I have always been fascinated by archeological digs. I even collected a few fossils as a child. This book scratched my itch for more information about the early years of paleontology in the US. Not only did the details keep my attention, the plot was excellent and the main characters were likable. Mystery and intrigue permeated the story and the history of Bone Wars was deftly woven in. I liked the way Ms. Woodhouse portrayed a spiritual element in Martha and Jacob’s lives and the ethical struggle that Jacob had after being fired. Martha could be stubborn but that trait served her well in her search for the truth about scripture and God and reconciling the Bible and Science.
This was a compelling historical, containing a sweet romance and suspenseful scenes.
I am really loving this series set in the 1800s about women in the field of paleontology. This was a clear winner for me.

Wow! What a riveting sequel in the Treasures of the Earth series! Kimberley Woodhouse brilliantly combines history, a compelling mystery, a rollercoaster romance, and faith in this exciting new book. I’ve always been fascinated by dinosaurs and loved learning more about the Bone Wars in Set in Stone. Set in the late 1800’s when female paleontologists were unheard of, this story captured the competitive, thrilling, painstakingly difficult job of excavating dinosaur bones in the quarries of Utah & Colorado made even more challenging for a woman in a predominantly male field. It’s a page-turning historical mystery/romance I eagerly devoured!

Martha Jankowski grew up admiring her father’s work and as a child, enjoyed participating in his paleontological digs up until she was forced to stop after her father was severely injured. Now as an adult, she’s reawakened her dream of discovering dinosaur bones and having her name in a museum despite her mother’s disapproval. The competition for finding the next big discovery is fierce, and dangerous, especially when there’s another team working against her. Finding obstacles and sabotage at every turn, the only person Martha can rely on is her friend Jacob, a paleontology student who appreciates her intellect and shares her passion for dinosaur bones. But, when Jacob’s motives are called into question and he’s accused of theft and murder, can she trust him? And what of her fledgling faith Jacob reintroduced her to?

Absolutely loved this story and the opposites attract romance! Where Martha’s from the wealthy, upper class, Jacob struggles to help support his family, and their class differences are definitely a hurdle to overcome. There’s also the question of faith between them. With Darwin’s discoveries and writings, Martha struggles with the tension between science and religion while Jacob is a strong believer. As they reconcile differences, their sometimes turbulent relationship develops into a beautiful love. Jacob is ever patient and I appreciated his humility and willingness to work things out when Martha was often quick to judge and understandably wary of trusting others. I loved how their relationship evolved and they grew together.

The mystery definitely kept me turning the pages, especially with a female villain! I loved getting her chilling perspective and don’t worry, I’m not spoiling anything because there are several suspects with motivations for murder. While I definitely had my suspicions, I loved the uncertainty until the very end when the devious plot is all revealed.

I also appreciated the history incorporated in Set in Stone. Each chapter begins with a compelling quote from Earl Douglass, a turn of the century paleontologist who first discovered dinosaur bones where the Dinosaur National Monument now sits. I loved how the author captured a glimpse of what must have been like to find these amazing discoveries through the eyes of the characters.

Highly recommend this well written, unique, exciting, historical mystery/romance! Though part of a series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. Now, I’m eagerly anticipating the next book in the series. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author and publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.

No one but a master storyteller can keep cranking out one outstanding story after another. Kimberley Woodhouse has proven herself one such author transitioning from contemporary suspense to historical romance with ease.

In Set in Stone, Ms. Woodhouse transports her readers to the late nineteenth century Bone Wars, an event I had little knowledge until I started reading this series. As readers follow Martha's and Jacob's adventures, they will discover the world of paleontology and what it was like to be a paleontologist in the late nineteenth century. I absolutely loved the way she incorporated the debate between faith and science.

Ms. Woodhouse's love of research provides rich historical detail to a romance filled with adventure and suspense. Martha must discover whom she can trust as sabotage and murder follow their trail. Told from the points of view of both Martha and Jacob....and the villian. I love the way the author allows her readers to get inside the villains head. Definitely adds to the sinister, creepy aspect of the story.

While this is a series, each book can be read as a standalone. Looking forward to reading the final book in the series.

