but she has issues so she continually rejects him over and over again for the entire book. There is so much angst that you might want to consider taking a valium just to not get too wrapped up in their shit. And, then comes the crying. For you. Yes, she cries a lot too, especially for someone who never says she cries. Also, she plays head games with the guy a lot after she said she doesn't do that.... Hmmm, so she's kind of a liar. But, the point is, this is one of those books that will make you cry. No, not me. I'm dead inside. But you. You might cry. I was just sad for a bit - which is as close as I get. Luckily, I have a cure for sadness. It's called alcohol. You should try that sometime. It works!
That sounds bad, right? But, I still enjoyed the book overall because there were a lot of funny moments and I liked all of the characters. The writing was good, and the dialogue was good too. See? Good.
[image] Yeah, you guys don't have to deal with that kind of stuff with me. Everything is good....more
Oh my gosh. Why did I do this to myself? Did I just think, "Hey, I haven't cried and felt miserable in a while. I should fix that." Or what?

YeaOh my gosh. Why did I do this to myself? Did I just think, "Hey, I haven't cried and felt miserable in a while. I should fix that." Or what?

Yeah, normal Jilly doesn't cry. If I'm really upset I'm more likely to spiral into a dark depression and retreat from everyone and everything. You know, like a well-adjusted person. But tears? No, not a thing. Yet, this book brought a few.
Maybe the old tear ducts need a good cleaning once in a while. It's probably healthy.
[image] Next time, this is how I'll clean them.
Anyway, read this one if you want to cry. Or, if you want to get really scared, because truthfully, all of the early signs of Alzheimer's are there for most of us. Forgetting words and using "thingy" in place? Check Forgetting where something is? Check Forgetting what I was looking for or why I came in that room? Check Forgetting to go running? Double and Triple Check. Okay, maybe not forgetting to run exactly, but I don't run. Is that a sign? Do I have it?
[image] Hypochondriac kitty shouldn't read this book.
To be honest, I didn't really like Alice all that much before she got diagnosed, but her descent into Early Onset Alzheimer's was brutal. Nobody should have to go through that. The story did a great job showing us the horror of losing your mind. And, scaring the ever-loving crap out of me.
In other words... Unless you really need to clean those tear ducts, or you know someone going through this and want understanding, you should probably stay away. Read something happy and funny instead.

WeLike most couples who meet at a bar, this couple is magic. And, bound to stay together forever. Okay, I admit it, I picked up met my hubs at a bar. We've been together for almost 30 years now, so I'm assuming that all meet-cute bar things are magic.
[image] Not that kind of magical! Although.... how much recover time is between these two times? just wondering...
Ivie and Silas meet at a bar and fall in love almost immediately. Yeah, insta-love, but that's what we get in novellas. It didn't matter, though, because this couple is awesome. They had a bit of the opposites attract thing going. He's rich, she's poor. He's handsome, she's plain. He lives in a mansion with servants, she lives in dumpy apartment and has a biker father. He's cultured, she can burp the alphabet (I'm assuming). A perfect match!
[image] Yes. This is another couple that I approve of. That bird looks thrilled to be the kids' new pet. I'm sure the kid totally didn't squish it with his giant ape-like hand. No, really, what the hell kid? They been feeding you growth hormones at the farm? Or, is it from all of the hay baling?
Our couple has a very limited time schedule, and not just because their story has been reduced to a mini-book. Like, thanks a lot JRW! Give tons of time to the nightmare that was Xcor and Layla, but make the adorable couple - you know, the ones who aren't an ugly bad guy and idiot boring chick- have to live out their romance in the time it takes for us to read it while waiting for our Stouffer's frozen lasagna to cook. Seriously, two hours to cook a frozen meal for the fam? I might have actually had time to make something from real ingredients in that time rather than sit on my ass and read for two hours while the hot box did its very slow magic. But, what I lack in cooking skills I make up for in presentation.
[image] Fancy shmancy, huh?
How the hell else am I supposed to get all of this reading done? Gotta cut corners somewhere. There's only so much Jilly to go around. You're welcome.
Anyhoo, so the couple is awesome, but beware, the feels will get ya. Even though I had a pretty strong idea of where things were going - because, let's face it, a moron would catch the clues - it was still a very emotional story. I'm guessing that normal humans would have laughed, cried, and rejoiced while reading this. Normal humans like me, you know, cuz I'm totally one of you. Really. Super normal.
My friends who love all of the emotions will love this book. It runs you through the emotional roller coaster.
[image] Not me, personally. But, it will My friends who love all of the emotions will love this book. It runs you through the emotional roller coaster.

