A splendid sequel to ENHANCED! Loved this tale of genetics and identity, where the search for family intertwines with high-stakes action. This series is so wonderful. I'm honored to have read an advanced copy of this book and can't stop telling other people about it, especially all the TCK (third culture kids). It captures life across cultures so well. The fact that it does so in an entertaining and fantastical world makes it even better. Five Stars!

Oh. My. Word. This sequel to Enhanced is absolutely stunning. The character development, plot twists, and, well, literally every part of this book had me squealing and on the edge of my seat.
I’ll admit, when I was first working my way through Enclave’s books, I was hesitant to read this series because it’s not something I typically read. But I am oh so glad that I did because about a chapter into the first book I was completely hooked. And then… something crazy happened… the second book was 10000% better. I’m a firm believer in “The first book is always the best” but Candace proved me wrong. And if she can destroy my very firm conclusion on the quality of each book in a series, I can’t wait to see what she’s going to do to us with book three.
Note: I received a ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review:))

The search for The Hybrid just intensified....

Wow, and I thought Enhanced was a wild thrill-a-minute ride...Well, Candace Kade has topped it with Hybrid, the second book in her The Hybrid series. Even more intense, this book spans the globe and takes the heroine to new heights – and lows. Old and new enemies converge on Urban every time she seems to be getting close to some answers. And possible betrayal leaves our heroine – not to mention readers – wondering if there is anyone she can trust.

While sci-fi and dystopian are genres that I haven't really read a lot of, it is stories like Hybrid and authors like Candace Kade who keep me coming back and trying new things. The vividness of The Hybrid series is undeniable. You can totally see the story unfolding in your mind's eye and you quickly become invested in Urban's life. At the end of each book it is so hard to say goodbye to the characters but at least with these first two books readers know that there will at least be one more.

Candace Kade's fiction maybe aimed at a YA audience but it is just too good to be limited to only one age group – hence the reason this adult reader is such a fan. I sincerely enjoyed every page of Hybrid and I am on tenterhooks as to what will happen next in the world of The Hybrid...

HYBRID takes all the bracing thrill of book 1 and kicks it up about fifteen notches! Through life-threatening photo shoots, close calls with giant scorpions, more illegal motorcycle races, and mobs (Ah! Mobs.) Kade weaves a truly action-packed plot with a complex emotional experience and healthy dose of heartache and triumph in turn. Plus a character redemption that absolutely broke my cool. It really is more of an exciting ride than a read, and I loved how themes of family and identity pervaded the temple heists, globe trotting, and high-tech sleuthing. Dr. Yukio may also be a new favorite character, and I really hope we get to see more of him in the next book!

Read an arc of this book, boy are you gonna love it! If you want to know what happens to Urban, if she's natural, enhanced, or something in between, make yourself a nice coffee and grab a cozy blanket, cause you won't want to put this down.

its been a few days since i read this, and i thought that would help me process it in order to write a better review, but it seems like i just forgot most of what happened. so uhh,, anyway, we'll go off what i do remember.

i did not like the games in this book. it felt forced and unnecessary. honestly, a lot of the world building felt that way. i think i would have enjoyed this book better if the plot was mostly focused on the thing--instead of like 100 (the games, her school, kol things, the hybrid, etc.). even though some of them connected, it just felt like way too much.

the plot twist at the end... im not sure if i liked it or not. it made sense, but... ehh...

what i did really like, though, was finally getting more info about lucas! i dont hate him anymore. and towards the end, too, i started liking urban. she stopped being annoying. i could hardly stand her in the first book with sosh this and sosh that and woe is me im not enhanced. but that was literally like the last two chapters.

and that brings me to the next topic... the actual enhancements. honestly, i hate them. it does make for an interesting story, which is why i even read these books, but i wish the author didn't make it seem like you just HAD to be enhanced. instead of "equality between enhanced and naturals" it was more "let naturals get enhanced too". i thought that maybe everest would be more on the "its okay to be natural" side, but that was not the case...

segway into the romance... that i couldn't care less about. they started fake dating, for whatever reason. usually i would be behind that but it felt ridiculous here...

her art teacher was probably my favorite character. i would have LOVED to get more info about her art class. her final project at the end was also ridiculous. and does it even count, if she didn't make it? thats basically cheating. who cares if she almost died the chapter before... LOL im kidding. mostly.

i was under the impression that this was a duology but i guess not? anyway, since i was liking the end, maybe ill like the next book. idk.

