Back from straightening out one mess and going directly into another. But isn’t that always the way?
This book dealt almost exclusively with known characters and it was great to get a bit more insight and closure on some of them. I loved the politics, the plotting, and the way everything played out in a rich tapestry of worldbuilding that continues to become ever more complex....more

I was honestly sceptical if Carrie Ryan would be able to pick it up and finish it in a way that did justice both to the original series and to Caine as a writer. Happily, my concerns were misplaced. Trapper Road is as solid an entry as any of the books in the Stillhouse Lake series.
For anyone sitting on the fence, I would encourage you to read it. Ryan has reproduced the strong voice Caine gave to the story of Gwen Proctor and her family. Judging from the Epilogue, another book might be in the works? If so, I am all in for it.
This story includes not only the usual difficulties the family experiences, but also has Gwen and Connor both dealing with trauma and fallout from ruinous events. As usual it was exciting and fast paced, particularly towards the end, and I really felt invested in all the characters.
The audiobook this time was read by Emily Sutton-Smith alone voicing all of the POV characters. While I did (just a little bit) miss the other former cast members at first, Sutton-Smith does such an excellent job that by halfway through, I wasn’t thinking about them at all....more

Five books in and every one is strong. This one started as an investigation of a heinous crime, and ended with a sequence as tense as that in The Silence of the Lambs. I can’t say much because I don’t want to give a single thing away, but if you’ve followed Gwen Procter and her family this far, you won’t be disappointed at this point.

I don’t read a ton of suspense fiction, but honestly, this series is absolutely solid and I’ve enjoyed every book. As before, the audio production is amazing, and if you like audiobooks I would recommend this series without hesitation. It’s a great listen....more

I could still be in college somewhere else, somewhere better than this. How fucking naive was I to think wearing a uniform would be better than school? How stupid was I to think it was worth signing up to die instead of fixing the things about my life that were broken? How stupid were any of us to think this was just an adventure? We've treated this like it's all been about sightseeing, writing blogs, posting pictures on Facebook, getting medals, tax-free pay, showing off, and telling war stories to people back home who don’t know any better.
A fantastic slow build horror book that examines the weird juxtaposition of banality and surreality of war, mixed with the frightening decay of one’s own mind and fracturing of reality.
With absolutely effective use of an increasingly unreliable narrator, John Milas ratchets the tension with a slow but inexorable hand. This was especially effective with the masterful narration in the audiobook version. The utterance of the final line literally gave me chills. An amazing debut by a talented new author to watch.
”No one made me join the Marines or come to Afghanistan. I chose both of those. All of this has been worthless. I would have never known the truth if I hadn't come here with a gun like people have been doing since before I was old enough to enlist. Since before I was born. No one back home knows what it's like here because they weren't as desperate as I was. They're all so lucky they can ignore everything. I wish I was like them. But now I'm stuck here, and I'll never be able to tell them what it's like. They'll keep living their busy, important lives forgetting there's a war happening here. I can't move. I can't move and it's too late. Too late for everything. There's nowhere to go. Nothing else to think about. I wish the militia house would send me somewhere else again, somewhere good, just one last time....more

Wow, this was so good! Lots of plotting, excitement, and action from start to finish. It's a direct sequel to Stillhouse Lake, and ties up the story from that one nicely. I personally find the idea of deep-fakes, the sense that no one believes you because of them, and cyberstalkers incredibly stressful, so I was fairly gripped throughout this one.
The story was told from four POVs this time: Gwen (still badass), Sam (typical tormented hero type, but I still like him), Lanny (typical hormonal teen girl), and Connor (typical pre-teen boy who makes bad decisions on his own). I know some reviewers didn't like the kids' perspectives, but I thought it added an extra dimension to the story.
I'll probably take a little break and then continue, because this series makes me want to binge-listen to the audiobooks and I actually have stuff I need to do that includes paying attention to people...at least for a few minutes anyway....more

An excellent psychological thriller, filled with twists, turns, and lots of action.
I’ve read several of Rachel Caine’s books and they are always entertaining. Stillhouse Lake is no exception. The atmosphere is tense from the start and ramps up slowly to an action packed ending. Gwen Proctor is a character you can root for; she fights for her family and, while not perfect, she is understandably fallible yet always formidable.
The ending was absolutely heart-stopping and, yes, I’m definitely going to continue the series.
Notes on the audiobook: narrator Emily Sutton-Smith does an excellent job of voicing the non-nonsense Gwen, and gives other characters life with subtle accents that don’t feel forced or over-the-top. Top marks for narration....more
3.5 stars rated relative to the other books in the series
I agree with other reviewers that this is probably the weakest book of the series, but that i3.5 stars rated relative to the other books in the series
I agree with other reviewers that this is probably the weakest book of the series, but that isn't saying much considering the incredibly high standard we are talking about. No, there isn't a ton of action; yes, there is a lot of internal mono/dialogue. That doesn't ultimately matter though because King still conjures that ineffable substance that makes anything he writes worth reading. Like the previous books in the series, Song of Susannah gets to your heart, your hopes, and your dreams for our band of travellers both cursed and blessed.
