The girl is so amazing it makes every other girl feel like they are doing it wrong. Doing what wrong? Everything. (Spoiler alert: she’s not that great actually and I have no idea why everybody wants to get in her pants so badly). I don’t feel any connection with The Queen of Everything so I’m kind of hoping she’ll wander off somewhere and we’ll never hear about her again. A few of the side characters are so much more interesting.
Everybody is walking around with full time erections or slick folds and get horny at the most ridiculous times (We’re being chased, but here, lemme press my boner into your ass for no reason at all!). All. The. Friggin’. Time. If there’s one way to kill the mood it’s to having it turned up to 11 for an entire book. It’s exhausting and terribly unsexy.
I don’t get what’s so special about Warwick aside from being sex on a stick. He doesn’t have (or shows) a lot of personality and only has his massive (everything about him is MASSIVE) presence everybody is graced with going for him. He’s big, he’s sculpted, he’s hot and did I mention massive?
I also didn’t enjoy the fact that absolutely nothing gets explained in this book, not even a tiny little bit of intriguing info, so I don’t know if I want to know more or if this is like that series Lost, where we all stopped caring because nothing ever got explained or resolved?...more

The beginning was very exciting and a lot of fun to read, I also liked the ending but the middle part was mostly boring or maybe too long, I don't know. It could just be me because I didn't really care what was happening to the characters I was following around.
(view spoiler)[The book suddenly jumped about +90 years into the future and I only cared about a few of the new characters. Most of them were boring or people I really disliked. I was really glad when the few people I did care about left The Colony because that's when the story picked up again (hide spoiler)]
I'm going to read the rest of the trilogy as well and then give the TV show a shot.

This was a pretty intense read. The writing style did a great job of really building up the tension and fear. There is nothing scarier than what we cannot see and I think this book certainly made me experience this along with the characters.
However. I have a few questions...
(view spoiler)[Why didn’t the creatures attack people but only stand there, doing something that makes everybody go crazy when people see... well, I don’t know what. I feel like all they do is stand around, waiting for somebody to open their eyes so they can work their magic. Why aren't people forced to open their eyes, it's not that hard. Why aren’t things explained? What happened to the world and where did "they" come from and why? Why didn’t they get killed by the crazy man on the river? He had the chance, and with 3 blindfolded people in a boat it couldn't have been that hard to catch them. And how was that man still alive after 4 years? Everybody (animals included) went mad and started killing, and after that they killed themselves. Why didn’t her own dog kill her when he went mad? Why didn’t the wolves get them? I feel like the main charachter and her kids could have died so many times but always easily got away from every type of danger surrounding them (while being on the boat and as well in the flashbacks). And I could keep going but those things really killed the realism (yes, I know I’m reading fiction, thanks) or at least the realistic feel of the book. The fun in distopian books is that it could happen (although this one is a little farfetched of course) The truth is nobody could do what the characters did while wearing a blindfold constantly. (hide spoiler)]
But those things didn’t take away my general enjoyment of the book. I was scared and this book made me feel very uneasy and anxious. But I wanted a little bit more....more

I was on the edge of my seat a few times and I'm looking forward to the next book. At the beginning I honestly had no idea what was happening and the thought of just giving up did cross my mind. But about 1/3 into the book I felt like I was getting somewhere and from then on it was straight to the finish line. Sometimes I think it's because English isn't my first language, but things can get so confusing when I'm reading a book and this was no exception.
At one point something happened that crushed me and I hated AIDEN's digital guts most of the time but the ending made me change my mind completely. Can't wait to start the next one!...more

I’m on a mission to read trilogies that have been on my tbr for far too long (and I need to clear some shelf space) and this seemed like a good place to start.