I definitely enjoyed this one more than the first book. I love Kade's ability to describe the world vividly without making me feel like I'm slogging through paragraphs of information.

Sidenote: I'm not really a fan of all the alcohol consumption, even though the main character doesn't imbibe. With this being YA, I'm a bit wary of how the alcohol issue might come across to younger readers.

The romance in this (and Enhanced) feels forced and superficial to me, and I was relieved when it dropped out of focus for the last third of the book. Every time I came across a section of romance content, I started it, only to become almost immediately uncomfortable/disenchanted and then end up skimming or skipping until I made it back to the main story. For the record, I find the vast majority of romance content intensely uncomfortable/unpalatable to read, and this was not an exception. I am extremely particular in this regard, so I have no doubt others will have vastly differing opinions on this front.

All that being said, I loved the way this story kept moving. Even during times when characters weren't in physical motion, the story was still taking forward strides, and I never felt stuck. The question of who the Hybrid was stayed with me until the reveal, and I enjoyed the process of discovering the truth surrounding that particular mystery. Competitions and tests are something I really enjoy reading too, and Hybrid had multiple instances of that, which was a fun plus for me.

*Thanks @enclavepublishing for my earc!

Hybrid follows Urban and her journey from book one so I don’t want to spoil the plot, but this was a great sequel to “Enhanced”. Candace created such a unique world and I think anyone who enjoys Dystopian fiction will enjoy this series! There was a great twist that I wasn’t expecting and the set up for book two left me really wanting more! I really enjoyed the character development in this one too.

Swipe to see the picture I used from the cover reveal from when my little girl was tiny. I had to recreate it now thag she’s bigger!

Read this if:
-You enjoy Chinese culture.
-You like Dystopian fiction.
-You ever wondered what it would be like to have special abilities.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.5/5 stars)

HYBRID is book 2 in The Hybrid Series. Be sure to read ENHANCED (book 1) before starting its sequel.

HYBRID starts off about 2 weeks after the ending of ENHANCED. Once again, I enjoyed the futuristic world Kade has created. HYBRID is, for perhaps the first half of the book, set in the Asian Federation (same place as ENHANCED). The author once again made me hungry with all the Chinese food referenced. (And once again I was googling all the unfamiliar dishes.)

Somewhere in the middle of the story, main character Lee Urban (along with a few others) makes her way over to the Western Federation. While there, Urban hopes to get some answers about her birth family as well as search for information about the hybrid.

We know the hybrid is key. Will Urban and her friends discover the truth about the hybrid?

🤐🤐🤐

You’ll want to read HYBRID and find out what happens! *squees* It’s so good! I can’t wait for book 3!

I would recommend this story to older teen and adult readers who enjoy a fun & clean YA scifi adventure.

Because HYBRID is published as Christian fiction, I will note that there is (so far) no overt faith represented in this series (some Christian themes are in there, but they’re really subtle). I personally enjoyed it as a well-written, creative, Christian-made story.

I received an ebook ARC of HYBRID from the publisher/author. All opinions expressed in this review are my honest thoughts about this book.

As in Enhanced, the worldbuilding is great. I loved all of the small details Kade woven throughout the narrative that add another level of depth to the setting. It was also fun exploring the Western Federation--some of the Texas-ish things made me laugh. =)

The plot was well balanced, juggling multiple subplots all while keeping the pacing and tension. Be warned, the last quarter of the book is full of twists and turns that will keep you eagerly reading. There was a certain plot twist that I would have liked to have grounded/foreshadowed a little more, but I'm anticipating there being more explanation behind it in the third book.

While many YA books often brush off family, I loved how Hybrid focused on family and its importance. Urban's arc was done very well in relation to the theme.

While second books in a trilogy sometimes suffer from "filler syndrome," Hybrid certainly does not and will leave readers eager for the conclusion to the series.