First, I wasn't too fond of Eleanor. She comes off as super judgmental and rude.
I have often noticed that people who routinely wear sportswear are the least likely sort to participate in athletic activity. Okay, that's true. But still, rude!
But, then I realized that she truly had no idea that she was offensive. I figured she must have Asperger's because she truly couldn't read other people at all.
When a bartender hands her a bottle of cider and a glass: What's the empty glass for?”
"It's for the (cider)" he said.
"Am I expected to pour the drink from the bottle to the glass? Isn't it your job to do that?" Okay, she still sounds incredibly rude and jerky, but she truly had NO idea and wondered why the bartender was suddenly not as friendly as he had been.
[image] That must be it.
Here's when she gives a guy a birthday gift of 1/2 a bottle of vodka and some cheese slices because "men like cheese":
I gave him his birthday present, which he seemed to find genuinely surprising. He looked at each item in turn with an expression that I found hard to read, but I quickly eliminated “boredom” and “indifference.” Okay, that was hilarious. But, still. She had no idea.
So, we are going through her strange, sad life with her and reading clues in her narration about what the hell is wrong with this lady. And, it's tragic.
But, the good news is that she actually makes a friend. That's gotta be a good thing, right?
[image] Well, maybe not, but friends are good.
Here's her reply to her new work-friend's lunch conversation about how she lived alone:
“You get used to being on your own,” I said. “Actually, it really is much better than being punched in the face or raped.” Raymond choked on his pint, and took a moment to recover. Okay, she needs to work on her small talk.
The story was funny, sad, depressing, and hopeful. All of those things that make the We Love Feelings crowd happy in a book. I still enjoyed it, even though I am definitely NOT in that club. The only thing that I didn't care for was the little twist/surprise at the end. I thought it was unnecessary and the book would have been much better without it. I understand that authors feel the pressure to do the Gone Girl type of thing, but it just didn't need it.
[image] Some unexpected twists are just mean.
Other than that, I think it is a book worth reading. ...more

And, in this third book, he decides that he needs to find his sister before the end so they can die together.
I gotta say, there aren't a lot of happy feels going on in these books, but the writing is brilliant. It's thought-provoking and deeply philosophical, but ouch! You need to read it, but then have something happy and funny to read afterwards....more

I went into this book blind because I read a review that suggested that. I didn't even read the blurb about the story. So, I had no idea where it was heading. But, after reading the blurb now, I think you will still not really know where it is heading unless you read a bunch of reviews. I personally would probably have avoided the book if I knew. It's not that I have any life experience about this subject, it's just that I usually avoid things with too many feels. Not my thing. But, I am glad I read it. Kind of. It was a captivating story.
The only thing I would warn people about is that this could be a painful trigger for some people, so if you want to know the subject matter open my spoiler.

The author sucks you in wiThis book was so cute and funny, but also devious. That's right, it gave me feelings and you know I'm against having those. The author sucks you in with the funny and charming antics of Dylan, the straight guy, pretending to be the boyfriend of Alec, the gay man with a broken heart, in order to fool Alec's ex. Dylan is determined to make Alec's ex believe they are together and it makes him angry that the ex thinks they are lying.
"I'm not letting that asshole call me a liar and get away with it."
"But you were lying," Alec said.
"Hah." Dylan pointed his bottle at Alec. "But he can't prove that, now can he?"
[image] stupid self-righteous truthers..
As is usually the case in trying to prove you're not lying when you are in fact a dirty liar, now Dylan and Alec must do a lot of work to prove that the lie is not a lie. And, that right there is why I tell the truth. I would rather offend someone with my truth than to have to do the work of lying. It's much easier for me which is really the most important thing.
[image] and I'm lazy..
So, Dylan and Alec become friends in order to convince someone that they are lovers. And, we all know that a straight guy becoming a friend of a gay guy will make him gay, right? That's been scientifically proven according to homophobic straight men's brains.
[image] what are you trying to say?
Okay, okay. I'll let that pass because their friendship to romance is pretty adorable. And, Dylan wasn't as straight as he thought he was. And, he did have a gay best friend in his youth, which I loved. So...
[image] this time...
So, everything is going swimmingly well until the author decides to hit me with the feels. How dare you, sir?! Ugh, it was a tough one. You see, Dylan's best friend from his youth died of AIDS and Dylan is still really broken over it. There is a flashback of him at his friend's hospital bedside that really got to me. I needed to go quickly chop some onions in order to allow for my teary eyes. But, I don't know if it will get to others as much as it did me, although it was sad no matter what, because it hit me in a personal way. My brother died of AIDS a couple of years ago so this targeted my heart. I remember many days of sitting by his hospital bed. And, just recently I lost my dad to cancer and the last day at his hospital bed is still fresh too.
[image] Thanks a lot, book!
Still, in spite of the feels, this book is totally fun and worth it if you like the m/m romance genre.

