Loved the book and the writing but there was something about it that I passionately disliked as well.
I can’t explain it as I myself don’t understand it but it definitely hindered my enjoyment to the full.

I was also somewhat take aback by my sheer dislike for Sayuri. I feel like I’m the only one who actively disliked her to this extent but there were moments where I felt so infuriated by her, by her selfishness, her utter lack of loyalty, her self-importance... I just couldn’t stand her.

Michel Avenali This is one of my personal classic favorites. There's something about it I think I will always love.

Prashasti Ay Nani, happy reading :D

It’s consumed the better part of my day. I’m loving it.

Thanks, Michel! Hope you’re enjoying your reads too. 😁

Anula I absolutely love this book. Unfortunately the movie didn't live up to the written word, but still a great effort and worth watching after you read it.

True. The adaptation was simply atrocious in my opinion.

Piya It was a 3 star read for me so I get it . There is something that just didn't click with me too :)

Whitney This was my favorite book for a really long time. I disagree that the movie adaptation wasn’t good. The cinematography is gorgeous and I think the story is faithful to the book. But the last time I reread this, I was taken aback by things I had never noticed before reading this during my teenage years (mind you, I’ve read it so many times I had to fix the cover with packing tape to make it readable. It was falling apart 😂) And one of them was how selfish Sayuri is. I found myself questioning if she’s really morally better than Hatsumomo at times.

The writing is great, but I agree there’s something about it as an adult that makes you question the book.

Maia Maybe I should reread it, it's been such a long time and I've changed a lot since the last time I read it, maybe I will see it differently :)

yes, exactly. I just can't trace it.

Completely! at times I was actually beyond astounded by the things she'd say or do... I just...i really dislike her!

if you love it, I say keep the good memories😆. But yeah, some re-reads make you love the book even more and other just make you think... how did I not notice that!? lol

Huda Alexander I liked it in the beginning but the more I read the main character annoyed me. Also some things just seemed ridiculous. I hated her obsession with the chairman. She was like a child sometimes. I couldn’t understand why she couldn’t have a normal crush.