Absolutely loved it!!! The beginning of this story starts off really intriguing and kept me wanting to finish asap. Two words. Female Villian! Yes, the villain in this story is a woman, which I feel like isn't done that often so that was fun. Besides that, we have Martha who grew up rich but has a love for digging in the dirt, to find dinosaurs! She has a dig site for a dinosaur excavation and is competition with another excavation team to get their dinosaur out first in order to secure it in the museum. This is during the Bone Wars, so there are sabotage risks. Jacob was working on the opposing team, but then got fired and then is on Martha's team. They form a friendship and then more, but Martha struggles with her faith in God and in Jacob. Jacob witnesses to her and helps her understand. There is danger afoot with unsolved murders. I was able to figure out exactly who the villain was pretty quickly and what happened, but I was still not 100% sure throughout the book and I wanted to keep reading to find out for sure. Overall, I thought this was a fantastic book, full of Christian Content.

Within the pages of Set in Stone is where the worlds of faith and science, mystery and romance, and high society and the Wild West all converge for an irresistible tale that you will not want to put down.

Set during the nineteenth-century Bone Wars-era, Set in Stone will either unearth a love for paleontology that you didn’t know existed or increase your love for dirt, rock, and fossils. And through the seamless and engaging storytelling of Kimberley Woodhouse, you get to journey alongside Martha and Jacob and see how God sows and waters the seeds of faith through one’s life, guides and protects those who call on His name, and breaks through the classes of society and a malicious scheme to bring forth His sovereign plan.

Set in Stone is the second book in the Treasures of the Earth series but can be enjoyed as a standalone. And though this is my first book by Kimberley Woodhouse, it will not be my last as I have already ordered book one in the series, The Secrets Beneath, and cannot wait to start it!

Thank you, NetGalley and Bethany House, for the ARC in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Set in the Colorado territory in the late 1800s, this book is full of faith, science, intrigue, and a sweet love story! Kimberly Woodhouse is one of my favorite authors, and I enjoyed reading this book! Her writing is full of surprises and how faith in God can change your life!

What a cast of characters! I liked Martha from the very beginning! She loves digging for bones, and when she gets the chance to be in charge of a dig, she excels at it! Phoebe has a strong faith in God that she uses to encourage Martha. Jacob is passionate about digging for bones. His faith is the most important thing in his life.

There is a huge mystery in this book. I thought that I knew who the perpetrator was, but I was genuinely surprised when the person was revealed! The love story was a little complicated. There were some misunderstandings and hurt feelings, but it all worked out in the end!

This is a definite must-read! I enjoy learning about science and history, and this book combines them both! I look forward to reading more books by Kimberly Woodhouse!

4.5 stars.

This was the second book in the Treasures of the Earth series. Martha has been interested in becoming a paleontologist since she was a young girl. I loved the first book and enjoyed this one as well. I was intrigued and surprised until the very end of the book. This was sweet and the suspense kept me turning the pages. I enjoyed “Set in Stone” and hope there will be another story in the series.

Thank you Netgalley and Bethany House for the arc in exchange for an honest review. These are my own thoughts.

I was happy to have a chance to read the second book in the newest series from Kimberley Woodhouse which focuses on early women paleontologists. Yep--dinosaurs! Just as the first book, this one has a mystery woven through it...every so many chapters a mysterious character up to no good who is unnamed. You just get a few clues here and there.

This book explores the life of Martha and Jacob. Martha is a female paleontologist eager to FINALLY get her name on a identifying plate in a museum with a skeleton she's dug out herself. This is her life's goal. But that means she won't be the society plate her mother expects her to be. But her father (a paleontologist himself) wholeheartedly encourages her fancy. Unfortunately, something happens to him which renders him incapable of any further digging--so she jumps into his shoes. Besides they found a WHOLE one this time and a museum will be displaying it---if she's the first one to get it out of the ground.

Jacob is a bootstrap kind of guy who just falls in love with the idea of digging up things. IN fact he's on a break from finishing his degree to get some real life experience so he can earn money to pay for that degree and the last few classes. HE also enjoys talking to the new woman Martha he met at a seminar. She's his ideal woman!

Naturally nothing flows smoothly and there is a lot of emotion that will come between them before anything is set to right.

So here is my take. Man.

i just couldn't stand Martha! She was so...wishy washy in her behavior to Jacob. I rolled by eyes several times. I don't usually dislike a character that much. But she was just sooo...well. just stupid towards Jacob. LOL

I knew who the villain was from the beginning. Okay, so it was a guess. And it came from reading loads of Kimberley's books and using my assumptions. :) Very satisfying all the same.

