** spoiler alert ** SPOILERS IN MY REVIEW! I'M SORRY ABOUT SPOILING IT FOR PEOPLE, REALLY I AM, IT WAS NEVER INTENTIONAL. BUT AS WITH ALL REVIEWS (ESPECIALLY MINE) THERE ARE GOING TO BE SPOILERS. I DELETED ALL THE COMMENTS THAT WERE HARASSING ME ABOUT ACCIDENTLY SPOILING THE BOOK. SERIOUSLY, I'M SORRY, BUT PEOPLE DON'T NEED TO BE COMPLETE AND UTTER ASSHOLES ABOUT IT. NOT EVERYONE, TO THOSE OF YOU WHO WERE NICE, I REALLY AM SORRY THAT I SPOILED THE BOOK. I FORGET THAT GOODREADS DOESN'T HAVE A WAY OF HIDING SPOILERS... THEY SHOULD. IF I COULD GIVE YOU A COOKIE TO MAKEUP FOR THE FACT THAT I GAVE AWAY SOME STUFF. GOOD READS OBVIOUSLY DELETED MY FIRST REVIEW, BUT THIS IS THE SAME EXACT THING I HAD WRITTEN BEFORE... SO ONCE AGAIN, DON'T READ THE NON-CAPSLOCKED STUFF BELOW THIS BECAUSE IT DOES CONTAIN SPOILERS. SO IF YOU LEAVE ME A COMMENT THIS TIME AROUND BITCHING ABOUT SPOILERS YOU ONLY HAVE YOURSELF TO BITCH AT BECAUSE I FRIGGIN' WARNED YOU. AND JUST FOR THE RECORD: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS!

I could not put this book down. I disagree with the statement that the ending was predictable. On the contrary I was pleasantly surprised that Jacob and Marlena ended up together because I thought the book was going to follow the format of those "never meant to be" loves. You know, where they hook up, yearn for each other, but can't grow old together.

I think the biggest disappointment I had with the book was Marlena's relative weakness. I think I would have loved the book even more had she been written as a stronger woman. Though I think her nature reflected that of most women back in the 30s. Still, I got annoyed by the frequent crying she did. I was proud of her for standing up to August in the end. Even so, Marlena's weakness didn't stop me from loving the book.

What drew me in the most was our flash forwards to 93-year-old (or is it 90?) Jacob. With the exception of his grouchiness everything about him reminded me of my grandfather, who past away last Thanksgiving at 97. It was the fact that he was failing physically but was holding on strong mentally that kept making me think of this man I admired so much. Also, Jacob's undying love for his wife was extremely remeniscent of my grandfather's relationship with my grandmother. If you have elderly loved ones this is just another reason for you to pick up this book. It will probably make you want to call up said loved one and talk to them about their past and their memories. Hopefully it will also strike a note to those who have ignored/forgotten/set aside their loved ones for so long, as Jacob's family has done with him.

Animal lovers beware with this book. As much as Jacob loves and has a passion for the animals he cares for, there is also a lot of animal abuse that takes place throughout the novel. Being a huge animal rights activist and just all around animal lover, I knew that the animals probably weren't going to be treated very well seeing as 70 years ago animals in the circus were only taken care of as long as they were bringing in a profit, even then... But despite having prepared myself, I was still caught of guard often. So just know that upon picking up this book. The happy animal moments do outweigh the cruelty, though, and if you know animal behavior at all you'll find yourself giggling and cheering quite a bit.

On a final note, this book is being praised as a romance novel, but it's so much more than that. There are so many layers and characters in this book that to shove it in that one exclusive category could turn away a lot of potential readers who will love this book. If you're a lover of animals, the elderly, adventure, circuses, the Great Depression, or even drunks, pick up this book and you'll find yourself hooked.

Wes Ahhh ha ha ha, your so spoiled...

Lisa Todd its ok honey! but maybe you shouldnt shout it... ;)
is your icon reflective of your sorriness? you look upset :(

Rachel M. Why do people read in-depth reviews if they don't want to be spoiled? :/

I'm sorry people were mean to you.

