Although the abrupt ending frustrated me, the rest of the book was so soothing. This is probably due to the fact it was written in letters to loved ones and not the subject matter itself, as it focuses heavily on the atrocities of WWII. Also, it's a book about books! Nothing makes me happier than reading a book about why reading is wonderful.
I read this because I watched and loved the Netflix adaptation (yes, I'm that monster who sometimes watches adaptations before reading the source material). I think I may have liked the movie slightly more, not that this was bad or anything. So if you liked the book, I recommend the movie and vice versa!

"I watched the Netflix adaptation and loved it (*gasp* BEFORE reading the book? Yup, I'm a monster), so now it's time to read the novel! I absolutely love reading about people who love reading, so this seems right up my alley."

I felt the same way. Loved the movie a bit more more then the book. Wish the book wasn’t written letters.
I’ve just finished watching the movie and I decided to see if it was a book. I am so happy it is and it was a pleasant surprise to find you have read it only 15 days ago!
I guess I'm the opposite, while I agree the ending was rushed and the romance was rushed, I liked the book more.
You’re not a monster! :) One of the stated goals of Masterpiece Theater and the BBC is to intice the viewer into reading the sourcebook of their literary dramatizations. In my case, they hav3 been wildly successful! I have followed up viewings of countless series by reading the books they are based on. This is a worthy goal, in my opinion!
I share your feeling of frustration with the ending falling short compared to the rest pf the story. They don’t even mention Sophie being the maid of honor or being in the wedding at all?! What’s up with that?! The ending was rushed. Nonetheless I absolutely loved the story.
Just finished both the book (first) and then the movie. The movie took a few liberties with the storyline... and I liked the book much better! The book shared much more of the detail history of the occupation... details that I barely mentioned (if at all) in the movie. It was a bit disappointing that the movie focuses more on the romance...
Just finished this and loved it so much that I thought I couldn't risk spoiling it by watching the film. Might change my mind now :-)
Omg! Have you read The Book Thief?! By Marcus Zusak! Another incredible WW2 story about the love of reading and the power of words. I highly recommend!
Annie Barrows is Mary Anne Shaffer's niece and she finished the book after her aunt passed away. I think that she probably had a slightly different vision of the story than her aunt's as the second half lets a lot of the side characters' voices fade to the background.