The book handled the discussion of science and The Creator very well.

A solid 4 stars for this new release!

Strong women galore!

At the close of the 19th century and on into the early 20th, there was an historical/scientific event known as The Bone Wars or The Great Dinosaur Rush. It was by spurred on by Edward Cope and Othniel Marsh, two world renowned, but unscrupulous, paleontologists. Highlights of their story is woven into the pages of SET IN STONE, by Kimberly Woodhouse.

Woodhouse gives a minimal amount of information on dinosaurs and a moderate amount on the actual digging of the bones. If you’re looking for a detailed, paleontology guide, this isn’t it. She mentions a few tools and very brief techniques to lift stubborn bones but that’s it.

More in keeping with her strength as a writer, Woodhouse gives us great characters. Martha, the central protagonist, starts out like the over done trope of an entitled debutante who meets a guy below her station and yada, yada. As her circumstances become more difficult, she rises to the challenges, buoyed by memories of her former Nanny and new friend/worker at the dig site who have something in common…

Martha’s new governess is nothing like her old Nanny but as she’s now an adult, they have become more like friends - or are they? This woman actually works for Martha’s mother, who is cold, demanding and formidable, not to mention a total enigma. Martha’s home life is not nurturing; something is a bit off.

I wasn’t expecting the strong mystery elements in this book but I enjoyed it very much. Woodhouse makes exquisite use of an unreliable narrator to toss readers about between choices for who the baddie is and THEY. ARE. BAD!

The reason I awarded 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the Epilogue. A few cute paragraphs to tie up the romance arc and account for social responsibility just didn’t do it for me. This wham, bam, HEA ending that many authors are employing currently, is not doing justice to their work, imo. The characters, book and quite frankly, readers, deserve better📚

Set In Stone is a delightful historical mystery with a little romance. Kimberley Woodhouse does not disappoint again! Set in Colorado with archeological setting, the author amazingly provides a great example of a person who thinks she is good and knows God but realizes there is much more to believing He sent His son to die on a cross for our sins and that He wants to have a daily, close relationship with Him. A pleasure to read.

What a great second book in the Treasures of Earth series! I have to say that if this is the first book you pick up from the series you will be okay. I felt like this read as a stand alone except for the introduction to the "Bone Wars" in the first book. This book starts off with a bang and has you turning pages the entire time.

Martha is a paleontologist. She grew up admiring her father's work in paleontology and dreaming of one day pursuing the career. She accomplishes this with some obstacles still obstructing her way. She is definitely a strong female character who is trying to figure out the pull between religion and science. Jacob is our leading man and he is strong in his faith. Together they make a great team.

Listen, this story is full of all the perfect elements... there is history mixed with science, romance, faith, suspense and a mystery that I did not expect at all. Seriously I did not see it coming at all. Seriously I cannot delve into it more because I don't want to give anything away.

Overall I really enjoyed the story. I think the growth of the characters was realistic and the way that Martha realizes what is truly important in life will resonate as you are reading the story. The ending was good but I am wondering if we will see these characters again in the next book...

If you are looking for a new series to start I definitely recommend this one!

Publisher: Bethany House Publishing
Series: Treasures of the Earth, Book 2
Rated: 4
Obtain: Borrow or buy
Back of the Book: “A dangerous scheme could bury their long-held dreams forever. . . .
From the time she was little, Martha Jankowski has been digging in the dirt, much to the dismay of her mother. Now she dreams of being a paleontologist and is determined to make her parents proud by uncovering the next big discovery. When Martha finds what she hopes to be a fully intact dinosaur skeleton--one that could win her an acclaimed exhibit--she learns another team is competing against her and could steal her chance at being recognized for this momentous discovery.
Paleontology student Jacob Duncan has fulfilled his dream of digging for dinosaur bones at last. But when Jacob meets their charming competitor Martha and uncovers foul play within his team, love and danger grow hand in hand until a menacing ruse threatens to destroy it all.”

