A well written sentence in a book I'm reading can inspire me to get on the computer and dash off a few hundred words. My dreams are always a fruitful place for inspiration. Sometimes a mild writer's block can be broken by a twenty minute doze. I so often rise from a nap and go AH HA...that's where we are going. I remember I once wrote a short story after seeing a woman in a wedding dress pushing a baby carriage up a hill in San Francisco. Inspiration to write can come from anywhere. I just have to stay aware of everything that goes on around me and log it away. Something I noticed ten years ago could be a perfect segment in a story today. (less)

Still plugging away at the novel and have written several short stories. Gravelight moved from Delaware to LA and once they are settled we'll start working on the classic horror series.

Jeffrey Keeten Christopher wrote: "Jeffrey, didn’t you say you were going into publishing a while back? How is that going? Or am I misremembering?"

I'm working with Gravelight Press to put out 13 classic horror books with new intros starting to 2023. I'm also working on a novel and some short stories. I've written about 75% of the novel. I hope to finish a rough this summer. Gardening has been getting in the way of writing recently. :-) Thanks for asking Christopher!

Hey John, I'm using this window of time, when publishers aren't sending me books, to catch up on the backlog of books I already have waiting. I know it is hard to explain to writers the number of books I get sent a year not to mention the books that I really want to read. What I would do if I were you is find some reviewers that aren't as busy as I am. I'm sure you have written some fantastic books and I hope they find the audience they deserve.

message 121: by Akemi

Akemi G. Hi, I was looking at my piles of books that I've accumulated thinking I'd read one day, and noticed something: they are all foreign books translated into English, and many are classics. I'm not against world lit, but aren't there any interesting books originally written in English and recently published?

You're my most well-read GR friend, so can you help me with some recs? I'm interested in books that are:
* Written in English originally (not translation)
* Published, say, after 1950.
* Most interested in novels of about 50k-120k words (maybe 180-400 pages). Not that I don't read short stories or longer sagas, but I find this is a good length. And let's talk about novels, not plays, of now.
* As long as it tells a good story, I like it, although my fav is love stories (NOT romances). It's surprisingly hard to find excellent love stories, that are not shallow, not boring, not predictable.
* NO horrors, dystopian, and probably not mysteries (although I used to love Christie.)

I'd really appreciate your suggestions. ^_^