Cautions: moderate romance; one kiss; non-graphic moderate violence

(I received an eARC from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.)

If your origin story was a bit mysterious to begin with and then your reference point gets obliterated, you may find yourself in a position to either sink or swim. But what if you had to not only lean into your greatest fear, but dive head first to survive?

Lee Urban in Candace Kade’s 2nd book of The Hybrid Series: HYBRID is learning how to dive deep into an ocean of unanswered questions that could very well take her own life and those she loves.

Once again tapping into the very plausible landscape of a futuristic society immersed in an incredibly controversial genetic science culture, Kade continues this thrilling ride that will shake you to your core.

This book is highly enjoyable and an excellent format to ask yourself the deeper questions of life and how we should live now for a better outcome for future generations.

HYBRID launches March 5th! Go grab yourself a copy of both books in the series today!!! https://www.bestofbooksok.com/preorde...

Candace Kade's latest book, 'Hybrid', is a captivating continuation of the first book in the series. It follows the journey of Lee Urban, a young woman on a quest to find her birth parents and discover her true purpose in the world. As a Christian reader, I found many relatable themes in this book - the search for meaning and purpose, and the importance of having Jesus in our lives.

The main character, Lee Urban, is a relatable and likeable character. Her struggles and doubts about her identity and purpose are something that many of us can understand. As Christians, we know that without Jesus, we are lost and searching for meaning. Lee's journey mirrors this, as she tries to find her place in the world without knowing who she truly is.

Kade does a great job of weaving this theme into the story, making it relatable to readers of all ages. However, as much as I enjoyed Lee's adventures, there were some elements in the book that I found concerning. As a young adult book, I feel that it should have been geared more towards adults, especially considering the mature content that was included.

There were some uncomfortable situations in the book, such as partying, drinking, and romantic scenes that were not necessary for the story. As a Christian, I believe that young adults do not need to be exposed to these things, especially in Christian books. It sends the wrong message and can be misleading for readers.

Moreover, I was a little disappointed that Jesus was not clearly portrayed as the central Savior in the book. Lee Urban seemed to be the savior of humankind, and this could potentially send the wrong message to young readers. As Christians, we know that Jesus is the only Savior, and this should have been more readily portrayed in the book.

Despite these concerns, I did enjoy the book overall. Kade's writing style is engaging and kept me hooked until the very end. Her descriptions and vivid imagery brought the story to life, making it easy to visualize the events as they unfolded. I would definitely recommend this book, with a word of caution for young adults.

In conclusion, 'Hybrid' by Candace Kade is a well-written and enjoyable read. It continues the saga of Lee Urban's journey to find her birth parents and discover her true purpose. While I appreciated the themes of finding meaning and purpose in life, I feel that the book could have been more appropriate for young adult readers. Nevertheless, I would still recommend it, with a bit of caution, to adults looking for an entertaining read.

I received a complimentary copy from the author through Celebrate Lit, for my honest opinion.

Candace doesn't hold back in this electrifying continuation to book 1! Featuring super-sized beasts, illegal underwater experiments, terrifying games, and a dizzying web of twists and turns, Hybrid takes you on a wild adventure that you aren't soon to forget.

The book starts out with a bang, pulling us into the colorful, exciting cultural world of New Beijing as Urban spends Lunar New Year with her family. The abundance of concrete details is one of my favorite parts of this series--Candace has woven such a colorful, vibrant world into this exhilarating tale, and it really comes to life because of her attention to detail!

I loved how the family dynamics were developed in book two. I adored the protective, older sister vibes from Lillian. And it made my heart happy to see Lucas and Urban finally resolve the tension between them (also, his whole personality cracks me up). As the oldest of five siblings, it always warms me to see healthy family dynamics in fiction.

Just like in book one, as a TCK, I could deeply relate to Urban's struggles of not belonging in Enhanced society and not knowing what her identity was. Candace has brought a fresh, creative spin on this common longing for belonging and identity, one I know many TCKs will find solace in.

Everest and Urban's relationship really improved in this second book. I enjoyed watching them struggle and learn and grow together through their adventures--all the time becoming closer to each other and realizing what's really important. Everest's protective nature melted my heart.