Impressions: Although this is the second book of the Treasures of the Earth series, it can be read as a stand-alone novel as well. This book followed the historic dinosaur digs as the previous book did. I enjoyed the characters in this story and the struggle that Martha went through in discovering her faith. I think that the mismatched faith would be more concerning for Jacob however I can see how finding a woman who loves paleontology as Martha did in this period might be a rare thing. Having common interests and a spark of romance can distract from being yoked in faith. Jacob struggles with this towards the end as he realizes Martha's faith may not be founded in God’s grace. I think Jacob did a great job navigating the confrentation of this in he and Marthas relationship. He was gentle and tactful in sharing the gospel but emphasizing his own sin as well as hers needing God’s mercy through Jesus. Just as the last book had me guessing until the end who was deviously causing rukus in this story too had me hooked until the end.

Quotes: “Prejudice of any kind wasn’t honoring to God. All right, Lord, please help me to guard my thoughts and mind while I’m at work.”

“The people around, the opinions and words they said, the culture, the attitudes. All of it had an effect. He couldn’t allow that to happen though. As a follower of Christ, he had a higher calling. To be transformed- not conformed to the world. And that was probably one of the greatest struggles man faced. It was easy to get caught up in the quest for money or accolades.”

“Two people sholud be allowed to converse on a mutually agreeable subject. Regardless of social station.”

“My fears were not from the Lord. And holding tightly to them wasn’t helping anyone. You are in your Heavenly Father's hands, and I pray that He uses you in your beloved science.”

“Each trial seemed to be worse than the one before. And though he didn’t always understand the ways of the Lord, he needed to trust Jesus. Trust His Word... ‘But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are troubles on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsake; cast down, but not destroyed.’”

“’ But to love someone means forgiving when it hurts, believing the best about the other, and holding each other to what the Bible says.’”

I love this Treasures of the Earth series! It is so interesting to read about these leading women paleontologists. There is history, a little bit of mystery, light romance and a lesson to be learned in these stories. Martha's family has been a part of paleontology but after her father has a terrible accident he changes, her life changes and digging is no longer talked about in the household. When Martha becomes of age, she can hardly believe that her dream of walking in her fathers footsteps has been approved by her mother and now she is in charge of one of the largest digs. But everything is put on the line when she is given a deadline and put up against another very large dig site for the chance to win an exhibit in the museum with her name on it. There are strict rules to be followed and Martha only works aboveboard and will do all it can to prove herself and her team. It seems though all is against her when one thing after another continues to hinder their progress and as the deadline looms even stranger events happen that pull her away from the site. Working to keep her faith and yet untangle truth from lies from those she cares about, Martha is truly tested. With a shocking unraveling of a scheme long in the making, the person she has been pushing away just might be the only one she can trust. Thank you to the publisher and author for the complementary ebook and for allowing me to be a part of the launch team. This review is of my own opinion and accord. I look forward to the next one in the series.

“But what good is it having dreams if they aren’t big?”

Woo-Hoo, Set in Stone, book two of Treasures in the Earth, by Kimberley Woodhouse, releases March 12! I absolutely love this series by Kimberley Woodhouse!

Set in Stone is just as exciting and suspenseful as its predecessor, The Secrets Beneath. Both involve a woman archaeologist, history, romance, and mystery. Set in Stone, as Secrets Beneath, can be a stand-alone.

This is a heart-wrenching story, at least for any daddy’s girl, of which I was one. Young Martha Jankowski is also one, idolizing her father, loving any time at home with him, and ecstatic when her archaeologist father lets her start “working”with him on a dig at age 6. But shortly after that, her parents return home from a trip, with her father maimed, unable to work any more, and greatly changed.

Unable to get her social-rule-conscious mother to show any love or approval, Martha hopes as an adult, by working her own dig, to gain her parents’ approval.

We meet Jacob Duncan working on an opposing dig, as the powers that be have pitted two digs against each other for dinosaur bones and speed. This is part of the Bone Wars that took place during that time, leading to sloppy practices, carelessness, and greed in a field demanding meticulous care. It is interesting to see how Woodhouse introduces Jacob and Martha to each other and how their lives become entangled both in matters of work and the heart.

If that were the only storyline present, Set in Stone would be interesting. But Woodhouse takes her novel a step above to “ominously mysterious” with the mystery over Martha’s father’s personality change and the invisible, ruthless owner of the other mine.

I loved the growth in the two main characters. The spiritual insights are as relevant for the reader as they are for the protagonists.

Don’t miss this exciting, mysterious second book in the Treasures of the Earth series.