Jami Great review, I agree with your opinion about the book.

message 5: by Sue (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sue Seely Well, you just made me laugh! GREAT comments! And i'm wondering where you might be handing out cookies???? ;-)

Lindsey umm, actually goodreads does have a way of hiding spoilers! maybe it's a new feature, but when you add the review just check that it has spoilers and then it will be hidden to those who don't want to see it!

Wendy I loved this book too, so who can blame you?

Cindy I loved this book and people shouldn't be mean to anyone here! Stop reading the reviews if you don't want to possibly see spoilers! Geez!

message 9: by Mia (last edited Jul 03, 2008 08:04PM) (new)

Mia Tryst I love spoilers. I'm one of those people who likes to read the end of the book and make sure it's worth reading all the way through. I also like to read spoilers in movie reviews and fast forward through a film if the first part is slow.

I don't like wasting my time on stupid books; just because they made it on the New York Times Bestseller lists doesn't mean that the book/writing is any good. You're doing me a favor by writing up a book review with spoilers. Thanks, keep up the good work.

message 10: by Casey (new)

Casey I always write these reviews for myself, really, so I can remember what I thought about the books I read. I used to write it all in a notebook, but Goodreads makes it easier. People are always yelling at me, too. I wouldn't feel too bad.

message 11: by Cloie (new)

Cloie people are assholes. don't worry. a review is a review, it's going to color things no matter what. you are fine and we appreciate you......

Katie Do you know that typing in all caps online is SCREAMING?!

Katharine (Ventureadlaxre) I think they're mad at you because when you write a review, you can tick a box that says 'there are spoilers in my review'... so you probably should have ticked that.

People can be over the top when insulting though. Maybe you can edit your review to just being the review again now, if you've deleted all the bad comments. Like the above poster said, ALL CAPS IS SCREAMING.

Kudos on reading The Mists of Avalon though. Great book.

message 14: by Lori (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lori I read reviews to determine whether a book was well receieved among the masses (not that I use that as a 'great weight', but I still like to know what people thought).

Reviews do not need to contain spoilers. You can talk about the book without giving away important plot information. Perhaps it's an art form? Though I doubt it.

I,for one, do not like to be spoiled on a book that I want to read. Would I bash the person for doing so? Perhaps not, but I would definetly let them hear about it and inform them of how to block their reviews for future novels.

However, beware the wrath of other loyal bookaholics.....

message 15: by Cyd (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cyd I liked your review.

message 16: by Eva (new) - rated it 2 stars

Eva Celeste Just to reiterate...you can click a box at the bottom of your review that says "This review contains spoilers" and Goodreads will hide the text of your review and warn people.

That said, I'm sorry people were rude to you regarding this issue. I have twice inadvertently put "spoilers" in amazon.com reviews and got some snarky jabs myself. Oops, they can get over it. You live, you learn, I won't do it again. Geez, people.

Deidre If you don't want to know what happens at the end of a certain book...don't even risk it by reading the reviews!!!!! It's not rocket science people! I like reading reviews so I have some sort of an idea if I will like a book or not. Sometimes I read spoilers and sometimes I don't. If I come accross spoilers that I don't want to read...I simply stop reading them! It's just too easy! By the way, I liked this review. I thought "Water for Elephants" was great.

Jasmine There is actually a way to say if your review has spoilers, you just have to check the box that says "this review contains spoilers" on the same page as you write the review. :) Just letting you know.

Rachael I tend to only read Goodreads reviews of books I've already read, as it's nice to see if other people felt the same way about a book, or if there is something interesting worth discussing about it.