There were so many mind-boggling twists and turns that I could hardly keep up--or put the book down! You won't be able to resist the pace of this thrilling, adrenaline-filled ride. And I found the political and cultural details sprinkled throughout quite fascinating--especially in the way they reflect modern happenings. Because after all, fiction is never truly fictitious, only a reflection of our own world.

Candace has outdone herself again in this intense sequel to Enhanced--I can't wait to read the next installment of Urban's story!

HYBRID takes readers into a world full of genetic changes and a social system of those who are enhanced by such changes and those who are not. It's a complex system and interesting in all its nuances. The heroine seeks someone as well as answers to her past, and in so doing continues to find herself in danger. Recommended to all sci-fi fans.

I liked all the characters in this story, particularly Urban. She's just a regular, girl-next-door college student who is trying to do her best in school, hide her lack of enhancements, and survive. She's in hiding and travelling in this second book and I enjoyed seeing her character continue to develop as the story goes. I also liked her relationships with those around her, especially her sister, boyfriends and roommates.

The plot and secrets have been developing since the first book and those continue here in book two. Urban's path looks a bit different here as the story doesn't carry out as much at college. A feeling of danger underlies the story from beginning to end. It's a steadily paced story, but one that maintains a constant tension so that readers keep turning pages to find out what will happen next.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an overall solid second book in this series with plenty of clues leading to the next book. Readers will enjoy the likable characters, engaging plot, and an interesting sci-fi world.

After reading Enhanced, I was curious to see where Kade would take Urban in the next book. There were several questions I had left unanswered, and thankfully, Kade was able to answer all of them in Hybrid.

While I am not the biggest fan of science fiction, I felt that Kade did a very good job with character and world development in the series. I am fascinated by New Beijing and honestly, would like to know more about it.

I have to say, Urban wasn’t my favorite character in the first book, but during this one, she grew on me. I love her determination and her desire to help others like her. The plotline itself was intriguing enough, just slow moving at some parts. It felt like there were some parts of it that were just filler for word count purposes. I also felt myself frustrated by Everest’s and Urban’s relationship, as it was so back and forth and neither of them could seem to figure out what they want or really communicate.

I really did find the last third of the novel fascinating and wish it had been drawn out longer. The ending itself was interesting and I wanted to know how Urban would get out of the situation she found herself in.

Overall, I would recommend this series to anyone who loves science fiction. Its clean, interesting, with a well-developed world and characters.

This book definitely lived up to book one!! I absolutely adored this book! There are so many puzzle pieces laid throughout the story that are all put together in the end and made into this absolute masterpiece!

🩷 Here are my favorite things about this book:
- THE PLOT TWISTS! Oh my gosh! Just wild!
- Everything was so well planned out and the things that were actually foreshadowing didn't *feel* like foreshadowing if that makes sense? Sometimes scenes that are meant to lay the groundwork for bigger things end up feeling kinda boring but all of this was just so fun and fast paced I didn't even know it was leading to even bigger things!
- It's just fun! There are so many scenes that are just so enjoyable to read! They're action packed and make you want to keep reading and they transport you to this vivid world that's so easy to get caught up in.
- The Texas-ish place they visited! It was so fun reading about the cultural differences that are similar to our world!

🚨 Trigger/content warnings:
This book was a bit more intense than the first one in its violence and the evilness of the villains but it wasn't gory. There's a lot of discussion about Enhanced and Naturals killing each other and different organizations that do that. I can't really say anymore without spoiling it, but feel free to DM me if you want a more detailed list of the violence level :)

Another great adventure where we find Urban trying to have a great time with family celebrating Lunar New Year. Everyone is looking forward to the festivities but just beyond the horizon lurks something. I was surprised at all the shenanigans going on and the battles Urban faced. There are a few funny moments with family members which I liked. Siblings fighting over silly things makes the story more realistic.

The story is good as Urban meets old friends and starts an adventure to finding out who Hybrid is. Hybrid is powerful in ways that kinda scare me. Why would someone want to follow someone who has power that is not good? Urban finds answers to her biological family. Does she find something that could harm her? There were many questions I had as I read the story which made me want to read faster.