Notable Quotables:

My high expectations for this second book in the Treasures of the Earth series were met and exceeded! The story is set in the late 1800s in Colorado with the world of the Great Dinosaur Rush as a backdrop. The plot—skillfully crafted with action, suspense, romance, and faith--kept me immersed in the story from beginning to end. I guessed early on who the duplicitous villain was, but that did not distract from the enjoyment of the read. As always, the author excels in bringing alive her compelling cast of characters. I love Jacob and the way he stands by his faith despite accusations and even physical harm. I had ambivalent feelings toward the heroine Martha but enjoyed and appreciated her spiritual journey. I love the way their sweet romantic relationship develops with all its ups and downs. The historical detail woven into the fictional narrative is entertaining as well and informative evidencing extensive and impeccable research. If you are looking for an enthralling, faith-filled read, I highly recommend this one. Note: Each book in the series is a standalone read.

Women in science is commonplace enough these days that it is a struggle to imagine the days when a woman digging for dinosaur fossils was considered inappropriate. That’s the period where this story unfolds. How much more difficult must it have been for a woman of society? That’s exactly where our heroine, Martha, finds herself. She does her best to hold her own as she oversees her own dig, but things keep happening. Things that point to someone close to her being untrustworthy and even dangerous. While she struggles with her heart and her faith, the world around her seems to unravel.
As usual, I was riveted! As the plot twisted and revealed certain secrets, I was on the edge of my seat trying to predict the ending. Another AMAZING book from Woodhouse and a great second book for this series. I’m very glad to have received a copy of this book.

Kimberley Woodhouse has done it again - Set in Stone is a beautiful story of faith, love, and trust set against the backdrop of the Bone Wars in the 19th century.

Martha Jankowski is a society woman who is on the verge of changing her life - by finding an intact dinosaur skeleton. Jacob Duncan is a poor man from Chicago who wants nothing more than to be a paleontologist and share his face in the world of science.

These two meet and not only do the sparks fly, but the challenges between them and against them start right away. I love that Martha is nominal in her faith at best at the beginning of the book, but through Jacob's humble and honest witness and encouragement... she starts to desire to know Jesus more... and sees how her faith feeds her work in the field in paleontology.

Jacob has his own trials and wrestles... has God really called him to work in the field of science? How can he show the men he works with the love of God? And is he really willing to pay the price of what it means to follow Jesus when no one will listen?

On top of all these wonderful themes, there is a mysterious villain on the loose who will stop at nothing to see these dinosaur digs sabotaged along the way... including murder.

Set in Stone is a wonderful addition to the Treasures of the Earth series. It can be read alone, but I encourage any reader to read The Secrets Beneath as well - and learn more about this incredible and challenging time the faith and science communities.

I was just as enthralled by book two in The Treasures Of The Earth series as I was with book one. Each book is a standalone but I highly recommend not missing out on being glued to your seat as you quickly turn pages. I love the science lessons on paleontology and what tedious work it is to excavate a site. I can’t imagine the patience it would entail especially during the dinosaur wars which upped the ante to finish quickly without rushing and causing unrepairable damage. The dangerous mystery contained within the pages had me flip flopping in my guess of who it was but I was able to figure out after a while. The author does a great job of keeping you guessing and trying to figure out why. It was shocking to learn the extent of it. I enjoyed reading the quotes from Earl Douglas before each chapter. I found the characters believable and loved the Faith thread that was woven throughout. The romance was tender and brought everything together with a satisfying ending. A very impressive read that leaves you with a feeling of wanting to read more. I highly recommend reading.

Set in Stone by Kimberley Woodhouse is the second book in the Treasures of the Earth series. This exciting look at the Bone Wars will keep you reading well into the night.

This well-crafted book takes the reader deep into the beginnings of the Bone Wars and what serious paleontologists had to deal with as they pursued their dreams of digging up a dinosaur. In this fictional account, we meet Martha Jankowski, who has always dreamed of being a paleontologist like her father. When she finds a fully intact dinosaur, it becomes a race against time to dig it up before another team digs up their dinosaur first.

This novel offers a bit of everything. Detailed research into paleontology and the early beginnings of The Bone Wars, romance, and a murder/mystery that had me guessing until the very end of the book.

With romance and a strong faith element, this book was hard to put down. I loved that there was a clear message about how to know the Lord. It was interesting to see Martha grow in her faith and Jacob's patience with her while he waited for her to trust God and him.

