MJ Murray is a California-based writer whose first book, Detective Dylan and the Case of the Missing Mail, is available online wherever books are sold. She is often found with a dog in her lap, even though she tells people she isn't an animal person.
This was a very enjoyable book! Young readers who are learning to read in small chapters will love this story about Dylan and his little sister Emily. They are going to baseball practice and when they arrive, their coach explains that all the bases have been stolen. Dylan thought to grab his Youth Sleuth kit prior to leaving home so he and Emily are on the lookout for the stolen bases. They come across various groups of people in the park before finally locating the missing bases.
A super fun, adventurous book that features Theodore, who is Dylan and Emily's dog. He's also a part of their sleuthing team! It's short enough to keep the attention of an emerging reader and would also make a great bedtime story!
Dylan and his gang are back with their detective hats on when they find the plates missing when wanting to play baseball. Unravelling the mystery and piecing together the puzzle is what they do. But what happens when those pesky pirates get involved? This is a children’s chapter book with an easy-to-read format. It is not only interesting, but it is educational as well. Children will delight in this adventure and helping solve the mystery of the missing plates. Detective Dylan and the Hunt for Home Plate is a short and sweet read, and full of adventure, for children, around the ages of 5 to 10. It is a book in the Youth Sleuths series and this story is lots of fun. Let the adventure begin.
Detective Dylan and the Hunt For Home Plate is the second book in A Youth Sleuths Chapter Book Series by M.J. Murray. This is a children’s chapter book story with a bit of a mystery, crime and investigation elements, lessons/Learning, family, friendships, and more. This engaging tale inspires problem solving- including math's activities, expanding vocabulary, promoting fluency & comprehension, and more. As with the first book, this has an easy to read and understand plot which captures the imagination by engaging the reader with a fun story that contains some ‘learning’ opportunities along the way. There are also some fun (black and white) illustrations sprinkled throughout that help fuel the imagination- but would have been even more impactful and engaging if they had been in colour. Detective Dylan, his sister Emily, and trusty dog Theodore take on another ‘case’ when the bases from the baseball field go missing. What happened to them? Will Dylan and co get to the bottom of the mystery to find what happened to the bases? This is well worth the read to find out and makes for a fun read. This is aimed at children 5 – 9 who are perhaps just starting to read ‘chapter books’ on their own, or with help- so the story contains a few ‘harder’ words to challenge them as they read (Reading Tier 2). Happy Reading…
This is such a cute chapter book for young readers! This book finds Dylan (Detective Dylan, that is) and his sister, Emily, heading to the park for baseball practice with their dog, Theodore. This is Emily's first time attending a practice because she's just now old enough to attend. She has a little apprehension about practice because she's afraid she might not be any good at it, but Dylan assures her that no one expects her to be good and that she will get better with practice. They are all set to practice when they realize they're missing some very important pieces of the game! Home plate and all of the bases are missing! Coach said that the bases had been there when he arrived at the park, so surely, they couldn't have gone too far. Dylan, Emily and Theodore set out to find the missing bases along with the help of his new detective kit. They discover some candy wrappers near the missing bases and save that as a clue. They travel around the whole park searching, and eventually they discover where the bases must have ended up. Once the bases are retrieved, they are finally able to practice, and with Emily's new-found pride at helping solve the problem, she forgets all about being worried about the practice!

I really enjoyed this adventure and mystery....such a fun read. I am looking forward to more adventures and mysteries to solve with Detective Dylan, Emily and Theodore the dog!
Detective Dylan and the Hunt for Home Plate is the 2nd book in the Youth Sleuths series, but the first one I ready. Dylan has recently gotten his junior detective kit, and is ready to solve another mystery. He shows up for baseball practice, and discovers someone stole the bases! He and his sister Emily, and their dog set out to solve the mystery of the missing bases! Dylan is a really good big brother to Emily. Not sure the ages, but old enough to explore and go to the park on their own with their dog. The bullies of the book are 4th graders, so i imagine younger than that. The book has underlying lessons for the readers, when Emily learns she can do new things, as long as she doesn't give up. It is a cute beginner chapter book. There are 10 short chapters, making it good for middle to late elementary school. My 2nd grader didn't have enough attention span, but I enjoyed it. The accompanying illustrations are good and assist the story- helping new readers visualize the characters and the events.
Detective Dylan, Emily and Theodore the family dog are back at it. They never leave home without Dylan’s Detective Kit. But this time they are off to play baseball. Once they get to the ball field they notice the baseball plates are missing. So they go in search of the missing plates. First off let me put out there that this story is not only educational but brings together siblings. Yes this big brother enjoys spending time with his little sister. As for Emily she is a big help as the team works together. This author has done quite nicely in bringing these siblings together. This story is quite the page turner. It is captivating and interesting. The characters also play big parts in the story. They set a great example to our young readers. Also at the end of this chapter book there is a list of big words with explanations of the words and where to find them in the story. I love that! I love an open-ended story. This one is fantastic.