After reading the first two books in this series I was happy to see the story continue with this one. I believe there is more secrets unraveling in this story with dark meanings. Who is Hybrid? What purpose does Hybrid serve? Will Urban find the answers she needs? Grab a copy and join Urban on her quest.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

At the end of November, I received an e-Arc of "Hybrid" by Candace Kade from Enclave Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

"Hybrid" is the sequel to "Enhanced." This series is an edge-of-your-seat dystopian sci-fi that has action, advanced technology, and enhanced genetics.

"Dr. Yukio's three stages of art and life came back to mind: 'First, it seems unsurmountable, then it becomes challenging, and finally, it is complete.'"

In a world where parents can decide to enhance their unborn child's DNA, Lee Urban is a natural (she does not have enhanced genetics). However, her adoptive family is enhanced. This causes complications due to the ever growing tensions between naturals and the enhanced. Although there's a lot I can't talk about because of spoilers, there some key things to note about this series.

First, the futuristic/dystopian setting is perfection. I love the creativity and originality that went into the setting and the tech used by the characters. This is a world I would both love and be terrified to live in.

Second, the found family element is strong in this story. Since Urban is adopted and a natural, she often feels inadequate and out of place in her family's world. However, the friendships she makes at university show her she's not alone and that she does have a place to belong. A place she's accepted, wanted, and even loved.

Third, can I say plot twists enough? Cause both "Enhanced" and "Hybrid" have A LOT of them. The best way I can describe the plot twists in these books is waves. They come in waves. Just when you think the waters have settled. BOOM. Another wave sends you sprawling into cold, dark waters. However, this just might be my favorite element of Kade's storytelling. She keeps you reading!

As a whole, I love this series. It has everything I want in a YA science fiction-exciting plot, enduring characters, and a world so incredible I dream of visiting. Thank you so much to Candace Kade and Enclave Publishing for sending me an early copy. Bring on book #3!

I think I enjoyed this book more than the first one! Action, suspense, mystery, family, and of course motorcycle races had me devouring this book to find out what happened next. With vivid descriptions of the Lunar New Year festival at the beginning of the book and all the food, it made me want to try all of the dishes in the story. The author deepens the descriptions of different gene types, and switches locations to the Western Federation for another AI game.

Hybrid takes Lee Urban on a journey that gets her closer to finding the hybrid, and at the same time finding out more about what family means to her along the way. Urban continues to deepen friendships, and endures shocking betrayals. While some questions from book one have been answered, there are many more questions remaining that will have you impatiently waiting for book three.

Favourite Quote: “We can’t always choose our family.”... “But we can choose to make the most of the family we have.”

I highly recommend this book and book one for those enjoy clean young adult science fiction.

I want to thank author Candace Kade and Enclave Publishing for a copy of the eARC of this book. All opinions are my own.

Hybrid is the second book in the suspense filled Enhanced series. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one, especially the last half of the book. So many twists and turns!

Just like Enhanced, Hybrid’s setting doesn’t fail to impress! The technology was fabulous! Each piece made the already intriguing places Urban visited all the more dazzling!

Seeing the characters from the first book was a warm welcome (or excitingly shocking in the best way!). While I wished I could have seen more from one or two of the side characters, the impact Urban’s family and friends had on the plot was so wonderful! I haven’t read too many books recently that hold family in high importance like Hybrid does. I cannot wait to see these characters again in the next book!

I highly recommend Hybrid to anyone interested in fast paced action, powerful plot twists, and swoon-worthy but clean romance!

The awaited for by me, squeal to Enhanced is here, Hybrid. A super strong second book in the series, I jumped right into this. Lee is in much more deeply than before. Can they find the hybrid who can bring peace to this divided world? The action and everything ramps up incredibly in this book. Lee Urban just wants answers to what is she? Why was she put up for adoption and so many other questions will have clues or answers. I'm still trying to decided what I think of Everest, in regards to him and Lee. Don't worry, this is a clean read. It's just good Sci-Fi and that's something I don't get tired of. I can't wait for the third book in this series. This one has so much in it, I'm not sure I can do this book justice with this review.