Marcy Reiz I haven't read your review because I'm reading this wonderful book now and I don't want to spoil it :o)
But, I just wanted to (nicely) let you know that goodreads does have a way to let people know that there are spoilers in your review, however, I think that by clicking "this review contains spoilers" it may block your review from being read by others....
hope this helps :o)

message 21: by Jeff (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jeff Steward On target review. I felt the same about Marlena could have been stronger. There were plenty of women in the 30s who were, but then again there were plenty of women who were not. She certainly would not be the first woman (or man) taken in by a charmer at a young age. -- Spoiler of my own -- I figure out about when Rosie was stealing the lemonade she was the one who crushed August, so I think it WAS a bit predictable. And the mention of all of the kids made it a bit of cinch that they would wind up together. Spite that it was a good book that I went through in a couple of days. That's saying something since most books wind up laying on the table for a few days with my bookmark somewhere around the mid-mark. Two thumbs up to the book and your review.

Sadie I loved the twist at the end. Call me clueless but I had NO IDEA that it was Rosie who killed August...I though it was going to be Marlena (sorry about the Spoiler). I was so mad at Jacob though when he was in the nursing home and he didn't tell anyone that he had actually worked in a circus though I can understand why he didn't...a lot of painful memories. I felt the end was very funny when he ran away with the circus all over again. How ironic. Two foam fingers up to Ms.Gruen...keep writing!!

message 23: by Megan (new)

Megan LOL. love your review. People are mean, huh? There are too many jerks in this world.

message 24: by Lisa (new) - rated it 3 stars

Lisa Loved your review!! Thanks.

Meghan I like your review and those people are idiots to say you ruined the book for them. great job!

message 26: by Carol (new) - added it

Carol Neman Sammy, I've seen this book on the '50 Books a Year' thread for quite some time, and I have to say that your review was the first one that made me actually want to read the thing. So it goes on my TBR list, which must be at least a million strong by now.

Nancy amazing review!!! I dont see a way you could have ruined the book.I read it and I love it but Iam with you on the part of Marlena's weakness.

message 28: by Carol (new) - added it

Carol Neman I just re-read all the comments (I guess this new one of mine is #28) and I counted at least 5 or 6 mentions of how to identify and mark 'spoilers', and/or the NEED to do so. I guess people only read what's visible on the screen and don't bother to go back aways to see if the problem has been addressed already...

Kayla Quay Yeah, I really enjoyed this book too! And I just wanted to say that in Australia (don't know id thats where ur from or not) animal cruelty is a strict no! I have lived and worked in my uncle's circus and i know how hard it is to try and get the rights for any kind of animal. mainly due to people saying they are mistreated. They aren't. I have friends who own a circus that is the only one in Australia that still has lions. They arent mistreated in ANY way. I'm not having a go at anyone, id just like to put that out there lol

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

I really don't think your review contained any spoilers.

Ashley I wish your review contained MORE spoilers LOL I am horrible when reading CERTAIN books. Some books I don't want to know anything, and others I will DIG AND DIG until I can find out as much as possible BEFORE I read it. Thank you so much for the review :)

message 32: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 14, 2011 02:52PM) (new)

I know! some books I want to know what happens BEFORE I read it. like with this book. lol, thanks.

message 33: by Carol (new) - added it

Carol Neman That's where skimming comes in handy. A good skimmer can save their weight in time...and avert disaster to your nervous system by keeping out bad karma.

Ashley Olivia- I AM GLAD I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE!! ha ha

Carol- Man you have a gift. I am a horrible skimmer. I get sucked in once I start reading.

See- with this book, I really want someone to sit down with me and tell me the whole thing. I really REALLY want to read it, but I want to know more before I do. First off- Animal cruelty bothers me in an EXTREME way, and first comment about that I was worried. And I need to know its happy and no animals die. LOL

Also...(and this is about the movie) the whole Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson together... is kinda buggin me. Not sure why. I love them both. But together??? She is like 10 years older than him. I dont' know. Maybe I am just weird.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

It does seem strange. I think (I would if I were her) Kirsten Stewert flew up to where they're filming because... you know.
Also, I love them both too! but together? ehhh...