This book sees the return of Detective Dylan, his sister Emily and dog Theodore and this time, they are off to the local park to practice playing ball, it is a Saturday and a lot of the local kids go there to practice, however, when they get there, the coach can't find the home plate and without this and the other plates, they can't practice.
Fortunately, Dylan has brought his detective kit from the Youth Sleuths and so Dylan, Emily and Theodore head out into the park to investigate where the plate has gone and who had taken it, but as with all investigations, the answer is not as straightforward as it seems.
Will the trio be able to fund the plates and save the day, or will practice just have to be postponed until they are returned another day? This is a wonderful way to show the importance of communities, collaboration, fun and of course, investigating where you will follow along on the hunt and discover lots of other things along the way.
As they search for clues, Dylan’s detective skills are put to the test. With the help of Emily’s keen eye and Theodore’s impressive sniffing abilities, they follow each lead, unraveling the mystery one step at a time. Along the way, they meet a colorful cast of characters, each with their own motives and secrets.
MJ Murray’s writing is engaging and fast-paced, keeping young readers on the edge of their seats as Dylan and his team race against the clock to find the missing bases. The story is filled with clever twists and turns that will keep readers guessing until the very end.
The characters, particularly Dylan, Emily, and Theodore, are endearing and relatable. Readers will root for this dynamic trio as they work together to solve the case. The bond between Dylan and his sister is heartwarming, showing that teamwork and perseverance can conquer any challenge.
I have read a few books from this author with my son and they are always so good. This is the second book of the youth Sleuths chapter books. I would read the first book before you read this one so you get the back story of the characters. My son and I were so excited to read this one we stayed up and read it in one night. You can’t help but fall in love with these characters. I can’t wait to read the book in this awesome series.
Dylan and his little sister Emily don’t go anywhere without thinking they could find a new mystery. They also have to bring their best partner Theodore which is the dog. They are so excited to practice some baseball together but when they get there all the bases are gone. Will they be able to find out who stolen the bases or will it be a mystery they can’t solve?
Detective Dylan and the Hunt for Home Plate is the second book in the Youth Sleuths Chapter Book Series. Dylan and his little sister Emily are off on another adventure as they set out to solve their latest mystery. When they arrive at the baseball field, they discover that someone stole all the bases. Dylan, Emily, and their trusty sidekick dog, Theodore set off with Dylan’s detective kit to find out where the bases went and who stole them. As they follow the trail of clues and interview potential suspects, they learn about problem solving, family, friendship, and teamwork. This was an entertaining and engaging book that is full of mystery, adventure, playground pirates, and fun. The characters are endearing and the bond between Dylan and his little sister Emily is heartwarming. As a bonus, the author includes a list of words and exercises at the end of the book.
Another fun and cute story of brother and sister detective duo, Dylan and Emily. This time the siblings are trying to find out whole took the bases from the baseball field, they walk around to many different people and families doing many different activities in search of clues to where the bases could have gone. They run into kids being pirates in a fort, a girl crying about her birthday party theme, a family reunion, a yoga class, all in their pursuit of getting to the sandbox to question the Benny brothers about the bases. I feel like most of the time they are chasing around Theodore, he’s my favorite character. I like that Emily solved this one and was so excited that she forgets how nervous she is about practicing baseball. Her and Dylan work well together in solving these mysteries.
This was a cute addition to the Youth Sleuths Chapter Books series! You don’t have to read these in any order at all. My youngest is 8 years old and these chapter books are the perfect fit for him! I feel like the chapters are the ideal length as he can get discouraged if it takes too long to make progress. The illustrations are simple but incredibly helpful (and cute!) for younger readers to see what’s going on. Something else I really appreciated was the list of Tier 2 words and discussion prompts to help kiddos dig deeper. There are also more resources available using the QR code or link provided in the book which I will be recommending to all educators in our lives. Whether you’re looking to add this to your school curriculum or for home reading, I highly recommend this book (and this series) because it truly engages the kids in so many different ways.
Dylan, Emily and their adorable dog Theodore are off on another adventure, with another mystery to solve. When Emily and Dylan join the neighborhood baseball team, and head to their first practice in the park, they are brought into a mystery. Upon arriving, they learn that the plates for the bases are missing! While the trio explores the park in search of the missing plates, they come across many obstacles to navigate. Sometimes the obstacles are as simple as talking to playground pirates, and sometimes they are more intricate. With Detective Dylan on the case, along with his sister Emily and trusty puppy Theodore, no mystery is too great! This is a great book for elementary kids, and while it is a part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone book without any issues.