If you have not read the first book, The Secrets Beneath, don't worry, as this is a standalone book. Although I highly recommend you read the first one!

If you love historical fiction with a wonderful "who-dunnit," you will enjoy Set in Stone.

I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Bethany House through NetGalley for my honest review.

As always, another win-win from Kimberley Woodhouse.
I've really enjoyed this series so far. I can't wait to see the third book. I hope there is one!
Martha is a wonderful character, and I loved her journey. In my opinion, she's a woman before her time.
This an awesome adventure that you won't be able to put down. I loved every minute of it.
My favorite thing was the mystery part. I really loved the guessing who done it. I was actually quite surprised in who it actually was!
Woodhouse excelled in that.
The science lesson was done very well too. I feel like I've learned quite a bit.
There are some beautiful Christian messages throughout this novel that I loved. Wonderful reminders for me and other readers as well.
God is an awesome God.
5 stars for a job well done! I highly recommend.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

That is an actual record of my reaction to a particular twist in Set in Stone. One that took me by surprise (clearly) and one that I thought was brilliantly done by the author. I had my suspicions about how the suspense thread would turn out, and while I was partially correct about some of it I didn’t see the rest of it coming. Kimberley Woodhouse writes great historical romance – this is fact. But she also writes brilliant suspense, and I love that we get to see both talents showcased in this new series.

Martha and Jacob are both layered characters who come from two very different worlds. And while at first glance, Martha seems to have the kind of upbringing where she wanted for nothing, in truth it’s working class Jacob who is rich in what really matters. I appreciated the contrast between them and how the author integrated it into several of the story threads so we were shown the differences & not just told. I also loved Jacob’s character, from his personality to his integrity, his deep relationship with God, his growing feelings for Martha and even his connection to Dwight L. Moody. My heart broke for Martha in her acute lack of close relationships or anyone to share her burdens, and I found her subsequent journey toward a relationship with Jesus to be heartfelt and authentic. Even the places in her story where we can see Him pursuing her long before she realizes that He loves her deeply.

Bottom Line: In Set in Stone, Kimberley Woodhouse takes us to the height of the Bone Wars and puts us right in the middle of a high-stakes competition between rival digs. Readers will quickly become invested in Martha’s backstory and her present quest for a significant dinosaur skeleton, and they will of course fall in love with Jacob as she does. Drama abounds between the two digs, but it’s the truly complex villain that will keep you on the edge of your seat and biting your nails! A sweet romance (though I wish there had been a little more kissing haha #shallow), a touching faith journey, and some shocking twists round out the mix, and I already cannot wait for the next book!

Set in Stone by Kimberley Woodhouse is a mystery historical novel. I really loved the mystery element that Woodhouse threw into the story. I love the concept of digging up dinosaurs bones as a competition. I love the setting and the Bone Wars - era story. Totally original and unique storyline. One of the issues I had with the plot is that in the beginning, the heroine, Martha, was told that she could not dig for bones anymore, then jump a head a couple of years, and she is on a dig. I want to know what happened that made her parents change their minds. It would have been nice to see that conversation where they allowed her to do the digging, but then give the stipulations of how and why she can. On the other hand, the romance between Martha and Jacob Duncan were a wealthy girl to a poor man love story. Forbidden, yet adventurous at the same time. I love seeing the heart of the two characters, however, the romance did develop a little bit over time. Many moments of indecision as they struggle with should they be feeling this way or not. Overall, Set in Stone by Kimberley Woodhouse is a delightful story that has not been seen before. I love learning about characters that uncover historical items or animals, in this story. I great story to spend time with.

I received a complimentary copy of Set in Stone by Kimberley Woodhouse from Bethany House Publishers, but the opinions stated are all my own.

I have come to look forward to reading Kimberley's books. Before starting this one, I realized I hadn't read the first and of course I had to read it first (even though they really are stand alone books). Well, the first one was really good, but this one gave me even more. I have never read a book particularly on this little corner of historical fiction, but it was entertaining, informative and interesting.