Ashley ha ha - well if I were Rob, I would FOR SURE CHOOSE REESE OVER KIRSTEN! thats funny.
I am just excited for this book and the movie. All of it. It looks brillant.

message 37: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 14, 2011 05:41PM) (new)

Yeah Reese way prettier then Kirsten. Don't tell her I said that! *wink*
Now that I think about it, if you get Kirsten out of the picture... they DO look good together. yeah I can see it!! Sorry Kirsten, you're not his Bella anymore! (maybe is Reese died her hair brown, she could be Bella!) ;) Yay!! (also don't tell that to some serious Kirsten Stewert/Bella fans)

Chelsea I agree with everything you said. I loved the book but found some parts were kind of hard to get through because of the abuse. I also didn't think it was predictable like some of the other reviews stated. I'm not looking forward to seeing the movie; I'm always disappointed.

Colleen I never read reviews of a book on Goodreads before I actually read the book. I want to have my own impressions of the book, not be colored by someone else's opinions. Nor do I want to have anything revealed to me. For that same reason, I don't read introductions to books until after I'm finished. Maybe I'm good at reading between the lines or something but I always find that important information is inadvertently given away. That's sometimes even true of reviews printed on the back or inside of the actual book. This is a long way of saying, if you don't want to be "spoiled" ahead of time, just read the damn book first and not all the other crap!

message 40: by Cyd (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cyd Nicely said Colleen! I have learned to wait'til I'm done with the book to see what everyone has to say, much better for me.

Mandy Reading this review actually made me download the book for my Kindle. Thank you for writing a great review.

Onur Karadağ Great review

message 43: by Jayme (new) - added it

Jayme Sounds like a great book! :))

message 44: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa I liked your review and did not feel "spoiled" at all :) I agree there are a LOT of critical people on here and that can make it a tad hostile at times. I don't completely agree with the view of Marlena being weak however; the way i saw it, she was young, scared, and out of options. The fact that she tried to accept her situation and didn't stand up for herself is more of a reflection of the times than her character. Remember this is the 30's, she is 24, a female, alone, and disowned by her family. What other option did she have? In this time, husbands ruled all, and without a man you would probably end up in the cooch tent regardless of your talent. This was apparent when she did finally try to leave august and uncle al chose to back august instead of her. Had the stampede not happened or Jacob been there to protect her, she would have been beaten into submission I am afraid - the show must go on after all. As for the comment of her crying all the time, I got the impression that until Jacob showed up, she didn't cry at all, but once she saw what happiness would look like and she had someone who WOULD hear her, she was saddened by her choices and finally let herself trust someone. Just my opinion, but having seen abuse first hand and how it makes even strong people cower, it is easy to say "they should have been stronger" even In the 21st century.

message 45: by Jayme (new) - added it

Jayme Awesome review! I couldn't have said it better myself! I liked the way and words u chose for this review! It can get almost anyone reading the book right now!!! :)

Lydia LaPutka I LOVED your venting about the spoiling. That made me laugh out loud and instantly want to have you as a friend on Goodreads!!! The reviews are all over the place with 1 - 5 stars. I gave it 5 like you and wanted to hear what other fans had to say. Thanks for your review!!!

Marcy Reiz So I just actually read your review in it's entirety now (goodreads told me someone had commented on it) and I really don't think your review had spoilers in it. you didn't give away the plot, and anyone who picks up the book and reads the first two chapters can see the flash forwards/backs that are going to happen. You made a statement about a character, that doesn't make your review a spoiler! I want to yell at the person who said your review was a spoiler. On a side note, I also loved your vent about spoiling. Any real review is going to reveal a little something and I love your review!

Chrissy I loved the all caps paragraph, I actually did laugh out loud. :-)

Don't worry, some people are just plain dumbasses. Your review didn't have any spoilers that I could see. As someone else mentioned within the first few pages it does the whole going back in time type of thing with the main character.

You know the old saying, "opinions are like assholes and everyone has one." Just take their views with a grain of salt as that's what you have to do when you are reading comments from others that are rude to you.....it's often easier for them to be mean online and in person they're the type that wouldn't say boo.