The latest installment of the Detective Dylan series has Dylan, Emilie and their dog searching for the bases to their baseball field. This is a cute story that has children using their creative skills to figure out where they can be. The birthday party? The toddler pirates? Who might the culprit be? My grandson and I giggled through this story. He enjoyed the mystery. I enjoy the fact that he is able to work on his language and reading skills as we read the story together. In searching for clues, kids will also be able to learn some basic math. It's really a fun story that has some educational value that they don't realize because the story is so entertaining. Our favorite part was the toddlers asleep on the equipment. We will be eagerly awaiting the next book.
This is the first time we have picked up a book by this author. The Author has developed a great mystery book for future super sleuths. It's a quick chapter book for your not so little ones, about 80 pages. It took us a couple days but only because we read it before bedtime every night. My nephew loves that it wasn't just a plain Chapter book. But one with illustrations in it to help with visuals and to help keep his attention.I'm definitely going to go get the first one to read. So we can see more adventures from Dylan, Emily and Theodore. Also I can't wait for book number 3 to be released🥰 What I loved was that there was additional Resources provided at the end of the book for extra learning. I highly recommend reading this!
This book is the second in the series and it just as fun and entertaining as the first one. It was great to revisit these characters and be taken on more adventures with them. My kids absolutely loved this story, probably even more so than book 1. The illustrations in the book really bring it to life. It makes it so much easier to visualise the characters and the story overall. This series are the first books that we have read by this author but, if they are any indication as to what to expect, then I think we will become much more familiar with their work. This is a fantastic book that the whole family enjoyed.

Dylan, Emily, and their dog Theodore are trying to help Mr. Farner find the missing plates from the baseball field. They go check the playground where the Benny brothers are guarding the sandbox. But they don’t have them. There is also a birthday party at the park going on, they check there where a little girl is wanting a softball party. She doesn’t have it. They go on all these adventures to find the missing baseball plates. Well they end up going back to the start where a few smaller kids are playing pirates at the jungle gym. And wouldn’t ya know, they have the missing plates! This was another absolutely adorable story of detective Dylan!!
Detective Dylan and The Hunt for Home Plate was a super adorable children’s chapter book. It’s the second book in The Young Sleuths children’s book series. It would be perfect for children who know how to read but are beginners at reading chapter books. There are only ten short chapters. Dylan, his sister Emily, and their pup Theodore arrive at the baseball field to find that home plate and the rest of the bases are missing. They luckily have Dylan’s detective kit to help solve the mystery. I think children would find themselves caught up and immersed in the book with MJ Murray’s engaging writing until reaching the satisfying ending.
Absolutely adorable kids mystery book! It makes for a great bedtime read for children. Both my kiddos enjoyed reading it with me to their niece and nephew. It was a hit with all four kiddos so I call that a major win! Reading it and listening to the kids try to solve the mystery alongside the trio in the book really showcased how great the story was.
Dylan is back with his sister Emily and their dog Theodore. It is time to play ball except something important is missing from the field. The home plate and bases! Never fear, our trio of detectives is there to solve the mystery!
Detective Dylan, his little sister, Emily, and their dog, Theodore, are back on the case! The three work as a team to solve the case of the missing plates. This is the 2nd detective Dylan book in the series, but honestly, I think it was a bigger hit than the first with the niece and nephew. They love these books. I love the fact that two kids who normally are not readers will sit down and read these books! Between the story and the illustrations, there is enough to keep the kids engaged and learning along the way. I would absolutely recommend this series.
The Detective Dylan series is fast becoming one of my favorites!
As an educator, I appreciate the way it hooks readers. Engagement is so important, and this book definitely has it.
Characters have to problem solve. Perseverance is evident. Both can lead to great discussions in the classroom.
This would be great for first/second grade teachers. The book comes with pre-selected discussion questions and Tier 2 vocabulary words. PLUS downloadable math and ELA resources that are FREE! Who doesn’t love free?!
This story is an easy and cute read for young children. Dylan and his little sister are off to the park to learn and practice baseball with the neighborhood kids. Little did they know that there would be a problem, an adventure to be had, a mystery to solve. Good thing Dylan and Emily have a detective kit and like solving mysteries.
This story was fun to read. I imagine reading it to 1st grade aged children. I love the classroom prompts at the end of the story. This story is fun and educational. My favorite type of children’s books.
Another wonderful book for young readers. Again, as with the first book it’s such a great way to introduce younger readers to chapter books and continuing series books. The characters in the story are really relatable and the plot was easy and clear to follow. Dylan and his little sister, Emily, are on the case of missing bases. This book is great for capturing children’s imagination as they will be able to find and try to work out clues along with the main characters in the story.
This is a cute little story. I really think that a lot of kids would enjoy this story. Dylan, his sister Emily, and their dog Theodore make a good team as they work together to solve the mystery. The story is full of inspiration as it tells the story of not only working together to solve a mystery but also not giving up when you run into a problem or roadblock. I highly recommend this series for your kids that like to read.