The story was about Grant, a guy who retired from his shipping business because the FBI was investigating him, and Morgan, an autistic busboy who is also an artist.
Grant moves to Morgan's small town in order to get the heat of the law off of him and meets Morgan one night at the town's bar. He thinks Morgan is mentally disabled, so he tries to help him when some people are giving him a hard time. He also finds him attractive, but feels like he is wrong to be attracted to someone who is "slow".
But, Morgan is anything but "slow". He messes with Grant by telling him a bunch of stories and then tells him that he can do the toothpick trick from Rainman with hilarious results. He tells Grant to take some toothpicks out of a new box, then to dump the rest on the floor and he'll count them really fast. Grant does this and then he waits for Morgan to count them. And waits. And waits.
"All right, how many?"
"Fuck if I know, but you better start cleaning up the mess you made. I've got somewhere to be."
Lol! Later, Grant meets Morgan's Aunt Jenny.
"You fell for the toothpick thing, didn't you?"
If my face burned any hotter, I was going to catch fire. "Yeah."
"Don't worry." She patted me on the shoulder. "Everyone does."
Eventually Grant realizes that there is nothing wrong with Morgan at all. He is different, but he also sees the world in a beautiful way. They get involved in a relationship.
Now, comes the fantasy part of the book because Grant and Morgan are a gay couple in a very small town in the middle of nowhere. This small town all support them and love to see them showing their affection for each other. Even old farmer men in overalls are all supportive. I want to know where this town is? Because, even though we lived in Los Angeles, my brother didn't find such support for his homosexuality. We never considered that he would have been better accepted in some podunk town in Nowheresville. We could have moved to this wonderful place.
[image] And, the wild unicorns frolic in the fields there.
But, I didn't mind this little jump away from reality because the story was just so magical. I guess it makes sense that the town would be magical too.

Okay, here's my caveat. This book is a male/male romance with lots of unrealistic sex. If you like that genre, you will LOVE this book.

Along with an impI've never actually watched one of those Lifetime movies that are dramatic and sappy, but I imagine that this is what they are like. Along with an improbable romance, there are kidnappings, suicide attempts, bar fights, abusive men, murders, and alien babies. (okay, maybe not the alien babies. Too bad because that would have been awesome! oh, oh, how about alien twin babies and one of them is an evil twin? Yes! I love evil twins!)
This book is about Nina, an American girl who has spent most of her life in England and is engaged to a boring guy who doesn't care about her, and Max, an alpha Colorado mountain man who owns the cabin that Nina rented to get away from it all and decide if she really wants to marry Mr. Boring Dud. (I'm guessing "no".)
Nina shows up at her rental cabin and finds out that there was a mistake and the owner, Max, is at home. He's a dick, she leaves, and promptly crashes her car into a ditch. Thanks a lot for making us women drivers look bad, Nina!!
[image] I bet she makes a great sandwich, though...
Max saves her, and immediately she gets sick, so he keeps her at the cabin and nurses her back to health.
Okay, that's really sweet, BUT, he also decides to undress her - including her bra, while she is asleep, to help. Ummm, dude, are you a nurse? Is my bra being on life-threatening? No? Then, hands-off motherfucker! No verbal consent means no touchy the goodies!
Interestingly enough, Max has many young female friends that he considers like sisters to him. Why didn't he call one of them over to undress a woman he doesn't know who is definitely wearing an engagement ring? Hmmmm, good question. I don't want to call him Chester the Molester or anything, but... well, I just did. I can live with myself.
Max must have liked the merchandise that he so creepily leered at while Nina was unconscious because when she is well, he tells her that he has taken the keys to her rental car and will not allow her to leave. He also called the only taxi service in town and told them not to pick her up if she called for help a ride. And, as I mentioned, this cabin is in a remote area of the woods....
[image] Director: this is the perfect setting for a cutesy rom-com!
Isn't this romantic? Don't answer that. Because, you see, Max is hot, so this is all good. If he were old or ugly, this would be horrible and terrifying. But, he's hot. So,,,,, you know. It's cute and sweet - not a felony kidnapping and sexual molestation charge.
Okay, but this is Kristen Ashley. All of her books have this kind of thing going on. It's fiction. I just have to keep reminding myself of this and then I can enjoy her books. Because, the woman sure does write some great characters, funny dialogue, and hilarious situations. If you can get past the almost criminally pushy main male characters, you will have a blast reading her books.
Will I keep reading her books? Probably. Will I keep complaining about the overbearing alpha males that she writes? Definitely. What can I say? I apparently like to complain. Who knew? (Don't answer that!)...more