Hybrid by Candace Kade is Young Adult Science Fiction. This book continues the story of Lee Urban and her family, friends, and enemies. If you have not read the first book, I recommend reading it before this one.

With an over-the-top party, a transport vehicle that resembles a spider, dangerous enemies, an ex-boyfriend who plays an important role, underwater entanglements, twists and turns, and more, this book will keep you reading. I loved seeing how the author continued to develop the characters and the storyline.

The author does an excellent job of drawing you into the story and creating interesting family dynamics.

My only complaint about this book is that it ended. I wanted to keep reading. i feel like there is so much more to this story. So, if you are looking for Young Adult Science Fiction, check out Hybrid by Candace Kade. I definitely recommend it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Hybrid is another exciting and entertaining read from the talented author, Candace Kade. It is, also, the second installment from the series by the same name, The Hybrid. It was great catching up with Lee Urban from book one, Enhanced . Once again, I was caught up in unpredictable adventure and fast paced action. I loved how the author's use of details that made me feel as though I, too, had transformed into a new world. I thought it was pretty good.

I am giving Hybrid four and a half stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading, clean young adult and science fiction genres. I am curious to see if there will be more to come from the The Hybrid series.

Kade delivers a solid story in this sequel to her first book, Enhanced. As you might guess from the title, this book picks up where book 1 left off, investigating the mysterious Hybrid—someone who may be able to bring peace to the world by uniting the Naturals and Enhanced.

In the process, Urban travels across the world with old friends. She butts heads with her family and searches for her biological father. Everest returns to gift Urban with a big box of romantic angst. Fortunately, Urban has other things to distract her. Some enemies, new and old, jump in with some nice, diverting attempts on her life.

Kade deepens the world by exploring the Western Federation and unveiling new factions. She delivers good themes in an entertaining story with a satisfying ending.

That said, I do wish the next book was out already, so I could keep reading!

I've said multiple times that the first book in this series (Enhanced) might have been might favorite book of 2023, and Hybrid definitely delivered a solid follow-up! We are still with our main character, Lee Urban, as she continues to navigate a genetically enhanced society as a "natural" or someone without enhancements. Or is she. There is a rumor of someone out there who is the hybrid - someone that can manifest multiple enhancements and not just at birth. This story is a perfect example of a well-written dystopian future - one where science gives parents the rights to make changes to their children before they are born. But is it always right?

Highly recommend for young adults, teens and even middle graders as a great, clean sci fi story that you can get lost in!

Wow. Hybrid is a crazy ride from start to finish, with several twists and turns I never saw coming. The incredible world-building continues, and the deepening of relationships makes this a story I wish I could jump into.

Urban’s journey is incredible. Her search for her biological family, while she simultaneously seeks to protect her adopted family, her desire to be loved first by Everest, and her tenacity in giving her all to fight for the good of others is amazing. Each page made me wish I could step into her world and become her friend.

The secrets that come to light, the expansion of the world, and the development of the characters combine to make this a book I’ll definitely reread. Hybrid came to a close much too quickly, and I can’t wait for the next one to be released!

Get ready for a roller coaster ride with ups, downs, and some big twists. If you’re like me, there will be a moment where you yell, “What?! NO! WHAT?!?”  The author has delivered her second page turner in HYBRID. Enhanced was fabulous, but she stepped it up even more for Hybrid. Some things I loved:

📕Questioning everyone.
📕No one is safe.
📕Urban makes daring choices.
📕Twists.
📕Cool tech.
📕No idea what will happen next.
📕Left me wanting more.
You’ll also find fake dating, vivid scenery descriptions, and danger on almost every page.

(Mild spoiler/emotional content):
This does feature some human experimentation and some emotionally tough scenes with a character’s abduction. No explicit language or “heat.”

I was fortunate to get to read an advanced copy of this book. Hybrid is a captivating second installment in Candace Kade’s science fiction trilogy! I just love the immersive and utterly unique setting, full of rich details and fascinating technology. This book had plenty of mystery and action, plus a great cast of relatable characters. I was eagerly turning pages, and I couldn't stop thinking about it once I was done. I will be impatiently awaiting the next book!