Edit: I read this again in December 2013, to prepare myself for the next one, and I really do still love love love it :)
MAN, I loved this! I can't believe I waited this long to read this thing (all the reviews my friends posted should have made it clear, don't you think?) and I'm so happy I finally did!
A broken world, filled with uncertainty, death and doom lurking around every corner.... Awesome! -fist pump-
Although it's something similar but very different, I couldn't help but be reminded of Dark Angel. I used to love that show (watch it if you can pretend to be oblivious to Miss Alba's amazing acting skills (yes, that was sarcasm, kids!)) We rely so very much on electricity and the safety of our own homes... Just imagining living in a broken down world is already scary enough. Seriously, think about it.
I could never stomach this if this ever got turned into a movie. There a lot of gore involved and I don't think there is a single scene where there isn't somebody who is bleeding (Raffe mostly).
I can't help but like Penryn. Looks like she had a hard life and things aren't exactly getting any easier. She is a bit slow on the uptake, I mean an angel with that kind of introduction who tells her his name is Raffe? I'm not into religion, but that probably would have been my first question. I just feel so bad about his wings, and his sword :( Gah, poor baby.
One thing did bother me though: the world broke down about 6 weeks ago, and it's too big of a wreck to be believable. I think more time should have passed for things to get that bad, but I can understand why it was written that way... I just hope certain things will be clarified once we get to read the next book. (can't wait! ♥ )...more
In less than a day, the world dies, when it gets taken over by zombies. Yes, zombies. The idea alone I absolutely loved this book. Love, love love it.
In less than a day, the world dies, when it gets taken over by zombies. Yes, zombies. The idea alone made me laugh as well. Until I read this book. My smile faded pretty quickly.
This is the story of two different women, who come from different worlds, who somehow manage to from a bond that runs deeper than blood. Together, they are stronger, smarter, and better. I feel about as fiercely protective of Katie and Jenni as they do of each other, despite their many flaws (god, I love flaws).
I've been on the edge of my seat for this entire book, a constant roller coaster of emotions. I felt scared, anxious, nervous, relieved, happy, thrilled, angry, sad, everything. This book exhausted me emotionally and I can honestly say there isn't a single dull moment within these pages. Not one!
This is not for the fainthearted. Heads get blown of, intestines are used as accessories, rotting flesh, walking undead,... Full on zombie shit. The author does not gloss over it and it fits the story perfectly.
The characters felt very real. They react the way humans are supposed to, by making selfish decisions, as well as very brave ones. Relationships get built fast, but in a way that can only happen in exceptionally extreme situations.
What surprised me the most was a scene near the end of this book. The zombies crave the flesh of the living, and will stop at nothing to get it. They are mindless killing machines, who try to get to their goal, whatever the cost. And still, that idea is less horrible, less horrifying, and less disgusting than what a few surviving humans did. It made me sick to my stomach, and that's saying something, if you've been up to your elbows in intestines. I won't say more about it, because I want you to experience this yourself.
I recommend this book to everybody. Yes, it's gory, yes there are some pretty disgusting things going on here, but this is a really good story. Please, just read this....more

CleI don't know why I waited so long to read this book. Maybe it's because of the ugly cover. (I'm sorry, I don't like it, but it's just an opinion). Clearly a case of "never judge a book..."
What was inside surprised me. It's been a week and I'm still thinking about the content. I keep trying to find something thoughtful to say, or something deep, but nothing seems to come to mind.

The most difficult reviews to write are about the books I liked. This is no different. I mean, what is there to say? So much and yet so little.
I've been spending months and months without reading a single page, feeling no need to read. My Kindle was feeling sad and lonely, constantly giving me those "don't you love me anymore?" looks and to be honest, it only made me feel worse. But my good(reads) friends managed to change that for me by recommending me this book. I loved every page of it :) and I'm really glad it helped me rediscover how passionate I am about books.
I'll be honest and tell you that for some parts of this book, I had no idea what was going on, or at least that's how it seemed. I feel like I understood nothing, and yet I adore this book, I don't know how that happened. (I can't explain it any better than this, and I do realize that what I am saying is pretty confusing too)
I could rant a little bit about how I don't really understand what makes Retra/Naif so special that everybody focuses on her. I know she's the main character, but there are at least 8 people fawning over her, and that was before she got "famous". But I loved the transformation she went through.
I could go on and on about how difficult it is for me to understand the world where Retra came from and the one she went to. They are both so different from our worlds and it's scary.
I'm going to give up on this nonsense so-called review, with just one last thing: Lenoir, what is your deal?...more

If I look in the past, it seems like nothing has really changed, besides the fact that I grew up. But when I look more closely, I see technology evolved in ways I didn't think were possible. 15 years ago I would have laughed if somebody would have told me people would be online, constantly. Computers, laptops, phones,... The possibilities become more and more endless, the opportunities become bigger and bigger, the future is looking so bright it hurts my eyes. Things just only get better, right?
This books is set in a world where technology is used to control people's lives, not to enrich it. We already feel slightly threatened when people ask you for your email address in a random store, so imagine what it would be like if everything you did left a trace somewhere. From when you wake up, to stores where you buy your clothes to the conversations you have with people.
Face to face interaction is nearly extinct in Maddie's world. You can do everything while sitting in front of your computer screen: going to school, walks on the beach, workouts, anything. When we meet Maddie, she's perfectly okay with the way she's living her life. The only downside is the way her father treats her. A few years ago she went through a rebellious period and because of that, her father nearly went to prison. Ever since, his leach on her has been extremely short, keeping a close eye on her every digital movement. He is the inventor of the most influential program in history called Digital School, which makes if possible for people to study at home. The amount of power he has is almost endless.
Things suddenly change when Maddie meets Justin Solvi online, who convinces her to come to a real life tutor session. He puts her world upside down while trying to convince her people shouldn't be shut off from the real world, but live in it. Everything Maddie believes in gets questioned. I liked the interaction between Maddie and Justin, but his motives for not wanting to get close to Maddie are a bit on the hollow side. He has is own parents to show how it can work, if you put some effort into it. There is no way he can keep on doing this without having somebody to be close to. I hope he realizes this soon.
I really liked this book, it has a good flow and the buildup is well written. A lot of the characters are interesting and likable. This story makes you think about the direction we are headed in and wonder if it's the good one. I can't wait to find out what happens next. ...more