I actually had salty discharge coming from my eyes at one point. What is the meaning of this sorcery? I was very much calling myself a little bitch for crying, but crying did happen. And, since I rarely cry, I got a headache. *sigh*
It wasn't pretty. [image]
But, after a wine and Percocet cocktail, I'm feeling just fine now.

Let me just say that if you haven't read the series up to this point, you might want to look away now.
You were warned. Okay, so we have the sucking black holes that are going to suck our planet into oblivion. That's gunna suck. Cuz, we all gonna die. So, Mac & the Gang (anyone else think that would be an awesome name for an '80's tribute band?) need to figure out how to stop these suckers.
[image] I usually don't.
Unfortunately, Mac is now the Sinsar Dubh. Or, it is her. Oh, and it's so evil that it's freaking hilarious. Oh S.D. gets right down to the horrific killing right away. It doesn't even start small, like most serial killers with the bug torture and the pet-killing. No, it gets down to business and takes out a main character in the most disgusting, bloodiest way possible.
[image] Whatever you are imagining, this is worse.
We also get the release of Cruse/V'lane. I've always liked that guy. He is also pretty ambiguous when it comes to the rules of right and wrong. And, unfortunately for humanity, they need him. That's gonna be a problem. He's not exactly super-hero material.
[image] Oh, I stand corrected.
As for Dani/Jada, well, let's remember that in our last episode she had just hopped the fence from Unstableville straight in the PsychoTown. But, don't worry, she still has the Pedo-twins, Ryo and Christian, wanting her. The hot/crazy scale is mightily tested. And yet, since they had shown their propensity for a 14-yr old Dani, maybe the whole thing needs to be on more of a sliding scale for this group.
[image] In case you are unfamiliar. Dani must be on fire! (Or was that Ryo? Oops, too soon?)
But, Christian seems to be off the table, and instead we have a triangle with Dani/Ryo/Dancer. You all know that I have always been a Dancer fan. He has that geeky sex appeal and was actually the only one age appropriate for Dani. And, he was actually a decent guy to her - unlike some pedo-creep that won't be named. Just kidding. It's Ryodan. I never could get on that creepy ship. Ew.
Commence the onion chopping now!
As for the things that weren't perfect:
Yes, there was too much "thinkin'", musing, rambling... But, hey, I feel like KMM wanted to catch us in the feels. And, you will really get into their heads. So, achieved!
The changing of Ryodan's personality. WTH? Suddenly he is the philanthropist? The martyr for humanity? Mr. Nice Guy? Um, no. He's an ass. He was always an ass. He needs to continue his assish ways. Own it, man. I felt like this was just a way for us to be okay with a future relationship. And, oh, let's make sure all of the "impediments" are cleared too. This made me a bit killy. I freaking liked the impediment! *Urge to kill rising*
Okay, time for another cocktail. Enjoy reading this. It has some ups and downs, but it is still a great end to our beloved series.
Although, would it have killed her to write an epilogue? FFS
I've been waiting for this book forever. I read a lot of crappy books to get to this point, and it didn't disappoint me at all. Yes, I know that Ash'sI've been waiting for this book forever. I read a lot of crappy books to get to this point, and it didn't disappoint me at all. Yes, I know that Ash's human life was horrible, but I had so many people warn me about how abused he was that I was ready. I even had onions handy to cut if I needed them. But, being emotionally dead inside pays off because I didn't need to cut those onions at all. To bad, too, because our dinner tonight needed chopped onions, but I don't think so. Haha, onions, I win this round - again!!
So, this is a beast of a book. Really, there are two books - Ash's human life story, and then a normal Dark Hunter, paranormal romance novel. Part one was just horror after horror. Abuses suffered over and over again by this poor guy. And, even though he had a sister who loved him, she actually brought him more abuse every time she tried to "help" him. Really, she almost killed him many times with her "help".
But, the good thing about the first part of the book is that you are so dying for Ash to find someone and get his HEA that the second half of the book is rainbows and sunshine.
Ash meets Tori, who doesn't like him at first. He isn't used to women not wanting to sleep with him because of his curse, so he finds her intriguing. See that, girls? They always want what they can't have. Make him work hard for it, Ladies!
Now, Ash is total sex-on-a-stick dressed as Mr. Goth dude, and Tori is an awkward intellectual. The awesome thing is that Tori learns to love Ash for things other than his looks. He has this tough exterior, but is a caring, generous guy. Plus, he doesn't expect anything from anyone because he is so used to being treated like dirt. He's been abused by Artemis for 11,000 years. That's got to be a little exhausting.
So, when Tori treats him like a worthwhile person, and doesn't betray him, it's like she's the goddess. It is pretty adorable.
The only problem with this romance is that I want Ash for myself, so... .sorry Tori. It's the first time I found a book boyfriend who is older than me - by a tiny bit. So, he's mine, and I'm ready to have a chick-fight for him.
[image] ok, what the hell is going on in this picture?

