Zora Neale Hurston
“..she began to stand around the gate and expect things. What things? She didn't know exactly. Her breath was gusty and short. She knew things that nobody ever told her. For instance, the words of the trees and the wind. .. She knew the world was a stallion rolling in the blue pasture of ether. She knew that God tore down the old world every evening and built a new one by sun-up. It was wonderful to see it take form with the sun and emerge from the gray dust of its making. ”
Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God

Toni Morrison
“Like any artist without an art form, she became dangerous.”
Toni Morrison, Sula

Toni Morrison
“Lonely, ain't it?
Yes, but my lonely is mine. Now your lonely is somebody else's. Made by somebody else and handed to you. Ain't that something? A secondhand lonely.”
Toni Morrison, Sula

Toni Morrison
“It is sheer good fortune to miss somebody long before they leave you.”
Toni Morrison, Sula

Christopher Paul Curtis
“There's one good thing about getting in trouble: It seems like you do it in steps. It seems like you don't just end up in trouble but that you kind of ease yourself into it. It also seems like the worse the trouble is that you get into, the more steps it takes to get there. Sort of like you're getting a bunch of little warnings on the way; sort of like if you really wanted to you could turn around.”
Christopher Paul Curtis, The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963