Martha is a strong main character, but like us all still has her insecurities. She is determined to follow her dreams of leading a paleontology dig and find a way to connect with and show her family they can be proud of her. Jacob is humble, but strong and I loved his respect throughout for Martha and how he showed her the love of Christ in many ways. There was mystery, intrigue and a villain. I mean what more could you want? There is a tone of evil from the villain that slightly makes you shudder. I kept thinking I knew who the "bad guy" was from about a third of the way through the book, but then second guessed myself and then second guessed again. I really didn't figure it out until it was there at the end, and boy was there not one, but two shocks. I really kept just wanting to read to figure out what was going to happen and how it would end. There will be another one. There has to be. And I'm anxious to see how this story will fold into another one to come to a conclusion, that I was not granted by finishing this book. Well done. Now I have to wait...

Set in Stone was an absolutely gripping and well-written historical suspense read!! I loved it and highly recommend it! The romance in it was perfectly done, and squeaky clean. <3

Kudos to the author on a fabulous story!

Thanks to Bethany House Publishers for the complimentary e-book my brother recieved to review. He requested I read it first before he did, and it was my honor to review it as well. I was not required to write a review, but did so of my own will, and the thoughts above are my own.

I’m really enjoying this paleontology series. Kimberley Woodhouse has taken a topic I normally find boring and has made it so fascinating to me. While I know this was brought out in the first book, with this second book the concerns many believers had that studying science would discredit the Bible really stood out to me. I had never really paid attention to the fact that this was a very real concern due in part to Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species. Yet science has proven time and time again that this world has a masterful creator. The unchangeable laws and designs of science point to God who created all things.

I really liked Jacob. Especially his passion to show that science is of God and his very clear walk with the Lord. But Martha definitely had some growing to do. At times I found her stubbornness and even her haughtiness to be a bit frustrating. Then I saw another reviewer point out that it was that stubbornness that drove her to find the answers she sought in scripture. Which then got me pondering how our weaknesses can be channeled to be strengths. And through her study of Scripture, Martha saw areas in where the Lord would have her grow.

Set in Stone is book two in the Treasures of the Earth series. While this is a series, they are also great stand alone stories. This one focuses on Martha and her father's love of being paleontologists. Martha and another man are in a rush to provide a full skeleton to a museum. The first one to do so will have theirs displayed. This story is filled with action, suspense and mystery, yet it has the touch of romance.. It is so well written and very descriptive, it was easy for me to imagine. I especially enjoyed the information the author gives about the digs. I found this story so enjoyable in so many ways. I enjoyed how freely Jacob shared his faith, the mystery behind Martha's parents, and the strength and dedication Martha has for the dig. I was left guessing to the end of the story as to who is causing the troubles with the digs and why.

You know how you want to slow down your reading and drag a good book out to make it last longer? But you still aren't sure exactly what's going to happen or how, so you just really want to finish it? That's Set in Stone. In fact, I'm writing this paragraph now in order to make the final 40 pages last longer. I have my suspicions, but nothing sure, plus something just happened, so there's more coming, and I don't want it to end, but I NEED TO KNOW!!!

Read about 15 more pages. Had to stop again to make it last...things are coming to fruition!

Down to 16 pages left. I don't want this to end! But I need it to! What a dilemma Kimberley Woodhouse has put me in!

And, finished. What. A. Book!! If you, too, want to be pulled in 2 different directions, grab it!

Thank you to @kimberleywoodhouse @netgalley and @bethanyhouse for this #gifted book!

Synopsis: “Someday, Mr. Johnson, I will find a dinosaur…And when I find it, it will go in a beautiful museum. My name will be on the plaque right next to it. ‘Martha Jankowski, Paleontologist.’“ Martha Jankowski has dreamed of digging in the dirt for years. When she is finally given the opportunity to lead her own dinosaur dig, she is eager to win the spot for her family and her future. But another team also races to claim her spot. When one charming young man comes to her team, the two strike up an unlikely friendship and strange things begin to happen. As the deadline for the dig approaches, her work is compromised, her heart is hurt, and her idea of faith is deeply questioned. Can love and occupation work together? Can science and faith coexist? What will it truly take to find success and meaning in the Bone Wars?

Analysis: Kimberley Woodhouse brings us this beautiful Bone War era novel that I must say I was super excited to read (being a boy mom and dinosaurs just go hand in hand these days!). There were so many things that I loved about this novel: creepy villains, jaw-dropping mystery, unlikely romance, and a genuine, clear gospel message. While this book is technically the second in the series, this is written as stand-alone. If you’re looking for a book with little known history, beautiful writing, and strong threads of faith, you’ll want to add this to your TBR immediately!

Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