This book actually made me almost cry. That is truly a feat because I don't even usually get close to tears unless I'm cutting onions. And, yet I only gave it a three star rating because I would say I didn't care for the main story too much, but fell in love with the relationship between the main characters. So, I figured it deserved a middle rating for my love/hate relationship with this book.
This story is set 20 years after the zombie apocalypse through the eyes of three 20-something bloggers. Blogs are where people get their news now because people have basically had to retreat to living in isolation and fear since the zombies are always a huge threat. Everyone carries the virus that makes them turn into zombies upon death, and there is always the chance that the virus will spontaneously take over and someone will just turn zombie at any time. So, large crowds, or small crowds, are things of the past. It isn't safe to be around a group of people anymore.
Our bloggers are Georgia - our main narrator, Shaun - her brother and bff, and Buffy - their friend and colleague. They run a blogging news site and have been picked to follow a presidential candidate as part of his team while he makes the run for office. It is a big opportunity for them to make a name for themselves. We have their adventure told to us through blog entries and Georgia's narration.
The thing is, we get a LOT of info-dumping. We learn extensively how the virus of zombism came to be, how it works, and statistics like crazy, and then we learn more about journalism than I've ever wanted to know. On top of that, since they are following a presidential candidate around, we also get tons of political talk. I just found all of that really boring. Really boring.... I almost DNFed the book a couple of times because of it.
But, I didn't DNF because of the relationship between Georgia and Shaun - the brother and sister. They had the sweetest sibling relationship that I have ever read in a book. Often, in books, we get sisters who are super close, or brothers, and often twins, but we rarely get a brother/sister relationship that is as close as same sex siblings. And, since I had such an amazingly close relationship with my own brother, it was awesome to read about one. My brother and I were best friends, and sometimes people acted like that was weird, but it was awesome to have that. As I have mentioned before, he died a couple of years ago of AIDS, and I was the one who inherited everything he had. It was bittersweet to find a necklace that had an angel stamped into it with my name on it that he carried around as a good-luck charm, but that was how we felt about each other. I felt like the relationship between Georgia and Shaun captured the closeness, protectiveness, and friendship that siblings can have. And, I really related to them - Georgia, negative and practical, and Shaun, gregarious and protective. I remember when we were little and moved to a new home and my brother went up to some girls my age and asked them if they would be my new friends. ;-) And, I was the one who took him to his doctor's appointments when he was at his sickest.
Georgia:Maybe it's geeky for a girl my age to admit she still loves her brother. I don't care. I love him, and one day I'll bury him, and until then, I'm going to be grateful that I'm allowed to watch him talk.
So, this relationship made this book for me. It was special.... and then.... let the crying begin...

You think: that's bad, but still - I can replant and it will all be okay. But, then the animal eats the flowers you love and then it pees and craps over where your flowers were. You are left with a big mess of crap and you realize: I can't fix this. It's just a steaming pile of shit now. What the hell happened to my flowers?... And, that's this book.
